Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the effect of leadership on organizational outcomes and summarizes the current research findings in the field. It addresses the need for inclusive and interpretive studies in the field in order to interpret leadership literature and suggest new pathways for further studies. Appropriately, a meta-analysis approach is used by the contributors to show the big picture to the researchers by analyzing and combining the findings from different independent studies. In particular, the editors compile various studies examining the relationship between the leadership and thirteen organizational outcomes separately. The philosophy behind this book is to direct future research and practices rather than addressing the limits of current studies.

Book excerpt: This research examined the relationship between perceived presidential leadership styles and faculty job satisfaction in Illinois Community Colleges. Based on previous research studies in leadership and job satisfaction, two widely accepted and validated survey questionnaires were selected as main instruments for the study. An additional four demographic questions were added in the areas of tenure status, gender, length of service at the institution and level of degree attained to stratify the sample results. The Leadership Behavior Description Questionnaire (LBDQ) was used to measure presidential leadership styles as perceived by the faculty. The Job Satisfaction Survey (JSS) was used to measure faculty job satisfaction. The LBDQ and MSQ questionnaires, and demographic questions were uploaded into Survey Monkey and the link was sent to participants. Data on presidential leadership style and faculty job satisfaction were collected from a sample of 62 full time faculty members from 5 Illinois Community Colleges. The rate of survey return was 15%. Statistical analyses, including ANOVAs, t-tests and Pearson Correlations were performed and descriptive statistics were ran to answer the study's research questions. ANOVAs were conducted to determine whether differences and/or interactions existed in faculty job satisfaction based on perceived presidential leadership style and the faculty demographic variables of length of service and level of degree attained. T-Tests were conducted on the remaining two demographic questions of gender and tenure status. Lastly, Pearson correlations were conducted to determine the relationship between the survey results. The following conclusions were drawn from the statistical analyses. Overall job satisfaction of faculty at Illinois community colleges who responded to the study can be considered "ambivalent". There was a statistically moderate association between the two survey results, overall. The results of the Pearson correlation coefficients proved there is a relationship between six of the eleven LBDQ subscales and overall JSS results. They are: Initiation of Structure, Integration, Role of Assumption, Tolerance of Freedom, Persuasion and Representation. None of the demographic responses statistically impacted job satisfaction or perceptions of presidential leadership styles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do the benefits of higher education compare with its costs, and how does this comparison vary across individuals and institutions? These questions are fundamental to quantifying the productivity of the education sector. The studies in Productivity in Higher Education use rich and novel administrative data, modern econometric methods, and careful institutional analysis to explore productivity issues. The authors examine the returns to undergraduate education, differences in costs by major, the productivity of for-profit schools, the productivity of various types of faculty and of outcomes, the effects of online education on the higher education market, and the ways in which the productivity of different institutions responds to market forces. The analyses recognize five key challenges to assessing productivity in higher education: the potential for multiple student outcomes in terms of skills, earnings, invention, and employment; the fact that colleges and universities are “multiproduct” firms that conduct varied activities across many domains; the fact that students select which school to attend based in part on their aptitude; the difficulty of attributing outcomes to individual institutions when students attend more than one; and the possibility that some of the benefits of higher education may arise from the system as a whole rather than from a single institution. The findings and the approaches illustrated can facilitate decision-making processes in higher education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is organized around 11 topics, including the skills and personal qualities needed to provide effective academic leadership; strengthening the infrastructure for academic affairs through strategic planning, facilities planning, and technology integration; the importance of developing new resources and linking them to academic priorities; academic entrepreneurship; assessing academic quality and improving programs and services; continuous improvement; the central importance of investing in the faculty; and improving academic decisions. The chief academic officer must be the voice for the campus's academic purposes and a source of energy in supporting the activities of others. Collaboration with colleagues across the institution is key to Ferren and Stanton's approach. Their experiences in administrative roles, ranging from department chair to provost, have provided them with the ability to conduct and utilize many studies, including budget adequacy modeling and salary equity studies. These are issues for which the authors have been responsible for implementation and decision-making, allowing them to understand that collaborative processes and partnerships-such as chairs with deans, deans with vice presidents, faculty with administrators, or the CAO with members of the president's cabinet—are as important as informed decision-making. Because CAOs are less likely to read what business officers and vice presidents for administration read, this book attempts to integrate differing institutional perspectives and explain processes and criteria. CAOs can tailor their decisions to institution circumstances and solve problems with greater insight.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: While there may not be a standard description of technical college presidents or expectations of performance, men and women who serve as presidents for the Technical College System of Georgia are realists in understanding institutional outcomes are the result of interdependent activities. The system operates with clear goals in mind to promote access to career and technical education, customized training, and workforce development opportunities to all of Georgias citizens by providing learning facilities within 30 minutes of any Georgia community. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between presidential leadership and organizational effectiveness in the Technical College System of Georgia. Therefore, through the lenses of the vice presidents, this research answers the following three questions: (a) to what extent do Georgias technical colleges vary in terms of their effectiveness as measured by graduation rates, retention rates, and job placement rates, (b) to what extent do the differences in Georgias technical colleges effectiveness relate to presidential leadership behavior as measured by Bolman and Deals (1991a) Leadership Orientation (Other) survey instrument, and (c) to what extent does the relationship between presidential leadership and organizational effectiveness gauged by the three accountability measures (graduation rate, retention rate, and job placement rate) depending on institutional (size) and individual (gender and length of service) background characteristics? Bolman and Deals (1991a) Leadership Orientations Inventory (Other) survey instrument was used to collect perception data. Data collected from 67 vice presidents representative of each technical college was analyzed using descriptive procedures to examine question one, Pearsons r to explore question two, and the one-way analysis of variance, t-tests and post hoc testing to examine data related to the independent variables of gender, tenure, college size and state-wide ranking in question three. Based on the perceptions of the vice presidents and in agreement with Bolman and Deals continued leadership research, the findings from this study indicated effective technical college presidents were more likely to use multiple-frame leadership approaches and were perceived to be both effective managers and leaders. Further investigation needs to be done on leadership behaviors of technical college presidents in Georgia.

Book excerpt: As American community colleges enter the 21st century, there is a convergence of concerns regarding the next generation of community college leaders. Both community college presidents and their Chief Academic Officers (CAO) are retiring at rapid rate; it is predicted that 80% of all presidents and lead administrators will retire by 2011. Historically, CAOs have been the most likely source to fill presidential vacancies - aside from existing presidents themselves. However, research suggests that future community college leaders will require a skillset different from their predecessors. This suggests the possibility that either the next generation of leaders needs to come via non-traditional routes or additional training will be needed for current academics aspiring to ascend into upper administration. The purpose of this study is to ascertain the identity of today's Chief Academic Officers in terms of their gender and race/ethnicity.^Also additional information has been gathered regarding their educational background and the educational and occupational backgrounds of their parents. Female and minority CAOs have been asked to share their experiences unique to them because of their gender and race/ethnicity. Finally, CAOs who have been identified by their peers as exemplars in their field were asked to rate the importance of specific attitudes, skills, and abilities to not only Chief Academic Officers, but also what they perceive as important traits in their subordinates. A two-staged online surveying process resulted in feedback from 336 Chief Academic Officers. The surveys were largely based on a similar research effort in the mid-1980s. By adopting a similar method, it was possible to conduct several comparative analyses. Several important finding emerged from this study. Today's Chief Academic Officers are more diverse (in terms of gender and race/ethnicity) than they were 20 years ago.^A majority of female and minority CAOs participated in some sort of leadership training or professional development that helped them execute their duties as Chief Academic Officer. However, this same group of administrators still experience obstacles in terms of interviewing, getting hired, and gaining acceptance from their colleagues. Finally, the skills, attitudes, and abilities that are perceived as important to Chief Academic Officers and their subordinates are relatively similar to how they were in the past. The implications of this study are discussed with the intent of educating Boards of Trustees, hiring committees, policy makers, and all interesting in the community college movement.
