Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Equality between husbands and wives is recognized - in theory - as being beneficial to the well-being of a family. However, empirical research over the past two decades indicates that the advantage is `his' rather than `hers': the vast majority of married women still bears a disproportionate responsibility for work related to relationships, home and children. This book examines why, while women's roles have expanded at an astonishing rate, the critical need for a more egalitarian style of relating has not been met. The author maintains that motivation to seek change stems from people perceiving inequality as unfair, and that this perception can be impeded by gender differences in sense of entitlement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative study focuses on high-achieving women and their families. Both partners were interviewed in an attempt to define the challenges these families face and the secrets of their successes. The authors' analysis of the successes and failures of these relationships is extended into a general examination of the disjuncture between social change and changes in individuals' attitudes and behaviour. The result is an important contribution to the understanding of the effects of shifting gender roles on the modern marriage, on contemporary families and on society as a whole.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over time, male homosexuality and effeminacy have become indelibly associated, sometimes even synonymous. In Faeries, Bears, and Leathermen, Peter Hennen contends that this stigma of effeminacy exerts a powerful influence on gay subcultures. Through a comparative ethnographic analysis of three communities, Hennen explores the surprising ways that conventional masculinity is being collectively challenged, subverted, or perpetuated in contemporary gay male culture. Hennen’s colorful study focuses on a trio of groups: the Radical Faeries, who parody effeminacy by playfully embracing it, donning prom dresses and glitter; the Bears, who strive to appear like “regular guys” and celebrate their larger, hairier bodies; and the Leathermen, who emulate hypermasculine biker culture, simultaneously paying homage to and undermining notions of manliness. Along with a historical analysis of the association between effeminacy and homosexuality, Hennen examines how this connection affects the groups’ sexual practices. Ultimately, he argues, while all three groups adopt innovative approaches to gender issues and sexual pleasure, masculine norms continue to constrain members of each community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dual-career marriage, in which wife and husband each pursue a professional career, offers a window into the changing landscape of gender roles and relations. In the span of a single generation, the family in which both parents work outside the home has gone from being the exception to being the rule. This book examines the multi-layered implications this impressive, rapid change holds for the fabric of family and marital life and for the course of men's and women's work lives. Intensive interviews with dual-career wives and husbands provide rich information about four major issues: * In what ways and for whom do dual-career marriages replicate the traditional gender arrangements of one-career marriages, and in what ways do dual-career marriages represent a revolution in gender roles? * How do the two careers of spouses develop side by side, and in what ways do dual-career spouses help or hinder each other's careers? * How do work and family combine in dual-career marriages? * How are relationships between spouses and between parents and children affected by dual careers? This book presents a subtle, textured portrait of contemporary dual-career marriage -- examining the complicated interplay of expectations, behaviors, and emotions within and between dual-career spouses. The author observes that the centrality of family or work to each spouse's sense of self powerfully affects how the couple negotiates the challenges posed by dual-career marriage, including feelings of competition between spouses, questions of geographic moves, and division of domestic tasks. The study illuminates many issues of clinical relevance, such as the common hazard of dual-career spouses having little time for marital intimacy once the rigorous demands of careers and children are met, and the complicated intrapersonal as well as interpersonal tensions generated by gender roles in transition.

This book was released on 1983 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dual earner couples (136) and housewives couples (103) were studied. The focus was on the relationship between martial satisfaction and satisfaction with housework and childcare arrangements, doing own share of housework and childcare. Analysis was done at both individual and couple levels. At both levels of analysis, satisfaction with housework and childcare arrangements and perceiving spouse as doing his/her share of housework and childcare predict marital satisfaction. None of the traditional variables: income, family stage, wife's employment status and sex predict marital satisfaction. Perceptions of own contribution to housework and childcare are not correlated to marital satisfaction among men, but, women who are satisfied with thier marriage perceive themselves as doing less than their share of family work. In all three couples' patterns (one in dual earners and two in housewives couples) the perception which distinguishes between spouses who are satisfied with marriage and those who are not is that the other spouse is doing his/her share of family work. Book excerpt: This study examined predictors of relationship satisfaction among a sexually diverse sample of women in dual-earner relationships. Much of the literature has focused on dual earner relationships among White, heterosexual, married men and women (e.g., Barnett & Hyde, 2001; Gilbert, 1993), and only recently have researchers begun to examine relationship satisfaction among gay men and lesbian women (e.g., Eldridge & Gilbert, 1990; Kurdek & Schmitt, 1986), but often continue to neglect bisexual men and women. Furthermore, there has been a greater negative emphasis on understanding work-family conflict as opposed to understanding and facilitating greater work-life balance (Perrone & Worthington, 2001). Therefore, this study made a unique contribution to research by examining positive predictors of relationship satisfaction among lesbian, bisexual and heterosexual women with male or female partners. Numerous variables have been examined in previous research on relationship satisfaction and dual-earner couples. Based on a review of relevant literature, coping behaviors, perceived equity, perceived social support, and combined income were included. Additionally, few studies have considered the effects of gender identity, as opposed to gender roles (which does not translate well into same-sex relationships), or sexual identity development. Thus, two newly developed measures, the Hoffman Gender Scale (Hoffman, Borders, & Hattie, 2000) and the Measure of Sexual Identity Exploration and Commitment (Worthington, Savoy, & Navarro, 2003) allowed for inclusion of these variables. It was hypothesized that all six predictor variables would predict relationship satisfaction for women in both samples. Two samples of women were examined using hierarchical regression analyses: (1) lesbian and bisexual women with female partners, and (2) heterosexual and bisexual women with male partners. Perceived equity and social support from others were significant for women with female partners. For women with male partners, perceived equity, social support from friends, two types of coping behaviors, and gender identity self-acceptance were significant. Although women in the two samples are confronted by many similar issues in the context of dual-earner relationships, it is apparent that the dominant paradigm used to explain relationship satisfaction may be less valid for women with female partners. Limitations to generalizability of these results and implications for future research, training, and clinical practice are discussed.
