The survey also contained open responses asking for families' motivations to volunteer and improvements that could be made when involved at school. Results suggest that although there are high levels of reported confidence and perceptions of community collaborative practices, uneven power dynamics within the community was also evident (Ishimaru, 2019). Further examination of parent involvement strategies and practices at the district charter school should take place to ensure family-centered and equitable collaboration is happening (Knopf & Swick, 2008; Ishimaru, 2019; Wang, 2011;).

Book excerpt: Birth parenting time between children in foster care and their biological parents are often thought of as a standard path toward achieving reunification (Browne & Moloney, 2002; Haight et al., 2003). The overall goal of parenting time is to create space for both the parent and child to have positive parent-child interactions and either work towards or maintain a healthy parent-child relationship. However, birth parenting times can be stressful for the parent, child, foster parent, and the foster care caseworker. To facilitate optimal parenting times, evidenced-based practices recommended foster care workers utilize a relationship-based approach when supervising parenting time. However, there is limited research on what relationship-based strategies are used or effective during the birth parenting times. Therefore, this mixed-method study aims to explore the perceptions of foster care caseworkers on birth parents with children in foster care, the relationships between birth parents and caseworkers, and the supports that caseworkers have when working with birth parents. A total of five foster care caseworkers at a Midwest foster care agency participated in this study and completed both an interview and a survey. Results from interviews highlighted the acknowledgement of the barriers birth parents face along with their strengths. Results emphasized the importance of caseworkers developing relationships with birth parents and tailoring services to meet their needs. Additionally, caseworkers reported being open and honest when communicating, which helps the birth parents feel supported and more comfortable. A majority of caseworkers reported finding their caseload somewhat manageable, and all caseworkers reported feeling confident in facilitating birth parenting times. Finally, a variety of inner agency supports were identified by caseworkers that helped support their work with birth parents. Further research along with practice implications will also be discussed.

The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. Book excerpt: The number of children in foster care continues to rise with 442,995 in foster care according to the Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System (AFCARS) Report, (2018). Although many scholarly articles on the foster care system have been published in recent years, limited studies existing on efforts to recruit with kinship or non-related foster parents. With the number of foster children placed in non-related foster homes outnumbering those in kinship homes, the present study is designed to increase understanding of how knowledge of the foster care system, perceptions of the foster care system and foster parents, and personality traits of agreeableness, openness, and conscientiousness impacts prospective foster parents willingness to foster a non-related or kinship child. One finding from the study was that only the personality trait of Conscientiousness predicted willingness to foster a non-related child with R = .195, R2 =.038, F(1,78) =.3.068, p = .084. Another outcome of the study showed that Perceptions of the Foster Care system and the personality trait of Conscientiousness predicted willingness to foster a kinship child at R = .195, R2=.038, F(1,78) =.3.068, p = .084, and R = .187, change in R2= .035, F(1,78) = 2.834, p = .096 respectively. This is one of the first exploratory studies to contribute to the identification of personality traits or knowledge or perceptions of the foster care system with the potential to predict willingness to foster either non-related of kinship children. Future research in this area should continue in attempts to close the gaps between the number of children entering into foster care and the number of foster homes available for them.

Book excerpt: A long debate in education has been the involvement of parents and whether their engagement improves student achievement. This qualitative research study sought to investigate the perceptions of teachers and administrators on the factors that affect parental engagement in school-sponsored workshops and examined effective strategies to foster parental engagement in those workshops. Sixteen teachers and seven administrators of a school district in southeastern Pennsylvanian volunteered for the study because of their influence on relationships with families and how those relationships encourage parental engagement in schools. Qualitative data on parental engagement in school-sponsored workshops emerged through an analysis of survey results and interviews with teachers and administrators. The findings of the research study suggested multiple components of a successful parental engagement model for school districts. Participants recognized that parent engagement in a child's education is essential but the barriers that impede parental engagement must be addressed to promote engagement in school-sponsored parent workshops. Schools need to individually invite families to workshops and the buildings should have a welcoming, friendly environment with the basic necessities of meals, childcare, transportation, and interpreters provided to the families. Furthermore, schools should utilize community resources to promote parental engagement. Finally, parent workshops need to include activities that actively engage parents with their child to enhance parental engagement in workshops. Literature implies these key components of a parental engagement model will improve the performance of students whose parents are engaged in their education, which ultimately, will impact their overall academic achievement.
