Book excerpt: This study examined teachers' and administrators' perceptions of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) on instructional delivery and student achievement in an urban school setting. The study focused on the state of poverty and the impact this environmental condition had on student achievement. Twelve teachers and eight administrators of an urban school district implementing components of NCLB participated in the study. Surveys, interviews, and the Stages of Concern Questionnaire instruments were utilized to collect data for the study. The NCLB legislation mandated that all students achieve proficiency in reading and mathematics by the year 2014. Educators were challenged to accomplish this goal. External conditions were identified that impeded student achievement. Educators indicated that urban districts were challenged to compete with suburban districts' test scores and to meet the academic and emotional needs of their students. To achieve this task, educators utilized innovative teaching strategies to decrease the achievement gap that exists between urban and suburban school students.

Book excerpt: During the period of school accountability, standardized testing has been utilized to gauge the effectiveness of schools as required under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB). This case study explored teachers' perceptions regarding the implementation of NCLB on curriculum, instruction, and assessment. One hundred twenty-two teachers from a high performing suburban school district took part in the study. All participants took The National Board on Educational Testing and Public Policy (NBETPP) online site survey. The survey was consistent with the requirements of the National IRB. Data compiled from The NBETPP were analyzed to gain insight on teachers' perceptions about state-mandated testing and its impact on classroom curriculum, instruction, assessment. The online survey contained a follow-up open-ended question which provided participants with the opportunity to enhance survey responses. In addition, historical data on initiatives implemented by the district were also analyzed by the researcher.

Counselors and administrators believe their primary focus must be directed toward tested subjects with much of their efforts now becoming compliance driven. These findings suggest the arts are in danger of being removed from the educational public school system, an unfortunate consequence for the development of future artists. Therefore, it is recommended ways be found to focus on the importance of the arts and provide students more opportunities to enroll in visual and performing arts courses and experiences so that they have the opportunity to become well-rounded and fully educated citizens.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to describe the perceived impact of No Child Left Behind on elementary science classrooms in 3 Northeast Tennessee school districts. Quantitative descriptive methodology was used to document how No Child Left Behind impacts instructional methodology, professional development, administrative support, materials and resources, and assessment in 3rd through 5th grades. Data were collected using a survey developed by the researcher. The survey consisted of a demographic section, 28 statements, and 2 open-ended questions. The 51 participants included elementary-school science teachers in 8 schools in 3 upper East Tennessee school districts. Data analysis was based on the following demographics: differing levels of teaching experience, No Child Left Behind school status, and small and large schools. Findings included: The 3 greatest concerns of the impact of the No Child Left Behind Act were the pressures felt by teachers to increase test scores, the manner in which it impacted at-risk or disadvantaged students, and the lack of inservice, specifically for science. Findings also revealed that low- scoring schools or grades were receiving extra assistance and teachers reported they feel that their school or district fosters and supports change. An analysis of the open-ended questions emphasized the stress teachers reported feeling along with the loss of science instruction time to math and language arts.

Book excerpt: This thesis analyzes teachers’ perceptions of the impact NCLB has on classrooms every day. It begins with a brief literature review analyzing and synthesizing editorial articles that discuss perceptions of the successes and shortcomings of NCLB. It then describes and discusses a survey study conducted amongst teachers in Southern Virginia. Thirty teachers from three counties were surveyed, and, as expected, when given space to respond freely, they responded with negative comments toward NCLB. However, when asked to rank the impact of the No Child Left Behind Act on student success and teacher effectiveness the surveyed teachers expressed a neutral impact. These mixed results indicate a need for further studies.
