The survey created was modeled on the Job Satisfaction Scale (Warr, Cook, & Wall, 1979), the NASP 5-year survey (Curtis, Castillo, & Gelley, 2012), and Graves, Proctor and Aston's (2014) survey of urban practitioners. Results indicated that practice setting has a significant relationship with aspects of job satisfaction, challenges, and roles performed. Implications of these results are discussed and suggestions for future research are outlined.

Book excerpt: The practice of a rural school psychologist is challenging and can be fraught with aspects of isolation, role confusion, and burn out (Hargrove, 1986). In many rural communities, the only qualified mental health professional may be a school psychologist. Thus, rural school psychologists require particular and generalist skill sets to meet the diverse needs of their community. This reality is in contrast to dominant discourses within the broader field of psychology, which promote limited scopes of practice within defined areas of clinical competency. A collective case study of rural school psychologists from across Saskatchewan using a Communities of Practice (Wenger, 1998) conceptual framework was undertaken to determine: (1) the domain of rural school psychology (i.e., the specialty competencies of rural school psychologists); (2) the community of rural school psychologists (i.e., how skill and knowledge is shared); and (3) the practice of rural school psychology (i.e., challenges and opportunities in practice). The study introduces Thematic Delphi Analysis as a novel methodology in community-based research. Eight (8) rural psychologists from Saskatchewan participated in semi-structured interviews and subsequently participated in the analysis through three rounds of Delphi review. The results of this preliminary study have identified the Knowledge, Skills, Attitudes, and Behaviours (KSABs) required of rural school psychologists, the ways in which rural psychologists engage in multiple communities to maintain their competency, and their ability to use creative practice when faced with limits of their competency so that they can support students, schools, families, and communities. This study acknowledges the unique role that rural school psychologists play within the field of psychology, with the challenge of working at the limits of their competency within a space of knowledgeability. Within this space, rural school psychologists engage with creative practice procedurally and ethically, allowing for the development of innovative practices. These innovations may inform the broader field of psychology. Implications for this study promote the practice of rural school psychology and include rural psychologist perspectives in present discussions of competency.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discrepancies between recommended and actual practices of school psychologists have plagued the field for decades. Previous studies have examined and identified differences in school psychology practices based upon geographical location within the United States as well as between community settings (e.g., rural, urban). The present study sought to fill a gap in the literature (Hosp & Reschly, 2002) by examining the actual and perceived needed practices of school psychologists in the East South Central (ESC) census division of the United States and compare those practices to the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) Practice Model (NASP, 2020c). Sixty-five school psychologists from the ESC division completed an adapted and reproduced version of the NASP Membership Survey (Walcott & Hyson, 2018) measuring a number of demographic variables as well as their engagement in a variety of school psychologist activities and services using a 7-point Likert-scale. Participants rated their actual practice during the most recently completed school year and rated the level of engagement in those same practices they thought was needed to best serve students in their district during a typical school year. Results indicated that as a whole, school psychologists in the ESC division do not engage in a comprehensive service delivery model as recommended by NASP. Rather, their perceived need for services was more closely aligned to the NASP Practice Model (NASP, 2020c). State-level comparisons indicated that school psychologists in Alabama practice under a traditional gatekeeper of special education model (Merrell et al., 2006) compared to their counterparts in Kentucky and Tennessee. School psychologists in Kentucky reported more engagement in mental-health related services than participants from other states. Community-level comparisons indicated that school psychologists practicing in urban settings are more engaged in a comprehensive service delivery model than those practicing in rural or suburban areas. No specific practices were identified as more needed than others by school psychologists in rural settings. Implications for future research include analysis of organizational factors contributing to discrepancies with implications for practice related to advocacy efforts.
