Book excerpt: A recent report that examined university students across 23 countries found that 4 out of 10 students were physically inactive (Pengpid et al., 2015). Physical inactivity has been linked to certain types of preventable diseases (Myers et al., 2004). This study is an examination of the perceived factors influencing leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) among African students attending the University of Regina (U of R) to understand their experiences with and perceptions of LTPA. The study further explored how LTPA contributes to students' wellness. This research was guided by an interpretive inquiry approach because it examines in-depth the meanings and understanding people create of their personal experiences and perceptions (Gephart & Rynes, 2004). Seven students were recruited for the study and semi-structured interviews were conducted during data collection. The transcripts were analyzed by way of inductive analysis, the most common approach for qualitative studies (Thomas, 2006). The results of the study provided insights into African students' perceived benefits of LTPA and constraints to participation. This thesis sets out suggestions for improving or maintaining LTPA participation among the students. Finally, it contributes to the body of knowledge on the perceived constraints to physical activity and LTPA participation among international students and provides suggestions for further research. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine college students' perceived benefits, barriers, cues to action, and extent of involvement in vigorous physical activity. Analyses were also conducted to examine whether benefits, barriers, cues, and vigorous physical activity involvement differed significantly based on: sex, grade level, parental exercise patterns, parental encouragement, peer exercise patterns, and peer encouragement. A convenience sample of 480 participants were surveyed during the 2009 spring and fall quarters. The sample included students from a variety of general education courses. Valid and reliable subscales were developed for the 21 item questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, one-way analyses of variance, and Pearson correlations were used to analyze the data. Results indicated that overall, participants' involvement in vigorous physical activity was low. It was found that parent and peer engagement in and encouragement of vigorous physical activity significantly affected the number of perceived benefits, barriers, cues and involvement in vigorous physical activity. Results also showed significant correlations between the number of perceived benefits, barriers, and cues to vigorous physical activity and the extent of involvement in vigorous physical activity. Recommendations have been included for future studies.

Although a smaller percentage of young adults experience obesity compared to any other adult age grouping, young adults who are not set up to prevent the onset of overweight and obesity are at risk of a lifelong health struggle. Fortunately, engagement in regular physical activity has been associated with the prevention of obesity. The 2008 physical activity guidelines recommend adults attain at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous physical activity (or a combination of the two) every week; however, rising obesity rates suggest engaging in physical activity is becoming harder to do. College and university students are not exempt from the difficulties of incorporating physical activity into their routines. This study used mixed methods to conduct a comprehensive examination of perceived ecological barriers to physical activity undergraduate students experience. Results from a Midwestern university indicated most undergraduates meet the physical activity guidelines; however, students still indicated several ecological barriers to physical activity. Quantitative results indicated the top barriers, despite whether students met physical activity guidelines, are (1) 'the amount of coursework I have' and (2) 'how much time being physically active takes away from my responsibilities (e.g., schoolwork, employment, familial commitments, etc.).' Although these constructs presented themselves in the interviews, qualitative results indicated the top barriers are (1) Issues with the built environment, (2) Formality of physical activity, and (3) Socio-cultural influence. Stakeholders who are interested in the prevention of overweight and obesity during and after college can use these findings to develop interventions and to encourage universities to 'buy in' to the design of healthier campuses for their students. Future research should move toward more action-oriented research; specifically, evaluation of said interventions.

Book excerpt: Background/Purpose: The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively affected the mental health and wellbeing of college students, as well as behaviors such as physical activity. Exercise is Medicine On Campus (EIM-OC) calls upon universities and colleges to promote physical activity as a vital sign of health. The aim of this study was to evaluate the reach and effectiveness of the virtual EIM-OC campaign and its effects on college students' physical activity behaviors and selected social cognitive theory (SCT) variables. As a secondary aim, we also assessed physical activity behavior and barriers among college students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We conducted an online baseline survey at the end of September 2020 and a follow up survey at the beginning of November 2020. A total of 469 K-State students (n = 362 females; n = 82 kinesiology majors) completed the baseline survey, and 337 of these participants completed the follow-up survey. Throughout October (EIM-OC month), K-State conducted a variety of virtual events to promote physical activity on campus, including Lunch and Learn presentations by Kinesiology faculty, weekly physical activity challenges, a monthlong Bingo challenge, daily social media posts, and a Distinguished Lecture Series presentation. Changes in physical activity and SCT variables (self-efficacy, self-regulation, outcome expectations, and perceived community support) from baseline to follow-up were assessed using parametric and non-parametric tests. Results: Of the 337 individuals who completed the follow up survey, 97 (28.8%) said they had heard of EIM-OC month at K-State.
