Book excerpt: This three-paper dissertation addresses gaps in the literature focused on distracted driving and the impact of regulations aimed at reducing its prevalence. With the widespread proliferation of mobile phone usage and more sophisticated in-vehicle entertainment and information systems, it is now commonplace for drivers to engage in non-driving activities (also referred to as "secondary tasks") while driving. It is widely believed that distracted driving is positively related to motor vehicle crashes and other undesirable driving outcomes. This dissertation specifically focuses on three topics: (1) the nature of the distracted driving literature given the numerous secondary tasks, driving performance outcomes, and study settings examined and used by researchers, (2) the impact of texting messaging regulations on motor vehicle crash-related fatalities, and (3) the impact of text messaging regulations on motor vehicle crash-related hospitalizations. The first study in this dissertation is a systematic review of studies that examined the relationship between selected distracted driving activities and various driving performance outcomes. It quantifies the proportion of existing studies that have focused on specific distracting activities (mobile phone use, cigarette smoking, listening to music, etc.) and specific driving performance outcomes, (e.g. crashes, injuries, fatalities, following distance). The first paper also identifies the types of studies that are more likely to find detrimental relationships between secondary tasks and driving performance outcomes. The second paper in this dissertation examines whether states that have prohibited text messaging while driving have seen decreases in motor vehicle crash-related fatality counts. Because text messaging restrictions are nuanced across states, this paper will additionally determine whether more stringent and comprehensive restrictions result in the greatest decreases in fatality counts. The third paper of this dissertation will determine whether states with primarily enforced text messaging restrictions have seen decreases in motor vehicle crash-related hospitalization counts.

Book excerpt: Previous research, using driving simulation, crash data, and naturalistic methods, has begun to shed light on the dangers of texting while driving. Perhaps because of the dangers, no published work has experimentally investigated the dangers of texting while driving using an actual vehicle. Additionally, previous research does not clearly differentiate the dangers associated with reading and writing text messages. To address these issues, 42 participants drove an instrumented research vehicle on a closed driving course. Participants drove under a control, text reading, and text writing condition. Baseline text reading and writing data were also collected outside of the research vehicle. Results indicated that impairment associated with texting while driving may be greater than previously thought. Principally, when reading or writing texts, drivers exhibited reductions in reaction time that were nearly twice as great as previously thought. Drivers also exhibited nearly identical impairment in the reading and writing conditions, suggesting that both reading and writing text messages may be equally dangerous. These results have immediate implications for improving our understanding of the dangers of texting while driving and may be useful for future public policy discussions.

Book excerpt: Despite the advances that have been made to enhance vehicular safety, motor vehicle accidents remain one of the greatest public safety concerns in the country. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2010 there were 32,885 people killed in an estimated 5,419,000 police-reported motor vehicle traffic crashes (NHTSA, 2010). Some of these accidents could be prevented if people adopt safer driving habits. Texting behind the wheel is especially an issue among teenagers since text messaging has become the preferred method of communications among teenagers. There is some research that suggests drivers can be influenced by the behavior of their parents or friends. But most of this research has been focused on cell phone use when driving. There is limited research in regards to texting behind the wheel. An anonymous online survey was utilized to collect data from 18-24 year olds, regarding their texting and driving behavior and their parents' and friends' behavior. This survey was distributed through the Steven's Driving Facebook page. 441 responses were collected. The results showed that 81. 3 % of young drivers reported texting and driving, which agrees with previous literature. Furthermore, no differences were found in the texting and driving behavior of young drivers of different genders and ages. Drivers, between the age of 18 and 24, that currently text and drive are 2. 24 times more likely to have observed their parents texting and driving prior to having their license. Also, young drivers that engage in texting while driving are, 3. 8 times more likely to have seen their friends also text and drive. Specifically, young drivers in all three age groups, 18-19, 20-21 and 22-24 are 3. 02, 4. 11 and 4. 0 times more likely to have friends that currently text then those that do not. The influence of peers on texting and driving continue to be a problem. More studies need to be performed on the influence parents have on their children's texting and driving behaviors. Public awareness campaigns need to be developed that focus on telling parents not to text and drive especially when in the presence of their children.

The study was a non-experimental comparative cross-sectional study. The information will be shared with healthcare practitioners to allow them to provide individualized health promotion education. Results of the research revealed that there is a statistically significant difference in the motivations for text messaging and driving between the Boomer II and Z generation.

Book excerpt: Hazard perception is a multi-faceted process that requires drivers to maintain an ongoing awareness of a complex driving environment. The majority of research studies, however, utilize behavioral responses to a limited number of discrete hazardous events (e.g., response to a braking lead vehicle, vehicle lane deviations, or pedestrians) to assess a driver's hazard perception ability. The current study uses a modification of SDT to expand these events, called fuzzy signal detection (fSDT) to account for the fuzzy nature of real-world driving hazards. Unlike traditional SDT, which requires a classification of any given scenario, as either containing a hazard or no hazard, fSDT allows for each scenario to be classified by it's potential to develop into a situation where a driver response is necessary to avoid a collision or near collision. The purpose of this study was to explore how performing a texting task impacts a driver's hazard perception ability while viewing real-world driving scenes using SDT metrics. The results showed that texting while driving increased perceived mental workload, reduced a driver's ability to discriminate hazards, and reduced a driver's likelihood to respond to a hazard, compared to driving only. What was found highlights the variability of the hazard perception process, suggesting that both sensitivity and response bias shifts occur when distracted. Additionally, the results indicate that these shifts are at least in part, moderated by the cognitive load the secondary task commands and by the current driving environment. These results also highlight the complexity in which distraction can impact both the allocation of cognitive resources as well as attentional selection.

In addition, many studies have found that cell phone while driving increases crash risk by 2.8 - 5 times (Klauer et al. 2006; Redelmeier and Tibshirani 1997; Violanti 1998; Violanti and Marshall 1996). With the inevitable prevalence of using portable devices during driving, it is probable that smartwatch usage behind the wheel may rise above smartphone usage. Unfortunately, previous literature seems to confirm the danger of smartwatch over smartphone usage while driving (Giang et al., 2014, 2015). However, these literatures unfairly assigned different notification settings (ringtone versus vibration) to each mobile device. This study compares simulator driving performance between smartphone and smartwatch at varying drive loads. Participants read text messages delivered either on a smartphone or smartwatch with notifications set to auditory only, vibration only or both (multimodal). Driving and texting performance was analyzed for each condition (phone vs. watch and auditory vs. tactile vs. multimodal and high vs. low drive load) to determine which device is more detrimental to driving performance. Interactions were observed between device and notification type for time to engage. Messages were answered faster on the watch with tactile and multimodal settings. Interactions between notification type and driving workload were detected for gain and coherence. More variability of gain was observed for the watch compared to the phone. In addition, tactile notifications had different levels of gain between drive load conditions compared to any other notification type. Both gain and coherence had higher levels in the high drive load compared to the load drive load conditions, indicating a possible underestimation of the driving environment.

Although forty-eight of 50 U.S. states allow the use of personal devices if operated hands-free and secured in the vehicle, scientific studies have yet to quantify the safety improvement presumed to be introduced by voice-to-text interactions. Thus, this study investigated how different modes of interaction of drivers with a smart phone (i.e., manual texting vs. vocal input) affect drivers’ distraction and performance in both conventional and semi-autonomous vehicles. The study was executed in a full-car integrated simulator and tested a population of 32 drivers. The study considered two scenarios: (1) conventional manual driving in a suburban environment with intersection stops; and (2) control takeover from an engaged autonomous vehicle that reverted to manual driving at a highway exit. The quality of execution of maneuvers as well as timing and tracking of eye-gaze focus areas were assessed in both scenarios. Results demonstrated that while participants perceived an increased level of safety while using the hands-free interface, response times and drift did not significantly differ from those manually texting. Furthermore, even though participants perceived a greater effort in accomplishing the text reply through the manual interface, none of the measured quantities for driving performance or eye-gaze focus revealed statistical difference between the two interfaces, ultimately calling into question the assumption of greater safety implicit in the laws allowing hands-free devices.
