Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What right did I possess, as a child of survivors, to recreate an account of the Holocaust as if I was there? In writing The Fiftieth Gate, Mark Baker describes a journey from despair and death towards hope and life; it is the story of a son who enters his parents’ memories and, inside the darkness, finds light. In his evocative prose, Baker takes us to this place of horror, and then brings us back to reflect on these events and remember: ‘Never again’. Across the silence of fifty years, Baker and his family travel from Poland and Germany to Jerusalem and Melbourne, as the author struggles to uncover the mystery of his parents’ survival: his father Yossl was imprisoned in concentration camps and his mother Genia was forced into hiding after the Jews of her village were murdered. Twenty years on from its first publication, The Fiftieth Gate remains an extraordinary book. It has become a classic and has now sold over 70,000 copies. In Baker's new introduction, he recalls his motivations for writing this important memoir, and highlights how the testimonial culture in Holocaust studies has spread to awareness of other genocides and our responsibility (and failure) to prevent them. As well as The Fiftieth Gate, A Journey Through Memory, a seminal book on his parents’ experience during the Holocaust, Mark Raphael Baker has written a compelling memoir, Thirty Days, A Journey to the End of Love, about the recent death of his wife. He is Director of the Australian Centre for Jewish Civilisation and Associate Professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies in the School at Monash University, Melbourne. ‘Heartrending and beautiful...This simply written, subtly complex narrative is instantly recognisable as a masterpiece, and the reader is rewarded by the light it sheds.’ Age ‘Combining precise historical research and poetic eloquence, Mark Baker’s The Fiftieth Gate remains the gold standard of second generation Holocaust memoirs on the occasion of its twentieth anniversary edition.’ Christopher R. Browning ‘Baker does with memory, what Rembrandt does with light. He uses it to model, to imagine, to illuminate, to astonish.’ Philip Adams

In this story, the nostalgia of the good old days is almost supernatural, as each day brings excitement to a little world that centers around Mr. P's famous front porch and the garage where he works. While with them, Jose Papino would share stories about his life as a real cowboy in Spain! There, Kyle and his friends would learn all about life, earning money, and being an entrepreneur while contributing to the community and the church and making their neighborhood something right out of the dreams of yesteryear! Each day brings excitement, adventure, life lessons, and, of course, Mr. Papino's puppy dog named Pepe, or Peppy, is along for the ride! This book is for all ages, and in twenty-seven chapters, it chronicles the last year of Kyle's youth, as he goes from being a twelve-year-old to a real teenager! In parallel, Peppy the puppy goes from being a puppy to an adult dog! Be prepared to be enveloped in this front porch world of wonder, fun, nostalgic magic, and page-turning excitement!

Book excerpt: In this his first novel, Frank Lagonigro describes the events and history of his family from his date of birth in 1928 through the Great Depression, the terrible wars, the brief interval of peace under President Dwight D. Eisenhower and the years that followed until the present time. Living in Brooklyn, New York, during the Great Depression was a distressing and an unforgettable experience for our parents. Most children didn't realize the gravity of the era until they read about it in their history books. It was an age before many of the modern amenities such as indoor bathrooms, heating systems, air-conditioning, television, elevators, computers, and other modern-day conveniences. In New York City, the Big Apple, the chief modes of transportation were trolley cars, buses, subway trains, and elevated trains. For a five-cent fare and a two-cent pass, a person could travel through the entire city, from borough to borough using one or several means of travel. The fare on the Staten Island Ferry was a nickel. Mailing a first-class letter required a three-cent stamp, and homes received mail deliveries each morning and afternoon. Bleacher seats at the three baseball stadiums sold for fifty-five cents, and the stars gave freely of their autographs. Long before supermarkets, credit cards, and online transactions, various ethnic groups were employed in specific jobs or as proprietors of specific businesses. Irish people were policemen or firemen. Many German and Italian people labored as sanitation personnel. Jewish people owned candy stores, groceries, and delicatessens. Italians provided haircuts, magazines, bay rum, and gossip in barbershops. And the Chinese were mavens of the hand laundries. Neighborhood saloons were in abundance and managed by the Germans and the Irish. Because the tenement apartments were small and uninsulated, they were hot in the summer and cold during the winter. Boys lived their lives on the streets, playing the simple and inexpensive games such as stickball and touch football. Men worked whenever possible; and their wives cooked, washed, mended clothes, and raised the family. Girls helped their mothers and, when free, played jacks and potsie. The general population were patriotic and God-fearing people. It was the worst and the best of times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Bernie Siegel has long observed how relationships with animals have helped his patients, alleviating their suffering and heartbreak. Now, he’s gathered many inspiring true stories, including delightful tales from the “Siegel Family Zoo” where “squawks, purrs, chirrups, squeaks, barks, and so on” fill the house. Other stories reveal animals as teachers and messengers, doctors and nurses, healers and miracle workers, and often as guileless clowns. Bernie writes that animals are here to show us how to be nonjudgmental and live better, healthier lives. Let these stories teach you, and apply their lessons to your daily life. If you have an animal, an appreciation for the inspirational, or simply the need for a smile, you’ll treasure this celebration of animals as a source of love, wisdom, and miracles.
