Book excerpt: This is the eighteenth annual edition of Debrett's People of Today which sets the scene for the people who are shaping Britain's future. Debrett's People of Today 2005 contains essential information on the 25,000 leading figures in British society. Unlike similar works of reference, Debrett's People of Today does not guarantee entry for life, with each edition being carefully researched, updated and revised. A significant number of the entrants are deselected each year to allow inclusion of many new achievers for the first time. Debrett's People of Today provides the widest possible coverage of any biographical reference book in the UK. Leading figures are included from a range of diverse sectors including business, politics, academia, the arts, media, sports and science. Uniquely, Debrett's People of Today lists the correct way to write to each entrant and provides an invaluable synopsis of Debrett's advice on correct forms of address, titles and decorations. It is this extensive coverage, supplementing the biographical details, that makes Debrett's People of Today the foremost reference tool.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The forms of liberal government that emerged after World War II are in the midst of a profound crisis. In I Am the People, Partha Chatterjee reconsiders the concept of popular sovereignty in order to explain today’s dramatic outburst of movements claiming to speak for “the people.” To uncover the roots of populism, Chatterjee traces the twentieth-century trajectory of the welfare state and neoliberal reforms. Mobilizing ideals of popular sovereignty and the emotional appeal of nationalism, anticolonial movements ushered in a world of nation-states while liberal democracies in Europe guaranteed social rights to their citizens. But as neoliberal techniques shrank the scope of government, politics gave way to technical administration by experts. Once the state could no longer claim an emotional bond with the people, the ruling bloc lost the consent of the governed. To fill the void, a proliferation of populist leaders have mobilized disaffected groups into a battle that they define as the authentic people against entrenched oligarchy. Once politics enters a spiral of competitive populism, Chatterjee cautions, there is no easy return to pristine liberalism. Only a counter-hegemonic social force that challenges global capital and facilitates the equal participation of all peoples in democratic governance can achieve significant transformation. Drawing on thinkers such as Antonio Gramsci, Michel Foucault, and Ernesto Laclau and with a particular focus on the history of populism in India, I Am the People is a sweeping, theoretically rich account of the origins of today’s tempests.

Why Jesus Appears to People is an intimate, modern-day account of the author’s personal experiences seeing Jesus. It is also an introduction into a lifestyle that positions you for the same encounters. But Jesus came and touched them and said, “Arise, and do not be afraid.” When they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only (Matthew 17:7-8). Being saturated in the Word of God is a gateway into supernatural visitations with Jesus, both in Heaven and on earth—in dreams and in visions. To see Jesus is to be transformed. Why Jesus Appears to People positions you for living a supernaturally transformed life. Also discussed are the traps of satan to fool people—but there are ways you can discern his tactics. And when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, “Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last” (Revelation 1:17). You will be strongly inspired and encouraged knowing that Jesus has not changed. He greatly desires to appear to people today—to enhance and bring love and peace into their lives, your life.

Book excerpt: How people think about education depends on how they understand the notion of 'intelligence'. Teaching reflects assumptions about what kinds of mental qualities are worth having, and about the extent to which those qualities are fixed or malleable. As the idea of 'intelligence' changes, so should the aims and methods of education. It's time to bring intelligence into the real world. In the early 21st century our understanding of the smart mind is changing fast. The demands of society are now quite different from those when schools were first designed, so the kinds of smart necessary to craft a happy and fulfilling life have changed. As life becomes more complex, ambiguous and uncertain, so a different set of mental and emotional attitudes are needed to thrive. Meanwhile, researchers in the cognitive, affective and learning sciences are developing new models of the smart mind that make it clear that bodies, tools and social contacts are as much a part of intelligence as abstract problem-solving. New Kinds of Smart presents the most important of these changes to practising teachers and educators, and invites them to think about their implications for school. Each chapter illustrates the research behind one of the emerging 'new kinds of smart'; summarises the messages that this research has for practitioners; and presents practical examples, tools and templates that educators can use to weave this new strand of thinking into their work as teachers and their lives as learners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do you get away with the murder of 11 million people? The answer is simple—and disturbing. You lie to them. Learn how you can become an informed, passionate citizen who demands honesty and integrity from your leaders. In this nonpartisan New York Times bestselling book, Andy Andrews emphasizes that seeking and discerning the truth is of critical importance, and that believing lies is the most dangerous thing you can do. You’ll be challenged to become a more careful student of the past, seeking accurate, factual accounts of events that illuminate choices our world faces now. By considering how the Nazi German regime was able to carry out over eleven million institutional killings between 1933 and 1945, Andrews advocates for an informed population that demands honesty and integrity from its leaders and from each other. This short, thought-provoking book poses questions like: What happens to a society in which truth is absent? How are we supposed to tell the difference between the “good guys" and the “bad guys”? How does the answer to this question affect our country, families, faith, and values? Does it matter that millions of ordinary citizens aren't participating in the decisions that shape the future of our country? Which is more dangerous: politicians with ill intent, or the too-trusting population that allows such people to lead them? This is a wake-up call: we must become informed, passionate citizens or suffer the consequences of our own ignorance and apathy. We can no longer measure a leader’s worth by the yardsticks provided by the left or the right. Instead, we must use an unchanging standard: the pure, unvarnished truth.
