Book excerpt: Excerpt from People and Their Homes in Groton, Massachusetts, in Olden Time The original purchase was made of the Rev. Gershom Hobart toward the end of the seventeenth or very early in the last century. The town neglected to pay for the land until Mr. Hobart became very much out of patience; and though several burials had been made, he threatened that if the amount agreed upon were not forthcoming and the trans action closed, he would proceed to plough and cultivate the land. This threat had no effect, and so he commenced to carry it into execution by ploughing, but only a few furrows round the outer edge of the ground were required to bring the town to terms, and the money was paid. Mr. Hobart, as the minister, had more or less trouble with the people, and the ill feeling that prevailed on both sides no doubt bad its influence in this matter. Miss Farnsworth said that when she was a child there were ridges noticeable round the out side of the burying ground, that were said to be the remains of Mr. Hobart's furrows. Miss Farnsworth once told me that she remembered, when a child, her grandmother, Lydia Longley Farnsworth, had an old pin cushion which she told her was a gift received when a young girl from her aunt, Lydia Longley, who was in the convent of N otre Danie at Montreal. Mrs. Farnsworth told her granddaughter that having been named for her aunt, that lady sent little gifts from time to time during her childhood. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Community, Groton, Massachusetts: The Story of a Neighborhood One pleasant autumn day in the year 1840, four young men were tramping in company along the Great Road, from Concord to Groton. The party was composed of Theodore Parker and George Ripley of Boston, Christopher P. Cranch of Newton, and A. Bronson Alcott of Concord. To fully appreciate the conditions which led the people of 1840 and the following years. To take up this ism, we must consider that it was a period given up largely to an analysis of all beliefs and dogmas, and that in those days there were not lacking men of independent thought and initiative. There are, no doubt, many pres ent who have not been here for many years, who long ago lived in Groton, and others who attended school here in the days gone by. And it may be that there are some here who never visited the town before, but to whom its soil seems sacred because it was the home of their ancestors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Account of the Early Land-Grants of Groton, Massachusetts It should be borne in mind that the first settlers of the town did not attach the same signification to the word meadow which now belongs to it in New England, where it means low, swampy land, without regard to the mowing. They called by the name meadow all grass-land that was annually mown for hay, and especially that by the side of a river or a brook, and this meaning of the word was the common one in England, whence they brought their language. They sometimes spoke of a swamp, meaning by it what we call a bog, but much of this kind of land has since been reclaimed, and is known with us as meadow. As a matter of fact it happened that the lands which could be mown for the fodder were low lands, and it would require perhaps less than a generation to transfer the meaning of mowing lands to the low lands, which were about the only ones that could be mown in the early days of the colony. This explanation will make clear the following vote of the town, passed February 18, 1680. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. June 26, 1890, he received the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity from his Alma Mater. The formation of a second church in Grotou dates back to the summer of 1825, when the venerable Dr. Chaplin, enfeebled by age, became so infirm that he required the help of an assistant. At that time he was well past eighty years, and the powers of a vigorous manhood were beginning to fail him. On Sunday afternoon, July 10, 1825, a very hot day, Dr. Chaplin, near the end of his sermon, fainted in his pulpit; and soon after the question of settling a colleague pastor came up. This matter gave rise to much controversy and discussion, and resulted in a division of the old parish into two societies. It happened during a period when throughout the Commonwealth many of the Congregational Churches were undergoing great changes in their creed, and were forming new lines of theological belief. Few persons of the present day are aware of the bitter animosity that prevailed in New England at that time, when these churches were torn asunder by internal dissensions, and of the sectarian feeling that followed the division of the parishes. At the beginning of the troubles the Reverend John Todd, a graduate of the Andover Theological Seminary in the class of 1825, had received a call to become a colleague pastor with Rev. Dr. Chaplin, but which, owing to certain informalities, was never recognized by the town, and over his settlement the main controversy had arisen. The second society, in ado up of those who had now separated from the First Parish, was duly organized and a house of worship built, which was dedicated to the service of God on January 3,1827, and at the same time Mr. Todd was ordained in the ministry. He remained as pastor of this society, which...
