Download or read book Food Analysis written by Y. Pomeranz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 788 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of Food Analysis: Theory and Practice was published in 1971 and was revised in 1978. The second edition was published in 1987, and in 1993 we found it necessary to prepare a third edition to reflect and cover the most recent advances in the field of food analysis. A complete revision of a book is an arduous and anguished task. The following are challenges that we wanted to address in this revision: to update the material without eliminating classic and time-preserved and honored methods used by the food analyst; to broaden and deepen the coverage and scope without increasing the size of the book; and to produce a textbook (for senior undergraduate and graduate students) with regard to objectives, scope, and outlay while providing a reference and resource for the worker and researcher in the field of food analysis. To meet those challenges we added much new material and took out practically the same amount of "rel atively outdated" material. Every chapter has been extensively updated and revised; many of the pictures in the previous editions were deleted and, whenever available and appropriate, were replaced by diagrams or flow sheets. In Part I we have expanded the seetions on sampling, preparation of sam pIes, reporting results, and reliability of analyses.

Download or read book The Chemistry of Lignin written by Friedrich Emil Brauns and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-24 with total page 814 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chemistry of Lignin provides a critical review of the literature published from 1949 to 1958. This book provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of lignin chemistry. Organized into 27 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the derivatives that are prepared for the characterization of the mother substance. This text then examines the various kinds of lignin and biosynthetic lignin-like products, which have been characterized by their behavior toward oxidation with nitrobenzene and alkali. Other chapters consider the morphological distribution of lignin in the wood fiber and the place of origin of lignin precursors and of the lignification process. This book discusses as well the formation or biosynthesis of lignin in plants and reviews the structure, isolation, and biosynthesis of lignin. The final chapter deals with producing lignin by the action of enzymes. This book is a valuable resource for lignin chemists, scientists, research workers, and botanists.

Book Synopsis The Role of Green Chemistry in Biomass Processing and Conversion by : Haibo Xie
Download or read book The Role of Green Chemistry in Biomass Processing and Conversion written by Haibo Xie and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-11-21 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sets the stage for the development of sustainable, environmentally friendly fuels, chemicals, and materials Taking millions of years to form, fossil fuels are nonrenewable resources; it is estimated that they will be depleted by the end of this century. Moreover, the production and use of fossil fuels have resulted in considerable environmental harm. The generation of environmentally friendly energy from renewable sources such as biomass is therefore essential. This book focuses on the integration of green chemistry concepts into biomass processes and conversion in order to take full advantage of the potential of biomass to replace nonsustainable resources and meet global needs for fuel as well as other chemicals and materials. The Role of Green Chemistry in Biomass Processing and Conversion features contributions from leading experts from Asia, Europe, and North America. Focusing on lignocellulosic biomass, the most abundant biomass resource, the book begins with a general introduction to biomass and biorefineries and then provides an update on the latest advances in green chemistry that support biomass processing and conversion. Next, the authors describe current and emerging biomass processing and conversion techniques that use green chemistry technologies, including: Green solvents such as ionic liquids, supercritical CO2, and water Sustainable energy sources such as microwave irradiation and sonification Green catalytic technologies Advanced membrane separation technologies The last chapter of the book explores the ecotoxicological and environmental effects of converting and using fuels, chemicals, and materials from biomass. Recommended for professionals and students in chemical engineering, green chemistry, and energy and fuels, The Role of Green Chemistry in Biomass Processing and Conversion sets a strong foundation for the development of a competitive and sustainable bioeconomy. This monograph includes a Foreword by James Clark (University of York, UK).

Book Synopsis Microbial Pentose Utilization by : A. Singh
Download or read book Microbial Pentose Utilization written by A. Singh and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1995-10-30 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microbial utilization of the inexhuaustible lignocellulosic biomass for the production of industrial chemicals, liquid fuels, protein-rich feed and food, and preparation of cellulose polymers, is an attractive approach to help meet energy and food demands. Whilst biomass has served as substrate in microbial processes for the production of alchololic beverages for a long time, it is only recently that broader applications of this material have been envisaged. Hemicellulose-derived sugars have many potential uses in the production of industrial chemicals and solvents. Considerable developments have been made, not only in the improvement of yeast and recombinant bacterial strains, but also in the bioprocessing of these organisms during the last two decades. Although the volume of information available on microbial pentose utilization is increasing, the available literature is mostly scattered. A comprehensive account of recent advances in pentose based bioprocesses is provided along with suggestions for future research. An indispensable volume for graduate students of microbiology, biochemistry, biotechnology and biochemical engineering. The needs of industrial microbiologists, environmental scientists and researchers in the area of carbohydrate utilization and metabolism are also catered for. Industrial organizations involved in developing processes for ethanol and other products from non-conventional sources will also find this volume beneficial.
