Download or read book Law Commission: Fiduciary Duties of Investment Intermediaries: A Consultation Paper - Consultation Paper No 215 written by Great Britain: Law Commission and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The consultation paper Fiduciary Duties of Investments Intermediaries: A Consultation Paper follows on from the Kay Report on UK Equity Markets and Long Term Decision Making (see below), and uses pensions as the example, tracing a chain of intermediaries from the prospective pensioner/saver to the registered shareholder of a UK company. There are well established duties on pension trustees to act in the best interests of scheme members, and it looks at how far these duties require trustees to maximize financial return over a short time scale, and how far trustees can consider other factors such as environmental and social impact. The consultation asks: Whether the law is right to allow trustees to consider ethical issues only in limited circumstances? Whether the legal obligations on trustees are conducive to investment strategies in the best interests of the ultimate beneficiaries? and if not, what specifically ne
Book Synopsis The Pensions Regulator by : Great Britain: National Audit Office
Download or read book The Pensions Regulator written by Great Britain: National Audit Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2007-10-26 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some 20 million people in England and Wales have private sector work-based pension schemes. The Pensions Regulator was established in April 2005 to regulate these schemes, replacing the Occupational Pensions Regulatory Authority (Opra), with the statutory objectives to protect members' benefits, to promote improved governance of such schemes, and to reduce the risk of compensation being paid out by the Pension Protection Fund. This NAO report examines the regulatory approach taken and whether this addresses the key risks, given that any conclusions on the effectiveness of pensions regulation must be set in the long term context rather than based on shorter term fluctuations. Findings include that the Pensions Regulator has made good progress in establishing a sound risk-based approach to regulation, with clear links between its statutory objectives and its operational approach. As the regulator matures, it has the scope for a presumption of further transparency in its approach, and is taking steps to increase the information it makes available to the pensions sector. The report sets out a number of recommendations for further progress, bearing in mind that risks in the pensions environment can change quickly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2011 the World Bank—with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation—launched the Global Findex database, the world's most comprehensive data set on how adults save, borrow, make payments, and manage risk. Drawing on survey data collected in collaboration with Gallup, Inc., the Global Findex database covers more than 140 economies around the world. The initial survey round was followed by a second one in 2014 and by a third in 2017. Compiled using nationally representative surveys of more than 150,000 adults age 15 and above in over 140 economies, The Global Findex Database 2017: Measuring Financial Inclusion and the Fintech Revolution includes updated indicators on access to and use of formal and informal financial services. It has additional data on the use of financial technology (or fintech), including the use of mobile phones and the Internet to conduct financial transactions. The data reveal opportunities to expand access to financial services among people who do not have an account—the unbanked—as well as to promote greater use of digital financial services among those who do have an account. The Global Findex database has become a mainstay of global efforts to promote financial inclusion. In addition to being widely cited by scholars and development practitioners, Global Findex data are used to track progress toward the World Bank goal of Universal Financial Access by 2020 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The database, the full text of the report, and the underlying country-level data for all figures—along with the questionnaire, the survey methodology, and other relevant materials—are available at www.worldbank.org/globalfindex.

Book Synopsis Universal credit by : Great Britain: Department for Work and Pensions
Download or read book Universal credit written by Great Britain: Department for Work and Pensions and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2010-11-11 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This white paper sets out the Government's plans to introduce legislation to reform the welfare system by creating a new universal credit. This universal credit will radically simplify the system to make work pay and combat worklessness and poverty. The consultation document (Cm. 7913, ISBN 9780101791328) spelt out the issues and the consultation responses (Cm. 7971, ISBN 9780101797122), publishing simultaneously with this paper, broadly welcomed the proposals that were put forward. Universal credit is an integrated working-age credit that will provide a basic allowance with additional elements for children, disability, housing and caring. It will support people both in and out of work replacing working tax credit, child tax credit, housing benefit, income support, income-based jobseeker's allowance and income related employment and support allowance. The universal credit will improve financial work incentives by ensuring that support reduction is tapered at a consistent and managed rate. It will also be backed up by a strong system of conditionality. As a simpler system managed by one department it will reduce the scope for costly errors and fraud. The universal credit will not replace: contributory jobseeker's allowance & contributory employment and support allowance which will continue aligned to earnings; disability living allowance; child benefit; and bereavement benefits, statutory sick pay, statutory maternity pay, maternity allowance and industrial injuries disablement benefit

Amongst the Committee's conclusions: rising gas and oil prices are key features of the overall economic outlook and the Committee recommends the Government should make a report to Parliament on progress to secure independent investigation of European gas markets; and it questions the Government's use of taxation instruments as a mechanism to achieve its environmental objectives, for example its decision to freeze the rate of air passenger duty (APD) for a fifth year running.
