Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aldornere and Two Other Pennsylvanian Idylls: Together With Minor Poems The fugitive pieces which follow are selected from among a large number of others which were printed at different periods, and under various circumstances, many of them in early boyhood, and for which the author could desire even a more speedy oblivion than the partiality of his personal friends would accord to them. Premature publication is the fault of ambitious youthful writers; and in this age Of abounding literary production, but little judgment is required to see that a large exercise of the right of suppression is the dictate of good sense. All of the poems contained in the present volume have been subjected to a careful revision, a few alterations have been made, and the whole freed from the innumerable blunders of the printer, who is constantly found lying in ambush, in the most unexpected places, ready to slay the spirit with the letter. Several poetical licences have been discarded; but two or three have been retained. The fugitive pieces were all originally published either in the National anti-slavery Standard, under the man agement of Mr. Gay; The Pennsylvania Freeman; Mr. Conway's Dial or The Liberty Bell, or The Index, Of Boston. If the reader should observe any incongruity of a theological charac ter in the volume, he may account for it on the ground of a gradual change of views in the mind of the author. The author explores McHarg’s formative years, and investigates how his ideas developed in both their complexity and scale. As a precursor to McHarg’s approach in his influential book Design with Nature, this book offers new interpretations into his search for environmental order and outlines how his struggle to understand humanity’s relationship to the environment in an era of rapid social and technological change reflects an ongoing challenge that landscape design has yet to fully resolve. This book will be of great interest to academics and researchers in landscape architectural history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first comprehensive treatment of Plato’s political thought in a long time, John Wallach offers a "critical historicist" interpretation of Plato. Wallach shows how Plato’s theory, while a radical critique of the conventional ethical and political practice of his own era, can be seen as having the potential for contributing to democratic discourse about ethics and politics today. The author argues that Plato articulates and "solves" his Socratic Problem in his various dialogues in different but potentially complementary ways. The book effectively extracts Plato from the straightjacket of Platonism and from the interpretive perspectives of the past fifty years—principally those of Karl Popper, Leo Strauss, Hannah Arendt, M. I. Finley, Jacques Derrida, and Gregory Vlastos. The author’s distinctive approach for understanding Plato—and, he argues, for the history of political theory in general—can inform contemporary theorizing about democracy, opening pathways for criticizing democracy on behalf of virtue, justice, and democracy itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the Civil War, the public lives of American men and women intersected most frequently in the arena of religious activism. Bruce Dorsey broadens the field of gender studies, incorporating an analysis of masculinity into the history of early American religion and reform. His is a holistic account that reveals the contested meanings of manhood and womanhood among antebellum Americans, both black and white, middle class and working class.Urban poverty, drink, slavery, and Irish Catholic immigration--for each of these social problems that engrossed Northern reformers, Dorsey examines the often competing views held by male and female activists and shows how their perspectives were further complicated by differences in class, race, and generation. His primary focus is Philadelphia, birthplace of nearly every kind of benevolent and reform society and emblematic of changes occurring throughout the North. With an especially rich history of African-American activism, the city is ideal for Dorsey's exploration of race and reform.Combining stories of both ordinary individuals and major reformers with an insightful analysis of contemporary songs, plays, fiction, and polemics, Dorsey exposes the ways race, class, and ethnicity influenced the meanings of manhood and womanhood in nineteenth-century America. By linking his gendered history of religious activism with the transformations characterizing antebellum society, he contributes to a larger quest: to engender all of American history.
