Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life's too short to be unhappy at work "I'm working harder than I ever have, and I don't know if it's worth it anymore." If you're a manager or leader, these words have probably run through your mind. So many of us are feeling fed up, burned out, and unhappy at work: the constant pressure and stress, the unending changes, the politics--people feel as though they can't give much more, and performance is suffering. But it's work, after all, right? Should we even expect to be fulfilled and happy at work? Yes, we should, says Annie McKee, coauthor of the bestselling Primal Leadership. In her new transformative book, she makes the most compelling case yet that happiness--and the full engagement that comes with it--is more important than ever in today's workplace, and she sheds new light on the powerful relationship of happiness to individual, team, and organizational success. Based on extensive research and decades of experience with leaders, this book reveals that people must have three essential elements in order to be happy at work: A sense of purpose and the chance to contribute to something bigger than themselves A vision that is powerful and personal, creating a real sense of hope Resonant, friendly relationships With vivid and moving real-life stories, the book shows how leaders can use these powerful pillars to create and sustain happiness even when they're under pressure. By emphasizing purpose, hope, and friendships they can also ensure a healthy, positive climate for their teams and throughout the organization. How to Be Happy at Work deepens our understanding of what it means to be truly fulfilled and effective at work and provides clear, practical advice and instruction for how to get there--no matter what job you have.

Book excerpt: Much of the current discourse on improving school leadership, and particularly the performance of principals, is misguided. There is much too much emphasis on evaluation and standards as determined by policy makers and professors and not nearly enough attention to how one provides performance-driven leadership in the context of day-to-day practice. As an administrator, academic, consultant and researcher, Lytle has traveled widely in the school leadership province. This book draws on his career as a school administrator and his experience teaching leadership at the graduate level. The author uses personal stories to address such questions as: How does one learn to lead? How does one become a leader? How does one teach others to lead? What does it mean to lead for learning?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educational leaders and aspiring leaders are constantly searching for ways to improve the functioning of their institutions. This book provides them with a unique approach to diagnosing a school, school system or college’s organizational health and determining what interventions might be necessary to improve their operations. Each chapter of the book is dedicated to one of the ten essential components of an organization like a school, school system or university. Most of the content of each chapter focuses on the implementation of these components, but there is some emphasis on the supporting theory that speaks to why these leadership practices actually work. We know that administrators are busy people; therefore, at the end of each chapter there is a Diagnostic Checklist of questions that should be helpful in quickly assessing the status of these components in an institution and indicating whether they need to be addressed. In the Appendix, there are two diagnostic instruments; Heart Smart surveys I and II that will help in quantifying the assessment process so that the weaknesses can be easily identified and quickly corrected.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking volume encourages today’s educational leaders to reposition the way they think about leadership and its challenges. Experienced school and district leaders reveal how they conceptualize their roles, how they learn by posing and solving problems of practice, and how they cope with increasing expectations and complexity in their work. This compilation of compelling narratives demonstrates the power and efficacy of what can happen when school, district, and other educational leaders position themselves as inquirers, bringing forth broader social justice and equity implications. Readers see how leadership can illuminate and improve many aspects of institutional life and create intellectually demanding and rich learning environments for both adults and children. At its heart, Repositioning Educational Leadership is an invitation to practitioners and scholars to make space for new critical questions and perspectives. This book nurtures an expanded discourse about leadership, generated by leaders themselves, and arising from some of the most vexing and often invisible aspects of their important work. “This book unpacks a smorgasbord of real-life work situations that will allow the reader to reflect on these experiences and extract the best practices of leadership.” —Daniel A. Domenech, executive director, AASA “Provides invaluable insights into what the complex work of leading from an inquiry stance looks like in different contexts.” —Irma Zardoya, NYC Leadership Academy “This book is a key contribution to the reinvention of the field of educational leadership, and it is crucial for preparing future leaders.” —Michael A. Copland, deputy superintendent, Bellingham (WA) Public Schools

Book excerpt: "This book will demonstrate that when leaders pose previously unnamed problems, and find ways to bring together working groups of students, principals, central office administrators, school faculties, parents, and/or members of the community for joint inquiry, it is more likely that new, effective solutions can be found through participatory processes of rethinking educational practices, categories, policies, and expectations. The argument is that when school, district, and other educational leaders position themselves as inquirers, their leadership can illuminate and improve many aspects of institutional life and create intellectually demanding and rich learning environments - for both adults and children"--

This book identifies ten such role models whose heroic leadership behavior is analyzed in order to reveal what particular abilities and skills made them successful and how those attributes can be applied to one’s own leadership practice, whether that be as a classroom teacher, a principal or a superintendent of schools . They are juxtaposed with ten leaders who were effective, but certainly not heroic. Dr. Palestini points out that effective leaders have been utilizing the same leadership behavior for centuries. He uses this evidence to support the perennial and lasting impact of situational leadership theory which posits that no single way of leading works in all situations. Rather, appropriate leadership behavior depends on the circumstances at a given time. For decades effective managers have been diagnosing the situation, identifying the leadership style or behavior that will be most effective, and then determining whether they can implement the required style. The leadership behavior of ten heroic leaders ranging from Jane Addams to Warren Buffett, and from Abraham Lincoln to Joe Paterno is examined in this book. The lesson learned from these heroic leaders being that if one wishes to hone one’s current leadership skills or become a future leader, one can learn to do so by reflectively looking to those who have established themselves in history as both effective and heroic leaders, that is, leaders who lead with both mind and conscience.
