Book Synopsis How America Was Financed by : Thomas W. Dombroski
Download or read book How America Was Financed written by Thomas W. Dombroski and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-07-11 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author has created an interpretive document detailing the contributions of North East Pennsylvania to the greatness of the United States of America resulting in an economic, financial, and political revitalization of the U.S.A. The book details the accidental and deliberate things that were done during the 130 years of the first use of anthracite coal to further the prosperity of few and the enslavement of many. No other economic factor in the U.S. ever resulted in such great prosperity and economic progress as the discovery and usage of anthracite coal. Without the ingenuity of the Connecticut people and the shrewdness in business of J.P. Morgan, the United States would not the great nation it is today. It is unusual that those who contributed and sacrificed to make this happen benefited the least even to today in northeast Pennsylvania.

Book Synopsis State Banking in Early America by : Howard Bodenhorn
Download or read book State Banking in Early America written by Howard Bodenhorn and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2002-11-28 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Howard Bodenhorn's State Banking in Early America studies the financial experimentation that took place in the United States between 1790 and 1860. Dr. Bodenhorn's book explores regional differences in banking structures, which bear indirectly in the conection between financial and economic development. If a single theme emerges, it is that the United States benefitted from its free banking philosophy in which state governments, rather than a centralized authority, created financial structures designed to serve specific, local needs. Thus decentralized federalism provided state legislatures with a great deal of flexibility in their individual approaches to economic and financial issues. The important lessons to be learned from Dr. Bodenhorn's historical account are that successful banking systems are flexible, predictable, and incentive-compatible; they meet the needs of the borrowers, depositors and shareholders, and they reduce downside risks to generally agreed upon levels. These lessons imply that we cannot, a priori, define an optimal, one-size-fits-all banking system. We need to know something about the formal and informal institutions underlying an economy and about the risk preferences of its citizenry. Historically, outsiders view Americans as experimenters and risk takers. Nowhere is this experimentation and risk taking more apparent than in early American banking policies.

Book Synopsis Finance and Enterprise in Early America by : Donald R. Adams, Jr.

This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stephen Girard, the second richest American of his time after John Jacob Astor, was the last of the great merchant bankers and the first of the great investment bankers. This is a study not only of an influential man and the bank he operated in Philadelphia but also of the growing interdependence between the institutions of government and finance in early nineteenth-century America. In a period when precedents were being set in a new nation and large corporations were beginning to predominate in the business of banking, Girard, a man of undisputed business acumen, established in Philadelphia what was to become the largest private bank of its time and as such a monument to free enterprise. At the same time, along with Astor and other influential financiers, Girard was instrumental in financing the War of 1812 and in establishing the second Bank of the United States. His close association with the Madison administration and the Treasury Department made him a key figure in the evolving relationship between the federal government and the financial community. Applying modern statistical techniques to the comprehensive records of the old Girard Bank, Donald Adams has uncovered a great deal of information, hitherto largely unavailable to scholars, about banking practices in early America. In this book he analyzes day-to-day operations—the kinds of loans that were typical, the devices for maintaining liquidity, the organization of staff—as well as long-run investment decisions and their impact on the formation of American finance. While other studies have been made of the anatomy and influence of early chartered and corporate banks, Adams' is the first history of America's largest private bank. It provides a rare glimpse of the inner structure and strategy of an important financial institution and of the entrepreneurial and political activities of its founder.
