Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1816 London After her mother’s death, Penelope Wood’s hope of opening a bakery falls victim to the real need to support herself. When four retired courtesans present her with a temporary yet lucrative path back to her dream, she wants to hear more. Attending the School of Enlightenment, participating in a Virgin Auction, and becoming a courtesan all sound feasible. The most important rule—do not fall in love. Lord Michael Slade, heir to the Earl of Mansfield, loves his family above all else, cooks for relaxation, and revels in his membership to a discreet spanking club. But his father is ill, and his mother is pushing him to marry. Even so, when he meets a dark-haired beauty who doesn’t mind a good spanking and discovers she’s up for auction, he can’t let her go to another man. He has to have her...at least until he finds a wife. With an inevitable marriage looming and a vow to remain faithful to his hypothetical bride once he’s engaged, both Penelope and Michael must protect their hearts, even as they find a connection they cannot deny.

Book excerpt: Have you ever fallen madly in love with someone who toyed with your emotions, shattered your heart, and left you to pick up the pieces? Whether you're a novice, an intermediate, or seasoned individual on the relationship scene, the common thread is relationships can bring out the best and worst in human beings. This truth is at the essence of Penelope's Purple Passions. The book metaphorically borrows the emergence process of a butterfly to take readers on a journey of how innocent love starts out pure, gets exposed to pain, and uses the experiences to grow in the knowledge of self and love. Author Penelope Chaisson uses lessons from her personal roller coaster experiences and three decades of poetry writing to show different ways of turning a seemingly negative situation into a positive one. If you're at the intersection of love and hurt and need directions to the path of transformation, this is the book for you. Penelope passionately paints pictures with words to convey that love is a beautiful struggle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In revealing patterns of you/thou use in Shakespeare's plays, this study highlights striking and significant shifts from one to the other. Penelope Freedman demonstrates that understanding of the implications of you/thou use in early modern English has been bedevilled by overconcern with issues of power and status, and her careful research, analysing all the plays, reveals how a fuller understanding of Shakespeare's usage can provide a key to unlock puzzles of motive and character, and a glass to clarify relationships and emotions. The work focuses particularly on dialogue between men and women, and sheds new light on male and female language use. The scholarship presented in this volume is augmented with tables and a glossary of linguistic terms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literature explores the human condition, the mystery of the world, life and death, as well as our relations with others, and our desires and dreams. It differs from science in its aims and methods, but Babuts shows in other respects that literature has much common ground with science. Both aim for an authentic version of truth. To this end, literature employs metaphors, and it does so in a manner similar to that of scientific inquiry. The cognitive view does not imply that there is a one-to-one correlation between the world and text, that meaning belongs to the author, or that literature is equivalent to perception. What it does maintain is that meaning is crucially dependent on mnemonic initiatives and that without memory, the world remains meaningless. Nicolae Babuts claims that at the interface with the printed page, readers process texts in a manner similar to the way they explain the visible world: in segments or units of meaning or dynamic patterns.Babuts argues that humans achieve recognition by integrating stimulus sequences with corresponding patterns that recognize and interpret each segment of a text. Memory produces meaning from these patterns. In harmony with its goals, memory may adopt specific strategies to deal with different stimuli. Dynamic patterns link the unit of processing with the unit of meaning. In sum, Babuts proposes that meaning is achieved through metaphors and narrative, and that both are ways to reach cognitive goals. This original study offers perspectives that will interest cognitive psychologists, as well as those simply interested in the process through which literature stirs the human imagination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to Nvengaria, a land where magic happens, shape-shifters are real, and fairy tales come true. England 1819 Wallflower Penelope Trask believes nothing will ever happen in her village of Little Marching, Oxfordshire. Handsome princes only sweep in and carry off innocent maidens in the fairy tales she collects, never in real life. Prince Damien of Nvengaria is tired of living inside a fairy tale. His entire life has been ruled by prophecy, magic, and avoiding being assassinated by his mad father and the head of the Council of Dukes. When his father dies, he inherits a kingdom divided, his opposition led by Grand Duke Alexander, who will do anything to keep the monster's son from ruling Nvengaria. To make good his claim to the throne, Damien must fulfill a prophecy that reunites the lines of the original two princes of Nvengaria, best friends who'd carved a kingdom out of wild lands near the Transylvanian mountains. Damien's task—to bring back the Princess of Nvengaria, her line lost centuries ago. The price of disappointing the people, Alexander promises, will be Damien's execution. Damien tracks down the long-lost princess to the village of Little Marching in England, where nothing remotely interesting ever happens. He will have to convince the lovely Penelope that he is no charlatan, and that Damien's life and his kingdom depends on her facing danger with him. Along the way, the prophecy says, they will fall in love. And the prophecy is never wrong ... Note that the Nvengaria series is a paranormal historical, the books loosely based on well-known fairy tales: Penelope and Prince Charming—Cinderella The Mad, Bad Duke—Beauty and the Beast Highlander Ever After—Snow White and the Seven … Highlanders The Longest Night—Little Red Riding Hood (and the Big, Bad Wolf)

Book excerpt: Penelope’s big-city dreams aren’t turning out exactly as she planned. When she moved away from her family and their small business, she envisioned a life creating fantastical events and taking advantage of all the things New York has to offer. She certainly didn’t see herself making collection calls and being yelled at all day, but she has to do something to pay the rent. She has one good friend at the office, Stella, and they come to the realization that in order for them to make their fantasies a reality, they must take their futures into their own hands. They make a pact that they will get out of this dead-end job and finally strike out to their desired careers. On that same day, Penny has a chance encounter with a kind man and woman on the subway—a couple she has admired on her daily, monotonous commute because they express so much love and affection for one another. She chases after them when they leave an item on the subway car, and in return, they invite her for dinner, which turns into offers of so much more. A career, a chance at love, and an opportunity to show her true self to the world. But is Penny brave enough to step out of the darkness and into the light?

Book excerpt: This text both challenges and traces the development of a culture of regulation, standardization, performativity, and governmentality evident in Anglophone teaching practice and education. Framed by a brief history of teacher education research and policy in North America over the last six decades, the text argues that the instrumentalization of curriculum and pedagogy has robbed teachers of their pedagogical soul, passion, and purpose. Using a conceptual model, Grimmett forges a pathway for teachers to adopt a soulful way forward in professional practice, individually and collectively enhancing autonomy over programs, and protecting the public trust placed in them as educators. This text will benefit researchers, academics, and educators with an interest in teachers and teacher education, educational policy and politics, and curriculum thinking and enactment more broadly. Those specifically interested in pedagogy, educational change and reform, and the philosophy of education will also benefit from this book.
