Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martin Andersen Nexo (1869-1954) was a Danish writer. He was the first author to write about the working class and the first great Danish communist writer. He was born to a large family in a very poor area of Copenhagen, Denmark. After a short career as a worker, he attended a folk high school; later, he worked as a journalist. In the mid-1890s he travelled in Southern Europe, and his book Soldage (1903) is largely based on those travels. Probably his best known and most translated book is Pelle Erobreren (Pelle the Conqueror), the last volume of which was completed in 1910. His other great work was Ditte Menneskebarn (1917-21), a hailing of the working woman and her selfsacrifice as a mother of others. The much debated Midt i en Jaerntid, 1929, (i. e. In an Iron Age, eng. transl. In God's Land) satirises the Danish farmers of World War I. During his last years he wrote a (never fulfilled) trilogy (Morten hin Rode, Den fortabte generation, Jeanette 1944-56) which was partly a continuation of Pelle the Conqueror, partly a masked autobiography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do early films present the Netherlands as a country full of canals and windmills, where people wear traditional costumes and wooden shoes, while industries and modern urban life are all but absent? Images of Dutchness investigates the roots of this visual repertoire from diverse sources, ranging from magazines to tourist brochures, from anthropological treatises to advertising trade cards, stereoscopic photographs, picture postcards, magic lantern slide sets and films of early cinema. This richly illustrated book provides an in-depth study of the fascinating corpus of popular visual media and their written comments that are studied for the first time. Through the combined analysis of words and images, the author identifies not only what has been considered "typically Dutch" in the long nineteenth century, but also provides new insights into the logic and emergence of national clichés in the Western world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, there has been an explosion of critical interest in the icons, genres and traditions of 1970s Italian cult film. Thanks to the international success of directors such as Dario Argento and Sergio Martino, and the influential giallo (thriller) cycle in which they worked, these unconventional and often controversial films are now impacting on new generations of filmmakers, scholars and moviegoers alike. Bodies of Desire and Bodies in Distress: The Golden Age of Italian Cult Cinema 1970–1985 considers the current interest in specific Italian directors and cult genres, exploring the social, political and cultural factors that spawned a decade of cinema dominated by extreme, yet stylish, images of sexuality and violence. Bodies of Desire and Bodies in Distress situates the explosion of 1970s Italian cult ‘excess’ against the toxic backdrop of political violence and terrorist activity that produced shocking images of carnage and crime during this period. The volume also considers why the iconography of the sexually liberated female became recast as a symbol of fear and violation in a range of Italian cult film narratives. In addition, the book also analyses how longstanding regional distinctions between Italy’s urban North and the much maligned rural South fed into sex and death cycles produced between 1970 and 1985. Bodies of Desire and Bodies in Distress profiles leading 1970s Italian directors and performers including Aristide Massaccesi (Joe D’Amato), Laura Gemser, and Dario Argento (who also provides an interview discussing his work and 1970s Italian society). The volume also provides case-studies of the giallo cycle, rape and revenge dramas, the Italian rogue cop series, post-apocalypse films, barbarian movies, and sex comedy formats. By considering the icons and genres from the golden age of Italian cult film alongside the crucial social and sexual tensions that influenced their creation, this book will be of interest to film scholars and cult movie fans alike.

Book excerpt: Islands of Identity: History-writing and identity formation in five island regions in the Baltic Sea Gotland, Aland, Saaremaa, Hiiumaa and Bornholm are five island regions in the Baltic Sea which constitute, or have until recently constituted, provinces or counties of their own. Combining perspectives from two disparate academic fields, uses of history and island studies, this book investigates how regional history writing has contributed to the formation of regional identity on these islands since the year 1800. The special geographic situation of the islands-somewhat secluded from the mainland but also connected to important waterways-has provided their inhabitants with shared historical experiences. Due to varying geographic and historical circumstances, the relationship between regional and national identity is however different on each island. While regional history writing has in most cases aimed at integrating the island into the nation state, it has on Aland in the second half of the 20th century been used to portray its inhabitants as a separate nation. Dramatic political upheavals as the World Wars has also caused shifts in how regional history writing has represented the relationship to the mainland nation state, and has sometimes also resulted in altered national loyalties.

Book excerpt: First published in its English translation in 1903, this memoir is composed from private journal entries of Gaspard Gourgaud as a result of his conversations with Napoleon I of France between June 1815 and March 1818, during the latter’s exile on St. Helena. Additionally, journal entries made by Gourgaud on his voyage to St. Helena with Napoleon are included. “It is hoped that this record of what Napoleon said, taken down by one whose truthfulness Napoleon himself vouched for, may be found interesting by many who might have been wearied by reading the larger part of this record, although it was kept by a man who loved his master devotedly, and who had been attached to his personal service since 1812.” “The one capital and superior record of life at St. Helena is the private journal of General Gourgaud. It was written, in the main at least, for his own eye, without flattery or even prejudice. It is sometimes almost brutal in its realism. He alone of all the chroniclers strove to be accurate, and on the whole succeeded.”—Lord Roseberry, Napoleon: The Last Phase
