Book excerpt: This is a biography of John Pelham, an Alabama native who left West Point for service in the Confederacy and distinguished himself as an artillery commander in Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Blond, blue-eyed, and handsome, Pelham's modest demeanor charmed his contemporaries, and he was famously attractive to women. He was killed in action at the battle of Kelly's Ford in March of 1863, at age twenty four, and reportedly three young women of his acquaintance donned mourning at the loss of the South's ?beau ideal.?.

A New York Times Bestseller After a New York City train leaves the Pelham station at 1:23 p.m., four armed men take control of it—along with seventeen passengers. Their demands are simple: deliver one million dollars, or the hostages will be killed one by one. Fast-paced and intensely psychological, this novel tells the story from the point of view of each of the hijackers—revealing each man’s motivations, desperations, and fatal flaws. The basis of a blockbuster 1974 movie that was remade in 2009 with Denzel Washington and John Travolta, this classic modern thriller will have you on the edge of your seat, and holding on tight. “Entertaining . . . Clever in its details, frequently quite funny, and witty in its comments on how New York City functions . . . [A] slam-bang ending.” —The New York Times “A wild ride.” —The Pittsburgh Press “Harrowing, terrifying, and so, so good.” —BusinessWeek

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pelham, conveys the newer, and I believe, sounder moral, of showing how a man of sense can subject the usages of the world to himself instead of being conquered by them, and gradually grow wise by the very foibles of his youth...Edward George Earle Lytton Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Baron Lytton, PC (25 May 1803 - 18 January 1873) was an English writer and politician. He served as a Whig MP from 1831 to 1841 and a Conservative MP from 1851 to 1866. He was Secretary of State for the Colonies from June 1858 to June 1859, when he selected Richard Clement Moody to be founder of British Columbia. He was offered the Crown of Greece in 1862 after the abdication of King Otto, but declined it. He became Baron Lytton of Knebworth in 1866. His son was the statesman Robert Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Earl of Lytton, who served as Governor-General of India and British Ambassador to France, and wrote poetry under the pseudonym Owen Meredith. Bulwer-Lytton's literary works were highly popular; his novels earned him a fortune. He coined the phrases "the great unwashed," "pursuit of the almighty dollar," "the pen is mightier than the sword," and "dweller on the threshold." Then came a sharp decline in his reputation, so that he is known today for little more than the opening line "It was a dark and stormy night," the first seven words of his novel Paul Clifford (1830). The sardonic Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest attempts to find the "opening sentence of the worst of all possible novels."LifeBulwer-Lytton was born on 25 May 1803 to General William Earle Bulwer of Heydon Hall and Wood Dalling, Norfolk and Elizabeth Barbara Lytton, daughter of Richard Warburton Lytton of Knebworth House, Hertfordshire. He had two older brothers, William Earle Lytton Bulwer (1799-1877) and Henry (1801-1872), later Lord Dalling and Bulwer. When Edward was four, his father died and his mother moved to London. He was a delicate, neurotic child and was discontented at a number of boarding schools. But he was precocious and Mr. Wallington at Baling encouraged him to publish, at the age of fifteen, an immature work, Ishmael and Other Poems. In 1822 he entered Trinity College, Cambridge, where he met John Auldjo, but shortly afterwards moved to Trinity Hall. In 1825 he won the Chancellor's Gold Medal for English verse. In the following year he took his BA degree and printed, for private circulation, a small volume of poems, Weeds and Wild Flowers. He purchased a commission in the army in 1826, but sold it in 1829 without serving. In August 1827, he married Rosina Doyle Wheeler (1802-1882), a famous Irish beauty, but against his mother's wishes, who withdrew his allowance, so that he was forced to work for a living. They had two children, Lady Emily Elizabeth Bulwer-Lytton (1828-1848), and (Edward) Robert Lytton Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Earl of Lytton (1831-1891) who became Governor-General and Viceroy of British India (1876-1880).His writing and political work strained their marriage, while his infidelity embittered Rosina;[10] in 1833 they separated acrimoniously and in 1836 the separation became legal.Three years later, Rosina published Cheveley, or the Man of Honour (1839), a near-libellous fiction bitterly satirising her husband's alleged hypocrisy.[10] In June 1858, when her husband was standing as parliamentary candidate for Hertfordshire, she indignantly denounced him at the hustings. He retaliated by threatening her publishers, withholding her allowance, and denying her access to the children. Finally he had her committed to a mental asylum, but after a public outcry, she was released a few weeks later. This incident was chronicled in her memoir, A Blighted Life (1880).She continued her attacks upon her husband's character for several years. The death of Bulwer-Lytton's mother in 1843 greatly saddened him. His own "exhaustion of toil and study had been completed by great anxiety and grief," and by "about the January of 1844, I was thoroughly shattered."

Book excerpt: Kids Don't Have Backs is a collection of stories by lawyer and former Secretary of the Florida Dept. of Community Affairs Tom Pelham, drawn from his memories of growing up in the late 1940's, 1950's, and early 1960's on a family farm in Holmes County, Florida, in the rural Florida Panhandle. It was a time of economic hardship and transformative change -- electricity came to the area only in the mid 1950's. These stories bring to life, from a child's point of view, many aspects of this challenging and colorful time. Beginning farm life in 1947 in a two-room shanty with no electric lights, indoor plumbing, or air conditioning, and no tractors or modern farm equipment or vehicles to assist in working the land, the author's family, through backbreaking physical labor, ingenuity, and sheer will, overcame tremendous adversity to eventually expand the farm to 400 acres and build and move into a proper house with modern conveniences. The hard work created a thirst for pastimes, and the introduction of vehicles and electricity brought greater access to the outside world via picture shows, the sports pages, radio, and TV, propelling the author and his siblings to explore the world beyond the farm.

Book excerpt: Nicolas Pelham explores how America's overthrow of the Baath partyin Iraq, and the failures of Washington's post-invasion regime spawned a Shiite revolution in the heartland of the Arab world. Through first hand accounts from Saddam's rule to that of the post-Bremer rulers, he traces the turning of the tables from a Sunni- to Shia-led state. Pelham recounts how Shia clerics led the largest protests the region had seen since the Iranian Revolution to topple Paul Bremer, America's Shah in Iraq. As Washington struggled to back peddle, Pelham reveals how the Ayatollahs' drive for elections won power for their acolytes to draft the constitution for a utopian Shia state.
