Book Synopsis Tracing Your Coalmining Ancestors by : Brian Elliott
Download or read book Tracing Your Coalmining Ancestors written by Brian Elliott and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2014-02-11 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A meticulous mixture of social and family history . . . Whether or not you have mining connections, this is an interesting socio-economic read.” —Your Family Tree In the 1920s there were over a million coalminers working in over 3000 collieries across Great Britain, and the industry was one of the most important and powerful in British history. It dominated the lives of generations of individuals, their families, and communities, and its legacy is still with us today—many of us have a coalmining ancestor. Yet family historians often have problems in researching their mining forebears. Locating the relevant records, finding the sites of the pits, and understanding the work involved and its historical background can be perplexing. That is why Brian Elliott’s concise, authoritative and practical handbook will be so useful, for it guides researchers through these obstacles and opens up the broad range of sources they can go to in order to get a vivid insight into the lives and experiences of coalminers in the past. His overview of the coalmining history—and the case studies and research tips he provides—will make his book rewarding reading for anyone looking for a general introduction to this major aspect of Britain’s industrial heritage. His directory of regional and national sources and his commentary on them will make this guide an essential tool for family historians searching for an ancestor who worked in coalmining underground, on the pit top or just lived in a mining community. As featured in Who Do You Think You Are? Magazine and the Barnsley Chronicle.

Download or read book The Power of the 9Fs written by Gavin W. Morrison and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numbering a grand total of 251, the '9F' 2-10-0s represented one of the final developments of the main line steam locomotive in Britain and also the single most numerous of the BR standard classes. Designed under the auspices of Riddles at Crewe and built at Swindon, the first of the class was to emerge in 1954. However, by the date that the first of the locomotives was entering service, the death knell was already being sounded for main line steam operation in Great Britain. In 1955, the Modernisation Plan, with its emphasis upon diesel and electric traction, was to result in the decision to phase steam out and, whilst the class continued to be built until late 1960 (when Evening Star became the last main line steam locomotive constructed for BR), many of the type only had a woefully short operational life, many being withdrawn with less than 10 years of service.Although perceived primarily as a heavy freight locomotive- and duties such as the heavy iron between Tyne Dock and Consett became one of the trademarks- the locomotives also performed successfully on more glamorous passenger turns, with enthusiasts having many fond memories of the class's operation over the Somerset & Dorset line during the early 1950s. In his latest contribution to the hugely successful 'Power of' series, noted railway photographer and author Gavin Morrison turns his attention to this important, but often overlooked class. Drawing upon some 250 mono illustrations from his own collection and from those of other noted railways photographers, he records the development and operational history of the class from their origins in the early 1950s through to their final withdrawal from mainline service in the late 1960s and preservation.

Download or read book The Railway written by Andrew Dow and published by Wharncliffe. This book was released on 2014-10-30 with total page 1156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Never before has a comprehensive history been written of the track used by railways of all gauges, tramways, and cliff railways, in Great Britain. And yet it was the development of track, every bit as much as the development of the locomotive, that has allowed our railways to provide an extraordinarily wide range of services. Without the track of today, with its laser-guided maintenance machines, the TGV and the Eurostar could not cruise smoothly at 272 feet per second, nor could 2,000-ton freight trains carry a wide range of materials, or suburban railways, over and under the ground, serve our great cities in a way that roads never could. Andrew Dow's account of the development of track, involving deep research in the papers of professional institutions as well as rare books, company records and personal accounts, paints a vivid picture of development from primitive beginnings to modernity. The book contains nearly 200 specially-commissioned drawings as well as many photographs of track in its very many forms since the appearance of the steam locomotive in 1804. Included are chapters on electrified railways, and on the development of mechanised maintenance, which revolutionised the world of the platelayer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The perfect new gift from the bestselling author of Britain's 1000 Best Churches It is the scene for our hopeful beginnings and our intended ends, and the timeless experiences of coming and going, meeting, greeting and parting. It is an institution with its own rituals and priests, and a long-neglected aspect of Britain's architecture. And yet so little do we look at the railway station. Simon Jenkins has travelled the length and breadth of Great Britain, from Waterloo to Wemyss Bay, Betws-y-Coed to Beverley, to select his hundred best. Blending his usual insight and authority with his personal reflections and experiences - including his founding the Railway Heritage Trust - the foremost expert on our national heritage deftly reveals the history, geography, design and significance of each of these glories. Beautifully illustrated with colour photographs throughout, this joyous exploration of our social history shows the station's role in the national imagination; champions the engineers, architects and rival companies that made them possible; and tells the story behind the triumphs and follies of these very British creations. These are the marvellous, often undersung places that link our nation, celebrated like never before.
Book Synopsis Narrow Gauge Lines of the British Isles by : Peter Johnson
Download or read book Narrow Gauge Lines of the British Isles written by Peter Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2014-03-15 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although standard gauge railways - albeit of different gauges - came to dominate the railways of Britain and Ireland, there was also a considerable number of narrow gauge lines constructed throughout the British Isles. Whilst many of these were built almost exclusively for industrial purposes and never saw regular passenger service, a significant number from the Cambeltown & Machrihanish on the Mull of Kintyre, to the Southwold on the Suffolk Coast and the Lynton & Barnstaple in North Devon, carried regular passenger services. This book looks in detail at the narrow gauge lines across the British Isles.
