Book excerpt: Li Dexiu Sanzijing School of Pediatric Tui-na Therapy is the translation of the Chinese work which was published in 2016 by People’s Medical Publishing House. Master Li Dexiu established the Sanzijing School of Pediatric Tui-na therapy, and a large number of children have benefited from his magic Tui-na therapy. This work discusses the characteristics of Master Li’s therapy and the basic techniques and acupoints used during the treatment for common children’s diseases. It offers typical clinical cases in which Master Li’s Tui-na therapy was applied. This book also devotes two chapters to the annotations to and interpretations of the original Chinese texts of Li’s Tui-na Sanzijing. The last few chapters introduce some special prescriptions for children’s diseases used by Master Li, summarize the acupoints for treating typical pediatric diseases, and provide the Tui-na techniques which can substitute herbal treatment. The last chapter introduces the application of clearing and complementing techniques, which are the core techniques of Master Li’s therapy.

This clearly illustrated guide is designed to give all health care providers--massage therapists, homeopathic and allopathic practitioners, and bodyworkers--who know the general concepts of traditional Chinese medicine the tools and knowledge they need to successfully use Chinese pediatric massage in treating their patients. Effective on children from birth through preadolescence, Chinese pediatric massage is a valuable therapeutic addition to the repertoire of any practitioner. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on past knowledge, practices, personnel and institutions of Chinese health care has focussed on printed text for many decades. The Berlin collections of handwritten Chinese volumes on health and healing from the past 400 years provide a hitherto unprecedented access to a wide range of data. They extend the reach of medical historiography beyond the literature written by and for a small social elite to the reality of health care as practiced by private households, lay healers, pharmacists, professional doctors, magicians, itinerant healers and others. The nearly 900 volumes surveyed here for the first time demonstrate the heterogeneity of Chinese traditional healing. They evidence the continuation of millennia-old therapeutic approaches long discarded by the elite, and they show continuous adaptation to more recent trends.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is the volume of “History of Science and Technology in the Ming Dynasty” among a series of books of “Deep into China Histories”. The earliest known written records of the history of China date from as early as 1250 BC, from the Shang dynasty (c. 1600–1046 BC) and the Bamboo Annals (296 BC) describe a Xia dynasty (c. 2070–1600 BC) before the Shang, but no writing is known from the period The Shang ruled in the Yellow River valley, which is commonly held to be the cradle of Chinese civilization. However, Neolithic civilizations originated at various cultural centers along both the Yellow River and Yangtze River. These Yellow River and Yangtze civilizations arose millennia before the Shang. With thousands of years of continuous history, China is one of the world's oldest civilizations, and is regarded as one of the cradles of civilization. The Zhou dynasty (1046–256 BC) supplanted the Shang and introduced the concept of the Mandate of Heaven to justify their rule. The central Zhou government began to weaken due to external and internal pressures in the 8th century BC, and the country eventually splintered into smaller states during the Spring and Autumn period. These states became independent and warred with one another in the following Warring States period. Much of traditional Chinese culture, literature and philosophy first developed during those troubled times. In 221 BC Qin Shi Huang conquered the various warring states and created for himself the title of Huangdi or "emperor" of the Qin, marking the beginning of imperial China. However, the oppressive government fell soon after his death, and was supplanted by the longer-lived Han dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD). Successive dynasties developed bureaucratic systems that enabled the emperor to control vast territories directly. In the 21 centuries from 206 BC until AD 1912, routine administrative tasks were handled by a special elite of scholar-officials. Young men, well-versed in calligraphy, history, literature, and philosophy, were carefully selected through difficult government examinations. China's last dynasty was the Qing (1644–1912), which was replaced by the Republic of China in 1912, and in the mainland by the People's Republic of China in 1949.Chinese history has alternated between periods of political unity and peace, and periods of war and failed statehood – the most recent being the Chinese Civil War (1927–1949). China was occasionally dominated by steppe peoples, most of whom were eventually assimilated into the Han Chinese culture and population. Between eras of multiple kingdoms and warlordism, Chinese dynasties have ruled parts or all of China; in some eras control stretched as far as Xinjiang and Tibet, as at present. Traditional culture, and influences from other parts of Asia and the Western world (carried by waves of immigration, cultural assimilation, expansion, and foreign contact), form the basis of the modern culture of China.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pediatrics in Chinese Medicine is different from any English TCM pediatrics textbook available today, and also different from standard TCM pediatrics textbooks as written in China. As an important part of TCM clinical medicine, the essence of TCM pediatrics emphasizes the overall concept of treatment based on pattern differentiation as associated with the interchange of yin and yang, integration of form and spirit, zang-fu organ and channel theory, formulas studies, and dietary therapy and nursing, all of which guide the clinical practice of TCM pediatrics. On the basis of traditional textbooks on TCM pediatrics, and in consideration of our readership, we have added extra material on acupuncture and Tui Na. In the process of selecting diseases, we have listed those for which TCM treatments are effective and distinctive, while also taking into account the worldwide incidence of childhood diseases. For the student’s convenience, the appendices include the dosages of Chinese medicinals and formulas, patent Chinese medicines for common pediatric diseases, an index of diseases names, and commonly used English and Chinese terms. We are sorry that the DVD content are not included.
