Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pedagogical Ideals: As Portrayed by Leading, Living Educators; Being a Compilation of the Best Thoughts of Many of the Leading Educators of the Day Upon Living Educational Issues and Actual School-Room Life These thoughts emanated from the minds of leading educators of the present day and have nearly all been uttered or written dur ing the past four years; and while some matter presented may not appear to come up to the ideal, yet, in the main, it approximates the ideal sufficiently to justify the title of the book. Much that is written upon the various interesting topics of the times in which we live reaches us through the columns of popular magazines and periodicals of the day, is read with or without com ment, is then, inmost cases, carelessly cast aside, and in a few short months almost wholly relegated to Oblivion. Even though the theme be of momentous import, the author of world-wide fame, and the language of classic merit, its common fate is that of one of our meanest daily newspapers. The author, while reading the leading educational journals of the United States during the past four years, has been enabled to collect and preserve the material for this little volume - collected and arranged at first for his own reference and pleasure. But he has concluded, at last, that the collection merits publication and that other teachers should share the riches of this little store. Book Synopsis Discourses We Live By: Narratives of Educational and Social Endeavour by : Hazel R. Wright
Download or read book Discourses We Live By: Narratives of Educational and Social Endeavour written by Hazel R. Wright and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2020-07-03 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the influences that govern how people view their worlds? What are the embedded values and practices that underpin the ways people think and act? Discourses We Live By approaches these questions through narrative research, in a process that uses words, images, activities or artefacts to ask people – either individually or collectively within social groupings – to examine, discuss, portray or otherwise make public their place in the world, their sense of belonging to (and identity within) the physical and cultural space they inhabit. This book is a rich and multifaceted collection of twenty-eight chapters that use varied lenses to examine the discourses that shape people’s lives. The contributors are themselves from many backgrounds – different academic disciplines within the humanities and social sciences, diverse professional practices and a range of countries and cultures. They represent a broad spectrum of age, status and outlook, and variously apply their research methods – but share a common interest in people, their lives, thoughts and actions. Gathering such eclectic experiences as those of student-teachers in Kenya, a released prisoner in Denmark, academics in Colombia, a group of migrants learning English, and gambling addiction support-workers in Italy, alongside more mainstream educational themes, the book presents a fascinating array of insights. Discourses We Live By will be essential reading for adult educators and practitioners, those involved with educational and professional practice, narrative researchers, and many sociologists. It will appeal to all who want to know how narratives shape the way we live and the way we talk about our lives.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religious education in Nigeria is in a state of transformation, owing to the country's current pluralist nature among other factors. In the process, concepts of religion and education are revisited and reassessed in order to make them meaningful to mankind in his pluralist world. With this book, author Michael Okoh inaugurates a fundamental revision. He brings traditional African education and values alongside Christian ideals into dialogue with the "Western progressive learning approaches," paving new ways for religious education activity in Nigeria, particularly in Igboland. This book was released on 2009-04-07 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some revision of public schooling history is necessary to challenge the dominant mythology that public schools were established on the grounds of values-neutrality. In fact, those responsible for the foundations of public education in Australia were sufficiently pragmatic to know that its success relied on its charter being in accord with public sentiment. Part of the pragmatism was in convincing those whose main experience of education had been through some form of church-based education that state-based education was capable of meeting the same ends. Hence, the documents of the 1870s and 1880s that contained the charters of the various state and territory systems witness to a breadth of vision about the scope of education. Beyond the standard goals of literacy and numeracy, education was said to be capable of assuring personal morality for each individual and a suitable citizenry for the soon-to-be new nation. As an instance, the NSW Public Instr- tion Act of 1880 (cf. NSW, 1912), under the rubric of “religious teaching”, stressed the need for students to be inculcated into the values of their society, including understanding the role that religious values had played in forming that society’s legal codes and social ethics. The notion, therefore, that public education is part of a deep and ancient heritage around values neutrality is mistaken and in need of se- ous revision. The evidence suggests that public education’s initial conception was of being the complete educator, not only of young people’s minds but of their inner character as well.
