Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pebbles From the Path of a Pilgrim In the path of pilgrimage there are many rough and toilsome places, and often the wayfarer's feet are worn and wearied with the march, and bruised by pebbles that are scattered along the road. Yet some of these are precious stones, and are well worth preserving. And so I have gathered up a few of the pebbles in the path, and as the journey's end seems drawing on, I love to look over the treasures which memory has stored up, and show to my fellow travelers some of the precious things which I have found in the way that the Lord hath led me. This little book is a book of facts, not of fancies; of pebbles, not of fables. It has been the distinct intention, to embellish nothing and to invent nothing; but simply to represent facts as they actually occurred in the gone-by years. Many precious things have escaped from memory, and names and dates and places have sometimes been lost beyond recall; but the facts here related stand clearly out upon memory's pages, and in many instances they have been and can be confirmed by the testimony of two or three witnesses, by which every word shall be established. Book Synopsis Plain Lectures on the Pilgrim's Progress (Classic Reprint) by : Robert Nourse

This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plain Lectures on the Pilgrim's Progress The Following Lectures are substantially those which I delivered on Sabbath evenings in the city of Springfield, Illinois, during the winter months of 1877-'78. I have added fresh literary material to the first Lecture, in the hope that it may meet the need of Clerical Brethren, who may wish to deliver a similar course, but who possessing small libraries themselves, and living too far from city libraries, are unable to consult authorities or collate opinions on the subject. It is thought that sufficient has been brought together in this way to enable any brother to form an independent estimate of John Bunyan, his book, and its influence. The reader will doubtless discover a difference in the style of the later lectures. This is owing to the fact that they were stenographically reported by Mr. Volney Hickox. The earlier ones are re-composed from my manuscript notes and from reports which appeared in the Illinois State Journal. In delivering these Lectures I used as text-book an edition of "Pilgrim's Progress," published by Cassell, Petter & Galpin. For the purpose, I knew of no better one. Book Synopsis Fundamentalists in the City by : Margaret Lamberts Bendroth
Download or read book Fundamentalists in the City written by Margaret Lamberts Bendroth and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005-07-14 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamentalists in the City is a story of religious controversy and division, set within turn of the century and early twentieth-century Boston. It offers a new perspective on the rise of fundamentalism, emphasizing the role of local events, both sacred and secular, in deepening the divide between liberal and conservative Protestants. The first part of the narrative, beginning with the arrest of three clergymen for preaching on the Boston Common in 1885, shows the importance of anti-Catholicism as a catalyst for change. The second part of the book deals with separation, told through the events of three city-wide revivals, each demonstrating a stage of conservative Protestant detachment from their urban origins.

Download or read book Grace Abounding written by John Bunyan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although this book was written more than 300 years ago, The Pilgrim's Progress continues to be reprinted and gain new readers throughout the years. It has also been published in no less than 200 languages and is widely read the world over, so much so that it is said to be second to the Bible in terms of readership. The author sails through his narrative without dividing it into chapters. Instead, he separates his saga into 2 parts. He begins with a poetic Apology before taking readers to the first-person account of Christian, the Pilgrim and main protagonist of this Christian-themed story. The Pilgrim Christian's experience is the highlight of the first part of the book. The second part reveals the experiences of Christian's wife, Christiana, as well as his four sons. In part I, they did not accompany Christian on his pilgrimage as they could not be persuaded to do so. In part II, they decide to go through the same route that Christian took and went through various difficulties unique to them. The other characters in the book are named after certain personality attributes. Obstinate, Formalist, Hopeful, and Faithful are just some of them. In addition, some settings and places are named after Biblical locations, such as Mount Zion and Mount Sinai. This particular 1910 edition comes with beautiful monochromatic and highly detailed illustrations by Frank C. Pape. Christian readers definitely will enjoy reading and learning from this allegorical story more with the inclusion of Pape's images. The Aran Islands, in Galway Bay off the west coast of Ireland, are a unique geological and cultural landscape, and for centuries their stark beauty and their inhabitants’ traditional way of life have attracted pilgrims from abroad. After a visit with his wife in 1972, Tim Robinson moved to the islands, where he started making maps and gathering stories, eventually developing the idea for a cosmic history of Árainn, the largest of the three islands. Pilgrimage is the first of two volumes that make up Stones of Aran, in which Robinson maps the length and breadth of Árainn. Here he circles the entire island, following a clockwise, sunwise path in quest of the “good step,” in which walking itself becomes a form of attention and contemplation. Like Annie Dillard’s Pilgrim at Tinker Creek and Bruce Chatwin’s In Patagonia, Stones of Aran is not only a meticulous and mesmerizing study of place but an entrancing and altogether unclassifiable work of literature. Robinson explores Aran in both its elemental and mythical dimensions, taking us deep into the island’s folklore, wildlife, names, habitations, and natural and human histories. Bringing to life the ongoing, forever unpredictable encounter between one man and a given landscape, Stones of Aran discovers worlds. Robinson’s voyage continues in Stones of Aran: Labyrinth

Book Synopsis A High and Noble Mission by : Robert W. Price
Download or read book A High and Noble Mission written by Robert W. Price and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-09-21 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They were turbulent years, the ones following America's Civil War. The emancipation of those held in slavery opened new ministry opportunities for Northern churches. Previously blocked from reaching any held as slaves, they now were free to preach the Good News to the poor, helping "bind up the nation's wounds." They did their best to follow the Lord's example--setting prisoners free, releasing the oppressed, and especially as Adventists, proclaiming the year of the Lord's favor. Individuals discovered within this new mission field, the Freedmen, willingly came to hear the Word of the Lord proclaimed. Among their many physical and spiritual needs, one request arose high above all others. The Freedmen wanted to read. That privilege had been vigorously denied in the past, but now, with freedom a reality--they wanted schools. Many had the noblest of reasons. Having heard preaching and teaching from the Bible all their lives, they now wanted to read those words on their own. Others wanted an education to help secure the new liberties coming their way. Northern churches sent more preachers than teachers, yet schools were established. While teaching the new converts to read the Bible, missionaries were pressed to go beyond that introductory level. However, churches on the home front seldom saw the need for expensive schools and only reluctantly supported anything beyond the preaching ministry. Meanwhile, the surrounding White community was strongly opposed to any schooling at all. Teachers were threatened, housing denied, and some schools burned to the ground. Missionaries stood in the middle, seeking to please both the sending churches and the Black Freedmen, while maintaining peace within an oftentimes hostile community. They were overworked, financially under-supported, and all suffered from "burnout"; a few even paid the ultimate sacrifice. Yet many individual lives were wondrously transformed as they participated in this most high and noble Christian mission. 96
