Book excerpt: I.B.Tauris in association with the Institute of Ismaili Studies Nasir-i Khusraw is a major literary figure in medieval Persian culture. He was a Muslim philosopher, poet, travel writer, and Ismaili da'i who lived a thousand years ago in the lands known today as Afghanistan, Iran, and Tajikistan. Although known in the West mainly for his Safarnama, or travelogue, which describes his seven-year journey from Khurasan, in the eastern Islamic lands, to Cairo, the city of the Fatimid imam-caliphs, his poetry and ideas are less familiar. Yet, over the centuries, Persian-speaking lands have consistently ranked him as one of the finest poets of all time. But today, even among those who know Nasir-i Khusraw's poetry, few understand the philosophical and Ismaili concepts the poet expounds. And while mystical and epic genres of Persian poetry are memorized and studied, the genre of philosophical poetry in Persian remains basically unexplored. This collection of studies seeks to redress the balance. Originally presented at a conference at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London in 2005 to commemorate the millenary of Nasir-i Khusraw's birth, the papers published here examine his poetry both for philosophical meaning and poetic method. They address a variety of topics, ranging from metaphysics, cosmology, and ontology to prophecy, as well as rhythm and structure, and analysis of individual poems and authorship.

Book excerpt: If we open our hearts to God, He is waiting and willing to walk with us through difficult times. He wants us to have an attitude of praise, as this will usher in His presence and strengthen our relationship with Him. It can be difficult, during tough times, to find an attitude of praise, but what if it was something you could find any day, in any circumstance? Through struggles and trials, cancer survivor Bobbi Jane Huerta has been able to find strength, hope, and peace by praying and meditating on Gods Word. Pearls of Grace is a collection of her inspirational poetry, penned during quiet moments spent seeking the Lord. To enlighten and educate, scripture is cited to accompany each poem. Bobbis hope and prayer is that readers will be inspired to delve deeper into Gods Word and discover His gift of grace along with a treasure more precious than pearls: true love for the Lord. It is possible to praise Gods light even in the darkest of times if we turn to His Word and His loving faithfulness. The question is, are you ready to accept peace and everlasting love?

Book excerpt: Just as pine cones and pearls are a contrast of textures, so is this book, a contrast of subjects and thoughts presented in a variety of styles. Some people will connect with the material and others may not. I hope as you read this book, you will connect with something in a poem or essay. In our hearts, we each have a story to tell and I encourage you as I was encouraged, to share that story, that poem or those thoughts in some way with another person just as I have done in Pine Cones and Pearls. Over the years I have dabbled in writing poetry and short stories. Most of them had been placed in a book, tucked away in a closet and forgotten. This book is the result of cleaning out the closet. These writings are a combination of old and new material that depict experiences occurring in my life.
