Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When viewers think of film noir, they often picture actors like Humphrey Bogart playing characters like Sam Spade in The Maltese Falcon, the film based on the book by Dashiell Hammett. Yet film noir is a genre much richer. The authors first examine the debate surrounding the parameters of the genre and the many different ways it is defined. They discuss the Noir City, its setting and backdrop, and also the cultural (WWII) and institutional (the House UnAmerican Activities Committee, and the Production Code Administration) influences on the subgenres. An analysis of the low budget and series film noirs provides information on those cult classics. With over 200 entries on films, directors, and actors, the Encyclopedia of Film Noir is the most complete resource for film fans, students, and scholars.

Book excerpt: From the tobacco and cotton fields in North Carolina to working in middle management in a Fortune 500 company, Bales & Bolls chronicles E. J. Cash's journey to overcome the problems of her dysfunctional upbringing in the Jim Crow South of the forties and fifties. Struggling to survive the erratic behavior of her alcoholic father with his Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde personality created fear, conflict, and confusion, as she grappled with his attempts to rape her, his voyeurism, and his brutal use of the belt. And her mother's silence strained their relationship, causing a breach difficult to overcome. Hers is a hard-fought journey breaking free from Jim Crow and its limitations from without and her father's lewdness and her mother's complicity from within. Then she stumbled into a relationship with God, beginning a spiritual journey leading to the discovery of God's transforming power of healing through repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

Book Synopsis Living with the Aftermath by : Joy Damousi
Download or read book Living with the Aftermath written by Joy Damousi and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-04-02 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This very moving book on the shifting patterns of mourning and grief focuses on the experiences of Australian women who lost their husbands during the Second World War and the wars in Korea and Vietnam. The book makes use of extensive oral testimonies to illustrate how widows internalised and absorbed the traumas of their husband's war experience. Joy Damousi is able to demonstrate that a significant shift in attitudes towards grieving and loss came about between the mid century and the later part of the twentieth century. In charting the memory of grief and its expression, she discerns a move away from the denial and silence which shaped attitudes in the 1950s towards a much fuller expression of grief and mourning and perhaps a new way of understanding death and loss at the beginning of the new century.
