Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pear Growing in California Seeds of commercial pears were planted in the early days of mining in the Sierra foothills of the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys, and a few oriental pears were set out by the Chinese immigrants. Later, graft ing wood and grafted trees of many varieties, brought from the missions, from eastern states, and even from Europe, were grown to supply fruit to miners and other new settlers. With the discovery of gold, certain enterprising young men who had come in search of the precious ore found that more money could be made by supplying fruit for the satisfaction of the prodigal miners, than by panning gold; and pear growing gained impetus. According to Wickson, the Bartlett was brought around the Horn in 1850 and planted in the Napa Valley. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. At blossoming time the bacteria in the diseased portions of infected trees become active. Gum, laden with the bacteria, exudes from these points of infection and is carried into the blossoms or new tender twigs. By insects. Beginning thus in the blossoms or twigs in the early spring, the bacteria travel slowly downward in the bark to the larger branches, trunks, and roots, producing the characteristic gumming cankers in the bark. Insects continue to spread the disease throughout. The spring and summer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pears of New York The Pears of New York is sixth in the series of books on hardy fruits being published by the New York Agricultural Experiment Station. The object and scope of these treatises have been given in prefaces of the preceding books, and though this work does not differ from its predecessors, for the convenience of readers the aim and the contents of the book in hand are set forth in this foreword. Broadly speaking, the aim is to make The Pears of New York a complete record of the development of the pear wherever cultivated up to the present time. With this end in View an attempt is made: To give an account of the history and uses of the pear; to depict the botanical characters of cultivated pears; to describe pear growing in this country and more particularly in New York; and, lastly, to give in full detail the synonymy, bibliography, economic status, and full descriptions of the most important cultivated pears with brief notices of varieties of minor importance. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Apple Growing in California With the large crop of 1926 in practically all sections, prices received for California apples were extremely low. However, the eight-year averages of total value, when compared with comparable figures of other deciduous fruits during the same period, show the value of California's apple crop to have been approximately three times that of either cherries or shipping plums, three times the almond crop, about one million and a half dollars in excess of the pear crop, and almost as great as that of apricot crop. In 1920 and 1921 rather extensive new plantings were made in Sonoma, Butte, San Bernardino, Kern, and Inyo counties. During the past five years new plantings have not been so extensive except in Sonoma and Tuolumne counties. The total number of non-bearing trees for the state now shows a slight decline, while the bearing acreage shows a gradual and consistent increase. With the exception of 1923, a heavy crop year, production has been relatively uniform. Yields on the Whole are dependable, not being so seriously affected by frosts and drought as are the orchards of the eastern states. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cold Storage, With Special Reference to the Pear and Peach Before the advent of the cold-storage busmess the supply of summer pears frequently exceeded the demand. This condition of the markets, which were demoralized in hot, humid seasons, pertained especially to the early varieties, like the Bartlett, which ripen in hot weather and need to be sold in a Short time to prevent heavy losses from rapid decay. The introduction of the refrigerator car and of the cold-storage warehouse, together with the rapid growth of the canning industry, has done much to improve the pear situation by artificially establish ing a well-regulated and more uniform supply of fruit throughout a longer period of time. The pear acreage of the country has more than doubled within a decade, and is enlarging the relative importance of cold storage to the pear-growing business, though a large part of the increase, especially in California, along the Atlantic coast from New Jersey southward, in Texas, and in the Central West, is primarily related to the canning industry.
