Book excerpt: Iowa DOT research in 1986, demonstrated that carbide tooth milling can produce an acceptable surface texture. Based upon that research, specifications were developed for "Pavement Surface Repair (Milling)". This specification was applied to reprofile a nine-mile section of badly faulted portland cement concrete (pcc) pavement on route 163 just east of Des Moines. The Profile Index (measured with a 25-foot California Profilograph) was improved from an average of 55.2 inches per mile prior to milling to 10.6 inches per mile after milling. The bid price was $0.75 per square yard for pcc containing limestone coarse aggregate and $1.21 for pcc containing gravel coarse aggregate. Carbide tooth milling should be considered as an acceptable alternate method of reprofiling even though there is some spalling of joints

Book excerpt: This pavement macrotexture review is for highway engineers and administrators concerned with the improvement of pavement surface texture as a countermeasure for skidding accidents. A summary is presented of the fundamentals of tire-pavement skid resistance and the importance of pavement surface texture in reducing skidding accidents. This includes a discussion of the skid number and skid number-speed gradient and of the role of pavement surface microtexture and macrotexture in skid resistance. The most commonly used methods of measuring pavement macrotexture are described, and ways of achieving high macrotexture in new pavements and of restoring high macrotexture in existing pavements are given.

Book excerpt: Polishing of surface texture warrants a rehabilitative treatment that addresses just the surface for safe riding experience. The rate of polishing was found to be proportional to the hardness of the aggregates used in the concrete mixture. The lack of hard aggregates is prompting a surface texture rehabilitation every 2 to 3 years which is neither economical nor sustainable. In this context, the texture generated during diamond grinding operation is believed to be enough to provide the required skid resistance. Diamond grinding is a part of a Concrete Pavement Rehabilitation (CPR) technique that is used primarily to plane the pavement surface. The practice results in a strong macrotexture that is adequate to provide an improvement in the skid resistance of the pavement. This study initiates the process of investigation of the parameters and the effectiveness of diamond grinding in a laboratory setting. It was observed that the configuration of diamond grinding adopted is dependent on the type of aggregate as the exposed coarse aggregate polishing is responsible for the loss of the generated macrotexture. A protocol is developed in which the pavements that are experiencing low skid resistance are selected and subjected to a series of different textures. An optimal configuration is suggested based on the polishing performance of each section with different textures. This laboratory based protocol is quick and can provide the interested agency with an optimal configuration within a short period of time and with reliable accuracy. Most importantly, this practice saves the cost of implementation of different configurations on the pavement section. This study explains the developed protocol and applies it to four sections that have polished surfaces in the Dallas and Fort Worth districts, in the state of Texas. A part of this study also explores the potential of re-grinding a section after the textured surface is polished. An equal performance was observed after re-grinding suggesting that a pavement can be ground multiple times before the need (and budget) for an overlay arises.

The cost-effectiveness considerations in selecting high macrotexture pavement surfaces are also discussed"--Technical report documentation p.

Book excerpt: Better practices to improve surface properties and thus tire-pavement noise are really about establishing a higher order of control over the texture and other surface properties. It is not about designing or building "innovative" surfaces, but rather the control of conventional texturing techniques. There should be a renewed awareness of the impact that some of the subtle operational characteristics can have on the texture as constructed. Predictable tire-pavement noise levels are not about how the texture is imparted as much as they are about the recognition and management of the sources of variability. Regarding the concrete, noise levels have to do with the fact that the contractors are imparting texture into a material with inherent variability in both stiffness and plasticity. Concrete changes from batch-to-batch, and it changes within a batch. The wind and the sun play a major role, as does the timing of the concrete mixing, transport, placement, and (eventually) the texturing and curing (the latter being important for acoustical durability).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Highway noise is one of the most pressing of the surface characteristics issues facing the concrete paving industry. This is particularly true in urban areas, where not only is there a higher population density near major thoroughfares, but also a greater volume of commuter traffic. In 2004 and 2005, the Federal Highway Administration, Iowa State University, and the American Concrete Pavement Association initiated a five-year, multi-million dollar Portland Cement Concrete Surface Characteristics Program. This program is administered through the National Concrete Pavement Technology Center located at Iowa State University. The purpose of the program is to determine the interrelationship among noise, friction, smoothness, and texture properties of concrete pavements. This report addresses work conducted under Part 2 of the program. In Part 2, data were collected on 1,012 test sections totaling 240,000 ft., representing 395 unique pavement textures. This is the most comprehensive inventory of concrete pavement surface textures ever compiled. The inventory includes transverse and longitudinal tining, diamond grinding, various drag textures, grooving, exposed aggregate, shot peening, cold milling, and some asphalt pavements and surface treatments. A preliminary analysis of the data has revealed a number of important findings. For example, relationships between texture and noise are beginning to emerge. These are not based on nominal texture dimensions, however, since a second finding is that nominal dimensions are rarely observed to be found in place. Friction and noise are also found to have no relationship, demonstrating that quieter concrete pavements can be achieved without compromising this important characteristic.
