And because she knew they were true. She was Of a wonderful fair ness, the face a perfect oval, the eyes a deep grey, not often seen with such colouring as hers, the hair brown. She was tall, and moved with extraordinary grace; it was no wonder if her husband found nothing in all the court so beautiful to look at. Just now, as her eyes, swept with long lashes, rested upon a small figure standing on a pedestal near, a far-away look stole into them, and they became inexpressibly soft and lovely, but the next moment the dissatisfied look touched them again. 'paul, ' she said anxiously, 'tell me really, do you not care for these things?' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Paul's Sister, Vol. 3 of 3 Lucy's absence had been taken advantage of by Norma's sister, Bessie Charlton, now Lady Drummond, to come and stay with Norma. She was a young woman of frankly-expressed opinions, and, disliking Lucy, she found it so hard to be what she called pleasant, that, as far as possible, she avoided staying in the same house. The difference between her and her sister was curiously marked. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regulation and Economic Analysis: A Critique Over Two Centuries argues that long experience with the practice of regulation creates a broad anti-intervention consensus among economists. This consensus is based on comparison of real intervention to real markets rather than an ideological preconception. It is shown that economic theory can support all possible positions on intervention. Much theory is too abstract to support any policy position; many arguments about how intervention might help contain qualifications expressing doubts about whether the potential can be realized; many theories illustrate the drawbacks of intervention. The vast literature on these issues concentrates either on specific cases or polemics that exaggerate both sides of the argument. Regulation and Economic Analysis seeks to show the depth of the discontent, develop interpretations of economic theory that follow from skepticism about statism and provide selected illustrations. The discussion begins with examination of general equilibrium theory and proceeds to discuss market failure with stress on monopoly and particularly what is deemed excessive concern with predatory behavior. International trade issues, transaction costs, property rights, economic theories of government, the role of special institutions such as contracts, the defects of macroeconomic and equity arguments for regulating individual markets, environmental economics and the defects of public land management policies are examined.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Red Sister, Vol. 2 of 3: A Story of Three Days and Three Months For nearly a week Lady Joan lay on her bed in a state of semi-consciousness. During that week the little village churchyard, which had already received the poor maimed and scorched collier lads, once more swung back its lych-gate to give its six feet or so of quiet earth to John Gaskell and his father. And the country-side mourned for the two, just as they had mourned for the collier lads who were their own kith and kin. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating resource examines the day-to-day lives of early Christians—as depicted through documented accounts of the period—from the beginning of Christianity through 325 CE. Early Christianity drew its doctrine from a variety of sources—personal interpretation, Hebrew scriptures, and church council—yet the core ideology endured, even as the religion transitioned from being the object of persecution to becoming a legal institution in the Roman Empire. This book celebrates the voices that helped create and develop Christianity during that period. Voices of Early Christianity: Documents from the Origins of Christianity is a collection of excerpts from significant documents from early Christian history, organized topically, then listed chronologically within each section. The author compares textual variations among the works of the apostles, as well as key themes over time, and frames the discussion for further critical thinking. Topics include sexuality, marriage, and divorce; food issues; women in early Christianity; and politics and Christianity.
