Book excerpt: The work of Paul Sietsema (born 1968) might be described as a sequence of multimedia suites, each of which begins with a phase of intensive research into historical-political themes, and which results in a body of interrelated sculptures, photographs, drawings, collages and films that propose an "exploded" model of historical progress. In general, these suites, such as Empire (2003) and Figure 3 (2008), have been discussed and exhibited individually. This publication, by contrast, brings together major elements from projects of the past decade, along with new works, which are being facilitated by the support of a Wexner Center Artist Residency Award in visual arts. The publication, like the exhibition it accompanies, is the most comprehensive survey of Sietsema's work to date. It includes his most recent sequence, Chinese Box, done through the support of the Wexner Artist Residency Award.

Book excerpt: This monograph is the first to focus exclusively on Paul Sietsema's paintings and drawings. With depictions of objects that invoke a sense of history, Sietsema explores how images are made and circulated today. The book opens with a survey essay by Tim Griffin considering this central conundrum of time in the artist's work: "Sietsema outwits his epoch, perhaps, by outlasting it in execution, with his work becoming an article of the past sometimes before being seen, or recognized, in the present." A series of texts by Emiliano Battista and Eva Fabbris address other core themes, from "circle" and "verso" to "studio" and "hand." In the extensive plate section, fifty-three works spanning seven years are illustrated in full color. With examples from all of Sietsema's bodies of work on paper or linen, these works showcase the wide range of mark-making Sietsema not only deploys but also depicts, perpetually shifting between material registers in ink, enamel, and acrylic.

Book excerpt: Tiré du site Internet de Rite Editions: "Paul Sietsema's work in film and painting addresses the objects and systems of cultural production, tracing the circuits of proliferation and consumption that allow these objects to be taken up into history. The artist's book, At the hour of tea, has been constructed from a collection of stills from his most recent 16mm film of the same title. A filmic space is developed within the pages of the book moving through and layering the film's imagery via a system of cut portals and transparent screen-like pages. The film presents a sequence of tableaux of objects common to the desktop or study. Sietsema employs a language of clichéd "collectible" objects - Roman glass, coins, minor antiquities, and the like - to invoke the idea of a salon or space of contemplation as a parallel to the contemporary studio, and the idea of a kind of leisure-based consumptive creativity more and more shared by present day producers and consumers of culture. Drawing on the design idea of skeuomorphism common in modern computer interfaces, Sietsema fills his tableaux with now-outmoded items that still live on as mere icons of their former functions."

Book excerpt: In the mid-1980s the sprouting of new movements that had driven modern art since the nineteenth century finally went dormant, sputtering out with a last few half-hearted lels ('pattern painting', 'neo-geo', 'commodity art'). But this was not the end of art history -- far from it. In the years since, art's creative development has remained more vibrant than ever, resulting in a staggering diversity of new forms. Defining Contemporary Art responds to this unique landscape with an innovative approach to art history. Assembled and written by eight of the most prominent curators working today, all of whom have both witnessed and shaped this period, Defining Contemporary Art tells the story of the two hundred pivotal artworks of the past twenty-five years. These artworks include not only the most talked out pieces but also the quietly influential works, those which may have been overlooked at the time of their making but which went on to change the paradigm of their era. Arranged year by year, these two hundred works provide a true chronological depiction of creativity in our era, forming a mosaic in which readers may find their own patterns..

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The museum of contemporary art might be the most advanced recording device ever invented. It is a place for the storage of historical grievances and the memory of forgotten artistic experiments, social projects, or errant futures. But in late nineteenth and early twentieth-century Russia, this recording device was undertaken by artists and thinkers as a site for experimentation. Arseny Zhilyaev’s Avant-Garde Museology presents essays documenting the wildly encompassing progressivism of this period by figures such as Nikolai Fedorov, Aleksandr Rodchenko, Kazimir Malevich, Alexander Bogdanov, and others—many which are translated from the Russian for the first time. Here the urgent question is: How might the contents of the museum be reanimated so as to transcend even the social and physical limits imposed on humankind? Book excerpt: Myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) are serious, debilitating conditions that affect millions of people in the United States and around the world. ME/CFS can cause significant impairment and disability. Despite substantial efforts by researchers to better understand ME/CFS, there is no known cause or effective treatment. Diagnosing the disease remains a challenge, and patients often struggle with their illness for years before an identification is made. Some health care providers have been skeptical about the serious physiological - rather than psychological - nature of the illness. Once diagnosed, patients often complain of receiving hostility from their health care provider as well as being subjected to treatment strategies that exacerbate their symptoms. Beyond Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome proposes new diagnostic clinical criteria for ME/CFS and a new term for the illness - systemic exertion intolerance disease(SEID). According to this report, the term myalgic encephalomyelitis does not accurately describe this illness, and the term chronic fatigue syndrome can result in trivialization and stigmatization for patients afflicted with this illness. Beyond Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome stresses that SEID is a medical - not a psychiatric or psychological - illness. This report lists the major symptoms of SEID and recommends a diagnostic process. One of the report's most important conclusions is that a thorough history, physical examination, and targeted work-up are necessary and often sufficient for diagnosis. The new criteria will allow a large percentage of undiagnosed patients to receive an accurate diagnosis and appropriate care. Beyond Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome will be a valuable resource to promote the prompt diagnosis of patients with this complex, multisystem, and often devastating disorder; enhance public understanding; and provide a firm foundation for future improvements in diagnosis and treatment.

Book excerpt: This book accompanies the latest bi-annual invitational exhibition organized by the Hammer Museum, which showcases the work of several Los Angeles-based artists, both established and emerging, as well as a number of artists from around the world. This catalogue to the 2011 exhibition highlights the work of fourteen contemporary artists across a wide range of media, including painting, sculpture, drawing, installation, performance art, moving image, and sound. Chosen for their interest in examining the nature of being and our experiential relationship to the world as well as their desire to make the process of artistic production visible to the viewer, this group of artists includes Karla Black, Charles Gaines, Evan Holloway, Sergej Jensen, Ian Kiaer, Jorge Macchi, Dianna Molzan, Fernando Ortega, Eileen Quinlan, Gedi Sibony, Paul Sietsema, Frances Stark, Mateo Tannatt, and Kerry Tribe. Their work explores the transient nature of materials, the limitations of structures and systems, and connections to music, sound, literature, mathematics, and time. This volume includes essays by the artist Charles Long and by Anne Ellegood and Douglas Fogle, the exhibition's curators, as well as a section of color plates and a brief text and biographical information for each artist, making this an exciting reflection on the nature of art-making today.

Book excerpt: Just one of a series of volumes on differing aspects of hypoxia, this authoritative text focuses on cutting-edge research at the interface of hypoxia and biomedicine. Hypoxia – or lack of oxygen – is a constant threat to the human body and its vital organs, one that can take its toll in a number of situations. There are many situations in which the threat is heightened in health and disease, but mechanisms have evolved to lessen its detrimental effects. The International Hypoxia Symposia was founded to enable scientists, clinicians, physiologists, immunologists, mountaineers and other interested individuals to share their experiences of the situations associated with the lack of oxygen and the adaptations that allow us to survive.
