Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only thing constant in life is change. In the journey through dynamic life, major changes and dislocations happened early as well as later in life. The events created by these tribulations were connected with people and places that shaped up future life and destiny. These events themselves were influenced by historical and scientific developments in society over time. When the dynamic life entered its last cycle, the balance sheet was loaded with dejections and regrets outweighing the successes and achievements. That was the time when life in transition stopped, life itself moved on. The book is a mix of a real-life story, historical connections and concoctions to make it a lively reading.

Book excerpt: “Spine chilling … written with flair and clear-eyed acidity.” — The New Yorker Based on actual events, The Story of My Assassins tells the story of a journalist who learns that the police have captured five hitmen on their way to kill him. Landing like a bombshell on his comfortable life, just as he’s started a steamy affair with a brilliant woman, the news prompts him to launch an urgent investigation into the lives of his aspiring murderers—a ragtag group of street thugs and village waifs—and their mastermind. Who wanted him dead, and why? But the investigation forces him to reexamine his own life, too—to confront his own notion of himself, his job, and his treatment of the women in his life, as well as his own complex feelings about the country that crafted his would-be killers. Part thriller and part erotic romance, full of dark humor and knife-edged suspense, The Story of My Assassins is a piercing literary novel that takes us from the lavish, hedonistic palaces of India’s elite to its seediest slums. It is a novel of corruption, passion, power, and ambition; of extreme poverty and obscene wealth. It is an awesome adventure into the heart of today’s India.

Book excerpt: Meet the members of the Sunset Club: Pandit Preetam Sharma; Nawab Barkatullah Baig and Sardar Boota Singh. Friends for over forty years; they are now in their eighties. And every evening; at the sunset hour; they sit together on a bench in Lodhi Gardens to exchange news and views on the events of the day; talking about everything from love; lust; sex and scandal to religion and politics. As he follows a year in the lives of the three men—from January 26 2009 to January 26 2010—Khushwant Singh brings his characters vibrantly to life; with his piquant portrayals of their fantasies and foibles; his unerring ear for dialogue and his genius for capturing the flavour and texture of everyday life in their households. Interwoven with this compelling human story is another chronicle – of a year in the life of India; as the country goes through the cycle of seasons; the tumult of general elections; violence; natural disasters and corruption in high places. In turn ribald and lyrical; poignant and profound; The Sunset Club is a deeply moving exploration of friendship; sexuality; old age and infirmity; a joyous celebration of nature; an insightful portrait of India’s paradoxes and complexities. A masterpiece from one of India’s most-loved storytellers; The Sunset Club will have you in tears and laughter; and grip you from the first page to the last.

Book excerpt: The essential Khushwant Singh collection. In an essay in this anthology, Khushwant Singh claims that he is not a nice man to know. Whatever the truth of that assertion, there is little question about his skill as a witty, eloquent and entertaining writer. This book collects the best of over three decades of the author’s prose—including his finest journalistic pieces, short stories, translations, jokes, plays as well as excerpts from his non-fiction books and novels. Taken together, the pieces in this selection (some of which have never been published before) show just why Khushwant Singh is the country’s most widely read columnist and one of its most celebrated authors.

Book excerpt: 'It was not an easy world to live in, particularly if you belonged.' Patiala in the early 1980s. A town caught in a time warp, yoked to its princely past even as it grapples with the looming spectre of terrorism which plays havoc with Punjab through that decade. As terror and suspicion lurk everywhere, the protagonists - siblings Monty and Minnie, and Michael and Karuna - play out their respective destinies, evolving their own strategies to cope with the tumult of the times. While Michael briefly seeks nirvana in his motorbike before deciding he has had enough and Monty withdraws into silence, it is the women - demure Karuna, shocking her family with its first scandal, and wilful Minnie, determined not to be a 'nice girl' - who display the resilience to overcome the inertia spawned by fear and generations of conditioning. In this fascinating first novel, Neel Kamal Puri crafts a heartbreaking tale of people for whom life is often a dead end. and often hilarious look at growing up: the pain, the heartaches, the choices we make, and how they make for the difference between survival and death, between holding on and letting go.

Book excerpt: The story of this novel revolves around the main protagonist named Jiang Rudd of Indian Citizenship. Although, Jiang's parentage is of American Chinese origin, but he is a contemporary Indian of the 22nd Century. Jiang is a man of extra-ordinary character and noticeable qualities and these noticeable qualities get him into very unusual situations, which he handles in his own unique styles. Story in the novel reveals life and activities of Jiang. Therefore, as we move on to read the novel, the story would uncover Jiang's adventure, mis-adventure, love, sex, faithfulness, betrayal, passion, skills, concocted ambition (yes it's concocted) and knowledge. The story is based on the future, where you can see future in bits and pieces. Jiang would be the cynosure of this novel, but this novel fleetingly deals with India's hypothetical future (obviously, it's the picture of writer's free floating thought process & hallucination). To tell things in brief, a future, which is prosperous for few and for the rest, it is still challenging, in-fact quite miserable. Though it is out of my wild imagination, but even in the wilderness, it is invoking us what we may do and what we may avoid to do in coming years to take India to the position where it actually deserves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a typical village somewhere in the Deccan, justice arrives in a different form... A middle-aged Dalit mid-wife, Ramulamma goes about her day performing her services as a dai, looking for odd jobs in surrounding villages and occasionally in the city, and countering constant ill-treatmeant from the local Inspector Sahib. But there’s more to Ramulamma than her torn sari and the gold stud twinkling on her nose reveal. Through her wisdom and canny intuition, she finds her way around the most intractable problems with the deftest touch. She brings to book a powerful landlord for the rape and murder of a young Dalit girl, saves a falsely accused thief from a miserable fate, and demonstrates to abusive policemen (and occasionally her high-born patrons) in her signature, subtle style the real meaning of duty. With delicate wit and never-failing empathy, the twelve stories in this delightful collection expose the hypocrisies of our sharply divided society and celebrate the self-empowerment of its oppressed.
