Book Synopsis Person Schemas and Maladaptive Interpersonal Patterns by : Mardi Jon Horowitz
Download or read book Person Schemas and Maladaptive Interpersonal Patterns written by Mardi Jon Horowitz and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fresh exploration of the utility of person schemas for understanding interpersonal behavior and intrapsychic conflict brings together psychoanalytic researchers, social learning theorists, and cognitive scientists. The contributors show that a fuller conceptualization of person schemas can begin to close the gap between psychodynamic and cognitive science research, providing new methods for understanding disorders of personality. There are many strengths in this volume beyond the clear presentation of the person schema as a concept linking cognitive and psychodynamic perspectives. . . . Students will have an opportunity for comparison of perspectives while those working in the field will have an opportunity to follow the shift from concept to method to case application to theoretical context for understanding personality change. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Identify Recurring Patterns to Grow Beyond What Is Holding You Back from Success and Fulfillment! Your most powerful work is overcoming the mistakes, flaws, and wounds you have internalized throughout your life. Are you ready to harness that? Recurring themes of conflict, cognition, addiction, time allocation, and situational responses become patterns that affect your decisions, both positively and negatively. Once you are aware of these recurring patterns, you can use them to place emphasis on the positive impact and minimize the negative. Understanding these patterns is step one to becoming a healthier version of yourself. Do you believe that you can change patterns in how you think and relate to others to have a more fulfilling life? You can. In 2002, Matt Norman suffered from debilitating panic attacks that sidelined him from business meetings, making it difficult for him to interact with others. Once he learned to recognize the patterns that were causing his anxiety, Matt was able to overcome it. Now, he is a leader in the industry that mentors others on how to do the same. You have a choice. You can stay stuck in the same recurring patterns or you can identify and confront those patterns in an effort to grow. Your brain will remind you of trauma and past experiences to keep you in the same pattern of survival, "Be careful, you got hurt last time!" It makes you resist change because it might be risky! As a result, you remain in fixed patterns that can limit productivity and be downright debilitating. This is the brain's natural reaction, but that does not mean you have to be locked into this limiting behavior. You can create new connections in your brain that encourage new thoughts and actions. Don't you think it's time for you to grow and lead a more fulfilling life? You're the reason Matt wrote this book. His passion is to show you how to recognize recurring negative patterns that are holding you back and help you embrace the growth that will carry you to new heights! Matt Norman is President & CEO of Norman & Associates. Through Norman & Associates, he helps people think and work together more effectively. Matt's coaching has helped Fortune 100 corporations, non-profits, and entrepreneurs change the way they engage with their employees and clients. Book Synopsis The Pattern Seekers by : Simon Baron-Cohen
Download or read book The Pattern Seekers written by Simon Baron-Cohen and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2020-11-10 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking argument about the link between autism and ingenuity. Why can humans alone invent? In The Pattern Seekers, Cambridge University psychologist Simon Baron-Cohen makes a case that autism is as crucial to our creative and cultural history as the mastery of fire. Indeed, Baron-Cohen argues that autistic people have played a key role in human progress for seventy thousand years, from the first tools to the digital revolution. How? Because the same genes that cause autism enable the pattern seeking that is essential to our species's inventiveness. However, these abilities exact a great cost on autistic people, including social and often medical challenges, so Baron-Cohen calls on us to support and celebrate autistic people in both their disabilities and their triumphs. Ultimately, The Pattern Seekers isn't just a new theory of human civilization, but a call to consider anew how society treats those who think differently.

Why should a woman hope it was a man who witnessed her bag being snatched? And what possessed Burt Reynolds to punch a guy with no legs? Human beings can be stubbornly irrational and wilfully blind ... but at least we're predictably wrong. Hallinan explains the everyday mistakes that shape our lives, and what we can do to prevent them happening.
Download or read book Social Chemistry written by Marissa King and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2021-01-05 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of 2021's Most Highly Anticipated New Books—Newsweek One of The 20 Leadership Books to Read in 2020—Adam Grant One of The Best New Wellness Books Hitting Shelves in January 2021—Shape.com A Top Business Book for January 2021—Financial Times A Next Big Idea Club Nominee Social Chemistry will utterly transform the way you think about “networking.” Understanding the contours of your social network can dramatically enhance personal relationships, work life, and even your global impact. Are you an Expansionist, a Broker, or a Convener? The answer matters more than you think. . . . Yale professor Marissa King shows how anyone can build more meaningful and productive relationships based on insights from neuroscience, psychology, and network analytics. Conventional wisdom says it's the size of your network that matters, but social science research has proven there is more to it. King explains that the quality and structure of our relationships has the greatest impact on our personal and professional lives. As she shows, there are three basic types of networks, so readers can see the role they are already playing: Expansionist, Broker, or Convener. This network decoder enables readers to own their network style and modify it for better alignment with their life plans and values. High-quality connections in your social network strongly predict cognitive functioning, emotional resilience, and satisfaction at work. A well-structured network is likely to boost the quality of your ideas, as well as your pay. Beyond the office, social connections are the lifeblood of our health and happiness. The compiled results from dozens of previous studies found that our social relationships have an effect on our likelihood of dying prematurely—equivalent to obesity or smoking. Rich stories of Expansionists like Vernon Jordan, Brokers like Yo-Yo Ma, and Conveners like Anna Wintour, as well as personal experiences from King's own world of connections, inform this warm, engaging, revelatory investigation into some of the most consequential decisions we can make about the trajectory of our lives.

Book Synopsis Patterns in Interpersonal Interactions by : Karl Tomm
Download or read book Patterns in Interpersonal Interactions written by Karl Tomm and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-16 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book we present a comprehensive view of a systemic approach to working with families, initiated by Karl Tomm more than two decades ago at the Calgary Family Therapy Centre in Canada. The contributors of this edited book articulate the IPscope framework as it was originally designed and its evolution over time. We invite you, experienced professionals and new family therapists, to join with us to explore some of the mysteries of human relationships. While the focus on our explorations revolves around clinical mental health problems and initiatives towards solutions, the concepts are applicable in many domains of daily life. They highlight the ways in which we, as persons, invite each other into recurrent patterns of interaction that generate and maintain some stability in our continuously changing relationships. The stabilities arise when our invitations become coupled and can be characterized as mutual; yet, they always remain transient. What is of major significance is that these transient relational stabilities can have major positive or negative effects in our lives. Consequently, we could all potentially benefit from greater awareness of the nature of these patterns, how particular patterns arise, and how we might be able to influence them.
Book Synopsis A Pattern Language by : Christopher Alexander
Download or read book A Pattern Language written by Christopher Alexander and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-20 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You can use this book to design a house for yourself with your family; you can use it to work with your neighbors to improve your town and neighborhood; you can use it to design an office, or a workshop, or a public building. And you can use it to guide you in the actual process of construction. After a ten-year silence, Christopher Alexander and his colleagues at the Center for Environmental Structure are now publishing a major statement in the form of three books which will, in their words, "lay the basis for an entirely new approach to architecture, building and planning, which will we hope replace existing ideas and practices entirely." The three books are The Timeless Way of Building, The Oregon Experiment, and this book, A Pattern Language. At the core of these books is the idea that people should design for themselves their own houses, streets, and communities. This idea may be radical (it implies a radical transformation of the architectural profession) but it comes simply from the observation that most of the wonderful places of the world were not made by architects but by the people. At the core of the books, too, is the point that in designing their environments people always rely on certain "languages," which, like the languages we speak, allow them to articulate and communicate an infinite variety of designs within a forma system which gives them coherence. This book provides a language of this kind. It will enable a person to make a design for almost any kind of building, or any part of the built environment. "Patterns," the units of this language, are answers to design problems (How high should a window sill be? How many stories should a building have? How much space in a neighborhood should be devoted to grass and trees?). More than 250 of the patterns in this pattern language are given: each consists of a problem statement, a discussion of the problem with an illustration, and a solution. As the authors say in their introduction, many of the patterns are archetypal, so deeply rooted in the nature of things that it seemly likely that they will be a part of human nature, and human action, as much in five hundred years as they are today.
