Book excerpt: Macroinvertebrates constitute the backbone of megafaunal communities in benthic ecosystems around the globe. Many macroinvertebrates have vital roles in benthic ecosystems, ranging from enhancing habitat complexity to providing staple food sources for other organisms. Regardless of how familiar macroinvertebrates are to the general public, very few studies have attempted to describe benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages across large spatial scale in the continental shelf waters of the Pacific Northwest. This study describes different subtidal macroinvertebrate assemblages off Washington and Oregon based on species-substrata associations and the key species that distinguish one assemblage from another. Two data sets were used for this study: underwater footage collected by the submersible Delta during 1993-1995 geological surveys, and footage collected by the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Hammerhead during macroinvertebrate surveys in late summer 2011. Footages from these surveys were used to document species-substrata associations and distinguish different assemblages based on species composition similarities and dissimilarities. In addition, I determined if a specific group of invertebrates, Asteroids (Echinodermata), were useful in explaining different assemblage patterns, after all other environmental parameters were taken into account. Findings of this study can be used not only to shed light on the structure of macroinvertebrate communities in the Pacific Northwest, but also as baseline data for future research on the direct and indirect effects of potential offshore installations on macroinvertebrate communities across the continental shelf waters.

Book excerpt: "Classifications of the marine environment are essential to inform marine spatial planning strategies such as protected area designation, and can support assessments of the cumulative impacts of human activities and the development of species-habitat associations. The benthic habitat template developed here for the shelf waters (30 - 500 m) of Canada's Pacific coast is one such classification. The template differs from more common correlation-based approaches in that it uses hypotheses grounded in functional ecology to integrate physical data into a functional description of the benthic environment. We adapted methods originally used on Canada's Atlantic coast to the available data and unique characteristics of Canada's Pacific coast. We found the habitat template correlated better with benthic diversity than linear geographic distance, corroborating earlier findings from Atlantic Canada. The habitat template, particularly the Disturbance axis, was negatively correlated with the Shannon-Weiner biodiversity index, showing that high disturbance habitats are less diverse. These results demonstrate that the template, by considering the influence of physical drivers on functional adaptation in the classification process, represents an ecologically relevant classification of the marine environment. As such, it has the potential to contribute to Canada's Marine Protected Area strategy by identifying areas of rarity, high diversity, and representativity, important determinants of Ecologically or Biologically Significant Areas (EBSAs). Also, the ability to correlate species diversity with distance provides a way to quantitatively identify ecologically significant regional boundaries, something that is critical to understanding the ecology on the coast, and a potentially important refinement to questions of representativity. We expect both the habitat template and the associated sediment grain size model to serve key roles for marine spatial planning on Canada's Pacific Coast."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: Southern Green Bay, Lake Michigan is one of the most productive ecosystems in the Great Lakes and has historically been subjected to a wide range of stressors, yet little is known about the current macroinvertebrate community structure. The most recent comprehensive assessment of benthic fauna was by Markert (1982) in 1978. The objectives of this project were to describe the current macroinvertebrate community, examine changes since 1978, and identify major environmental drivers of benthic community compositions. In total, 258 stations were surveyed, including 97 that were also sampled in 1978, 100 that were added to increase spatial resolution, and 61 that were subjected to periodic hypoxia. I collected 95 macroinvertebrate taxa in southern Green Bay with the community dominated by the eurytopic midge Chironomus and immature tubificid worms. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) ordination and indicator analyses distinguished contemporary and historical communities and revealed shifts in benthic macroinvertebrate structure; although oligochaete worms and chironomids remained dominant over time, Chironomus abundance increased and characterized the contemporary community, whereas the benthos were historically more diverse. The magnitude of temporal change varied regionally with larger differences concentrated in southern middle bay and the inner bay remaining comparable to 1978. Contemporary assemblages are driven primarily by productivity, substrate type, and hypoxia, according to NMDS ordinations. Regular benthic monitoring should continue to evaluate biological responses to environmental stressors and assess management actions.

Book excerpt: This book is an unpretentious editing venture to fill the gap in our current knowledge on the ecological implications caused by anthropogenic disturbances upon benthic communities in several regions of the world, including the Western Atlantic, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Eastern Pacific Ocean, as well as the pristine environments of the Andes in South America. The common goal of the contributing authors in this book was to unravel the complex processes that make possible the life existence of bottom-living animals in different environmental scenarios. To achieve such a goal, the authors focus their attention on the emerging issues inherent to global climate change or the pollution of aquatic systems. These are all themes that might be of interest to scientists active in a wide range of oceanographic subdisciplines. Well-established researchers would appreciate the innovative approach adopted in each chapter of the book, which extends from the ecosystem level to refined molecular interpretations.

Book excerpt: The overall view presented by this study is of closely interrelated Bering/Chukchi benthic community system that extends unbroken over the entire continental shelf, with the Chukchi Sea benthos probably relying heavily on the Bering Sea for both food supply and possibly recruitment. Indications are that this is a highly productive and relatively stable benthic system comprised of at least eight major faunal zones of considerable complexity. The environmental factor correlating most strongly with the distribution of these faunal zones and with distribution of individual major species appears to be sediment type, though summer bottom temperature may also be critical. The distribution of standing stock biomass in relation to diversity suggests predation pressure on the southern and northern extremes of the study area, presumably the result of benthic-feeding marine mammal populations and possibly, in the case of the southern region, demersal fish. In general terms it appears to be a strongly detrital-based trophic system, with an elevated standing stock biomass observed in the Bering Strait and southern Chukchi Sea region, probably the combined result of high near-surface primary productivity distributions and current structure. The benthic fauna over this region appears to be dominated by boreal Pacific forms, probably also a result of the current structure, with high Arctic forms frequent only in the northern waters.

The Pacific Arctic, which includes the northern Bering and southern Chukchi Sea continental shelves, is undergoing warming temperatures, reductions in sea ice, and changes to the marine ecosystem. Fieldwork was conducted across the northern Bering and southern Chukchi Sea continental shelves in June 2017 and June 2018 on the R/V Sikuliaq. The overall objective of this dissertation was to characterize benthic community structure, function, and carbon demand in the Pacific Arctic to serve as baselines for assessing impacts of environmental change. Spatial patterns of macrofauna and meiofauna were characterized, including abundances, biomass, composition, and vertical distribution within the sediment. Polychaete structure and function were assessed in detail by identifying polychaetes to family level and assigning each a functional guild based on feeding mode, motility, and feeding structures. Nematodes were identified to genus level and characterized by feeding type and life-history strategy. Clusters of polychaete functional guilds and nematode genera assemblages were similar and occupied different general regions within the Pacific Arctic: northern Bering Sea, Bering Strait, offshore Chukchi Sea, and coastal Chukchi Sea. These polychaete and nematode assemblages were associated with different depositional and food environments, characterized by grain size and the amount and quality of sediment organic matter. In addition, metabolic and carbon demand of dominant macrofaunal were estimated based on oxygen consumption rates. Species-specific rates suggest that shifts in macrofaunal community composition in the region will impact benthic carbon demand. Overall, the research presented here provides critical baseline data for benthic community structure, function, and carbon demand in the Pacific Arctic and can be used to evaluate change and constrain region-specific ecosystem models, especially in the context of a rapidly changing environment.
