The book also addresses the theoretical significance of PDIS for artificial intelligence and cognitive psychology. The book is divided into eight sections. The introduction provides a brief overview of pattern-directed inference systems, including a historical perspective, a review of basic concepts, and a survey of work in this area. Subsequent chapters address topics on architecture and design, methods for accessing and controlling rule based systems, methods for obtaining adaptive behavior via rule-based systems and cognitive modeling. Constructing models of human information processing, natural language understanding and multilevel systems and complexity are described as well. The last section discusses the earlier chapters in the book and provides a unifying set of principles for the PDIS formalism. Computer scientists, psychologists, engineers, and researchers in artificial intelligence will find the book very informative.

Book Synopsis An Artificial Intelligence Approach to VLSI Routing by : R. Joobbani
Download or read book An Artificial Intelligence Approach to VLSI Routing written by R. Joobbani and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Routing of VLSI chips is an important, time consuming, and difficult problem. The difficulty of the problem is attributed to the large number of often conflicting factors that affect the routing quality. Traditional techniques have approached routing by ignoring some of these factors and imposing unnecessary constraints in order to make routing tractable. In addition to the imposition of these restrictions, which simplify the problems to a degree but at the same time reduce the routing quality, traditional approaches use brute force. They often transform the problem into mathematical or graph problems and completely ignore the specific knowledge about the routing task that can greatly help the solution. This thesis overcomes some of the above problems and presents a system that performs routing close to what human designers do. In other words it heavily capitalizes on the knowledge of human expertise in this area, it does not impose unnecessary constraints, it considers all the different factors that affect the routing quality, and most importantly it allows constant user interaction throughout the routing process. To achieve the above, this thesis presents background about some representative techniques for routing and summarizes their characteristics. It then studies in detail the different factors (such as minimum area, number of vias, wire length, etc.) that affect the routing quality, and the different criteria (such as vertical/horizontal constraint graph, merging, minimal rectilinear Steiner tree, etc.) that can be used to optimize these factors.

Download or read book Machine Learning written by R.S. Michalski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to learn is one of the most fundamental attributes of intelligent behavior. Consequently, progress in the theory and computer modeling of learn ing processes is of great significance to fields concerned with understanding in telligence. Such fields include cognitive science, artificial intelligence, infor mation science, pattern recognition, psychology, education, epistemology, philosophy, and related disciplines. The recent observance of the silver anniversary of artificial intelligence has been heralded by a surge of interest in machine learning-both in building models of human learning and in understanding how machines might be endowed with the ability to learn. This renewed interest has spawned many new research projects and resulted in an increase in related scientific activities. In the summer of 1980, the First Machine Learning Workshop was held at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh. In the same year, three consecutive issues of the Inter national Journal of Policy Analysis and Information Systems were specially devoted to machine learning (No. 2, 3 and 4, 1980). In the spring of 1981, a special issue of the SIGART Newsletter No. 76 reviewed current research projects in the field. . This book contains tutorial overviews and research papers representative of contemporary trends in the area of machine learning as viewed from an artificial intelligence perspective. As the first available text on this subject, it is intended to fulfill several needs.

Book Synopsis Advances in Information Systems Science by : Julius T. Tou
Download or read book Advances in Information Systems Science written by Julius T. Tou and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 9 of this series on information systems science presents four timely topics of current interest in this growing field. In each chapter an attempt is made to familiarize the reader with some basic background information on the advances discussed, so that this volume may be used independently or in conjunction with the previous volumes. The emphasis in this volume is on data structures for scene analysis, database management technology, inductive inference in processing pattern-based information, and logic design of MOS networks. Scene analysis has become a very important aspect in information system design. The process of scene analysis involves sensing, segmentation, recognition, and interpretation. Innovative development of algorithms for these tasks requires the utilization of structural relationship prevalent within the sensed data. In Chapter 1, Thomason and Gonzalez discuss the formula tion of data representation techniques and the properties of data structures and databases in scene analysis. In view of the growing importance of database management, Chapter 2 is devoted to an overview of database management technology. In this chapter Kobayashi covers a variety of current topics. The topics discussed include system design methodology, data structure theory, semantic con siderations, calculus-based database operations, database management functions, and the issues of integrity, security, concurrency, and recoverabil ity. This chapter also discusses the end-user languages and several existing database management systems.

Book Synopsis Knowledge Structures by : Dietrich Albert
Download or read book Knowledge Structures written by Dietrich Albert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a sign of its times. Each one of the chapters - papers written by European authors of various backgrounds- illustrates a departure from the style of theorizing that has been prominent in the behavioral and social sciences for most of the century. Until very recently, models for behavioral phenomena were chi~fly based on numerical representations of the objects of concern, e. g. the subjects and the stimuli under study. This was due in large part to the influence of nineteenth century physics, which played the role of the successful older sister, the one that had to be imitated if one wished to be taken seriously in scientific circles. The mystical belief that there could be science only when the objects of concern were susceptible of measurement in the sense of physics was a credo that could not be violated without risks. Another, more honor able justification was that the numerical models were the only ones capable of feasible calculations. (In fact, these models were typically linear. ) An early example of such theorizing in psychology is factor analysis, which attempted to represent the results of mental tests in a real vector space of small dimen sionality, each subject being represented by a point in that space. A dimension Wa£ interpreted as a scale measuring some mental ability. The analysis was simple, and only required an electrical desk calculator (with spinning wheels), and a suitable amount of determination.
Book Synopsis Readings in Machine Learning by : Jude W. Shavlik
Download or read book Readings in Machine Learning written by Jude W. Shavlik and published by Morgan Kaufmann. This book was released on 1990 with total page 868 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to learn is a fundamental characteristic of intelligent behavior. The editors, in cooperation with a group of expert referees, have chosen important papers that empirically study, theoretically analyze, or psychologically justify machine learning algorithms. The papers are grouped into a dozen categories, each of which is introduced by the editors.
Book Synopsis Agent-Oriented Programming by : Matthew M. Huntbach
Download or read book Agent-Oriented Programming written by Matthew M. Huntbach and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-07-31 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A book that furnishes no quotations is, me judice, no book – it is a plaything. TL Peacock: Crochet Castle The paradigm presented in this book is proposed as an agent programming language. The book charts the evolution of the language from Prolog to intelligent agents. To a large extent, intelligent agents rose to prominence in the mid-1990s because of the World Wide Web and an ill-structured network of multimedia information. Age- oriented programming was a natural progression from object-oriented programming which C++ and more recently Java popularized. Another strand of influence came from a revival of interest in robotics [Brooks, 1991a; 1991b]. The quintessence of an agent is an intelligent, willing slave. Speculation in the area of artificial slaves is far more ancient than twentieth century science fiction. One documented example is found in Aristotle’s Politics written in the fourth century BC. Aristotle classifies the slave as “an animate article of property”. He suggests that slaves or subordinates might not be necessary if “each instrument could do its own work at command or by anticipation like the statues of Daedalus and the tripods of Hephaestus”. Reference to the legendary robots devised by these mythological technocrats, the former an artificer who made wings for Icarus and the latter a blacksmith god, testify that the concept of robot, if not the name, was ancient even in Aristotle’s time.
