Book excerpt: Excerpt from Patriotism and National Defence The dreams of the New England colonists along the Connecticut valley were never darker than when the startled sleepers awoke with the war-whoop of the french-indian raids; but the story would have been sadder now, if the piety and good sense, of the Puritans had not alike taught them that their duty and their safety was to fight. Such wars and fightings came not of their lusts, but of their manhood. This, in a nutshell, contains the solution of all doubtful disputations on the peace question. Nothing that I shall say can diminish the ardor with which we most devoutly pray: Lord, send peace in our time. With this introduction I propose to discuss, in a prac tical manner, certain points that are worthy of general consideration. Wars have always occurred with a ten deney to periodicity - enough so, at all events, to require no prophet to tell us that they will probably occur again enough so to show that we cannot yet beat our swords into ploughshares, nor neglect the duties of preparation, both of material resources and of the virtues of courage to use them promptly and successfully. Where it is a great Battle for Peace, to be fought with pen and voice, the ammunition needed is facts. Whenever the people of the United States know the facts relating to the subject to which this book is devoted, then what it advocates will be done. Much fault has been found with Congress because of the country's unpreparedness. Congress is not at fault. "The stream cannot rise higher than the fountain." The will of the people is the law. The people of this nation are unalterably opposed to a big Standing Army. When they know that the safety of the nation can be assured without either the cost or the menace of militarism, the people will demand that it be done, and Congress will register that popular decree, gladly and willingly. It is not at all surprising that Congress does not yield to the clamor of the militarists when they know the adverse sentiment of the people on that subject. President Schurman of Cornell recently said: "It would be self-deception of the grossest character if Americans made their love of peace the criterion of the military policy and preparedness of their country. It would be madness to enfeeble and imperil the United States because we believe peace the chief blessing of the nations." All that is true. Perhaps we needed the infernal crimes and horrors of Armageddon to remind us that they are, and that neither dynasts nor diplomats, neither the theories of Utopian materialism nor the sweet appeal of pure reason, can make them otherwise. The war does at least prove to us that the greatest things are not intellectual, that men are moved by other forces more spiritual, more noble, and more true. The whole world shouts it half the world is at war to proclaim it; and it may be that already a million men have died to prove the reality of an abstraction Civilization has not pushed out of it, as from some outworn barbarism, but it has grown with civilization. The national principle, indeed, was not established in Europe until the nineteenth century. We may be annoyed by the things that Hackel has said about England, but at least he has proved that he is not a rationalist. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Patriotism, the Safe Guard of the Nation A Paper read before the Kansas Commandery of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, March 7, 1894, by Companion Major O. B. Gunn. Patriotism is defined as the love of one's country, and a patriot is one who zealously supports and defends it. To be loyal to ones country is to be devoted to the maintenance of law, to be ready to uphold the constitutional authority, to be faithful to the lawful government, and to be ready to take up arms in its defense when it is assailed by its enemies. The germ of Patriotism is born in the cradle, and is developed in the home. Its first development is in the love and loyalty between the mother and the young child; then comes the loyalty of the members of the family one towards another, and all towards their home, which all stand ready to defend. With the lessons of obedience, love and integrity taught in the home come a high and pure type of loyalty. Next comes the loyalty to one's own city or county and its environments. With a larger growth comes the loyalty to one's native or adopted State; still later, with a broader understanding of affairs, comes loyalty to the Nation, and as all local growth and prosperity depends upon the growth and prosperity of the Nation, so all loyalty finds its highest type in the love of the nation and obedience to its Constitution and laws, which is summed up in the word "Patriotism." It is written that, "A man shall leave his father and mother and cleave unto his wife." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tribute Book: A Record of the Munificence, Self-Sacrifice and Patriotism of the American People, During the War for the Union This stated, there is little else requiring notice in these preliminary pages. A grateful duty remains to the compiler - for compilation and annotation have been his principal labors - that of acknowledging the assistance received, without which not one page could have been prepared, nor one fact obtained. A book like this has not been produced without the asking of innumerable questions; and those to whom they have been addressed, have, in no case, let them pass unheeded, though they had often, doubtless, many more pressing things to do than answering them. To the corresponding secretaries of the Various associations whose labors are here recorded, the thanks of the publishers are due, and are hereby cordially offered. To the presidents of the several commissions, to the superintendents of soldiers' homes and asylums, to the treasurers of bounty and defence funds, to all who have afforded aid, the publishers gratefully confess their indebtedness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Why "America First"?: The Basis of Our Patriotism If there has been a departure from this principle on the part of the government, is it because the citizen has lost his sense of individual dignity, lost his grasp on his relations and responsibility to the government? Can it be that the original American idea has been modified with time by in uences that are alien, nay, hostile to the fundamental principles of American institutions? This is our government, our country, and when there is a question of preference, when it is America or some other country, it is and must be America first. We are the last to call in question the hearty love and veneration that another may have for his native land. We know that it is natural and entitled to respect. Moreover, we have always respected it. We have a right to expect, however, nay, we demand that native sons, as also men who have sworn allegiance to the United States, never forget for a moment that this Republic, on questions in volving peace and war, commands absolute subordination of any and all political interests to the interests of the United States. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Field, Gunboat, Hospital, and Prison: Or, Thrilling Records of the Heroism, Endurance, and Patriotism; Displayed in the Union Army and Navy During the Great Rebellion In the days of chivalry, when troubadours sang in ladies' bowers, the heroic deeds of brave and gallant knights were often the theme of the minstrel's ballad; and earlier yet, in the classic eras, the exploits of mighty warriors were told in song and story. Even the sacred writings show that this was customary in the childhood of the world; and the triumphal song of Deborah, the majestic utterances of the prophets, and the unsurpassed poetry of the monarch-bard, are evidences that bravery, heroism, fortitude, and the mighty arm of God displayed in the hour of military triumph, were deemed the legitimate and worthy themes of the poet and historian. The same idea prevails in our own day, while we have almost infinitely greater facilities for making world-wide the name and fame of our gallant heroes. The printing-press, like a thousand-tongued troubadour, sings the praise not only of the men who fought at Thermopylae and Waterloo, at Lexington and Bunker Hill, but sings also, and with clarion notes, of the champions of liberty, no less brave and patriotic, who battled for the right upon the sanguinary fields of Bull Run, Ball's Bluff, Antietarn, Gettysburg, Pittsburg Landing, Shiloh, and many another field of blood and glory, as well as on the decks of our monitors and gunboats, which have thundered at doors which opened wide only at their summons. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bugle Calls of Liberty: Our National Reader of Patriotism Throughout our history the greatest waves of patriotism have been awakened and inspired by the speeches of those who, thrilled with the spirit of a great cause, have sounded a note which roused the country to action. It was President Wilson's message to Congress in April, 1917, that sounded the call that roused America to service, sacrifice and battle, just as Patrick Henry's speech in 1775 roused the Virginians. This book gives some of the great speeches which have either inspired our fore-fathers or have inspired us to use the vast resources of our country for the causes of liberty, freedom, justice or World Democracy. It gives these speeches in the order of their occurrence, and by way of introduction tells enough of the story of the times so that one may understand the full significance of each of these great masterpieces. The historical setting and the speeches together present a very important part of the history of our country in a most impressive way. The reading of this book cannot fail to make better American citizens - imbued with a still more patriotic spirit and with a much greater reverence for our flag.
