These include schools and universities, citizens' associations, public opinion, economic corporations, non-governmental organizations, learned societies, unions, media, international agencies, clubs, consultants etc. In fact, the reader is going to meet quite a few of these actors in this publication; they are the unavoidable characters involved in the story the authors have set out to tell.

These 21 papers are a key selection of the papers presented there, with an introduction by the distinguished historian Bahru Zewde. The papers explore and analyse the issue of identity in its diverse temporal settings, from its pre-colonial roots to its cotemporary manifestations. He was formerly Chairperson of the Department of History and Director of the Institute of Ethiopian Studies at Addis Ababa University. Le « musée virtuel » en vient à rejoindre le « musée conservateur ». La numérisation du patrimoine modifie-t-elle l’institution ? Le musée conservateur des siècles passés privilégie aujourd’hui la fréquentation du public et la diversification des modes de financement pour accroître ses moyens. Le musée virtuel en devient une extension, mais aussi parfois un concurrent. Dès lors que la mission de service public est confrontée au marché, la relation de l’institution à son patrimoine s’en trouve affectée. Autrement dit, la capacité à transmettre un héritage culturel aux futures générations s’inscrit désormais au cœur des débats sur l’avenir des musées.

It starts from a broad conception of cultural heritage that encompasses both tangible property, such as museum objects or buildings, and intangible heritage, such as languages and traditions. Cultural heritage thus defined is protected by various legal regimes, including the law of armed conflicts, UNESCO Conventions and international criminal law. With a view to strengthening international protection, the authors analyze existing regimes and elaborate innovative concepts, such as blue helmets of culture and safe havens for endangered cultural heritage. Finally, the ends of international protection come to the fore, and the authors address possible conflicts between protecting cultural diversity and wishes to strengthen cultural identity.
