Book excerpt: The quiet moments of global terrorism are over. They were silently on the move and highly motivated against the USA, first and foremost. To the radical extremist fascists' international terrorists' network, the USA was the easiest to infiltrate amongst the world's super powers. Their ultimate target was the entertainment capital of the world, the city of sin and pleasure for the western free world. Assisted by human traffickers and smugglers, their much awaited suicidal martyr was a Woman of Mass Destruction (WMD). Westernized and American educated, desired by almost every man, a woman well adorned as well as scorned, the self appointed terrorist, the self-declared jihadist, the self-anointed martyr was ready to make her move. It all began in an island archipelago in the Pacific, where three young men started out as childhood friends were separated by fate. One became the most wanted notorious non Christian rebel leader in that region, another became a hardened military combat zone officer and the third became... an American. Noor was a casualty turned weapon against the "Infidels". Her mission before she perishes was to inflict as much damage and pain to portions of the society that caused her miseries. To make their statement that the war against terrorism was not over, and will not be over, and will not be won by the "Infidels". She was the network's ultimate weapon against the USA as the start of reviving the plan to totally disabling the US mainland was initiated. She had been very well prepared for a self declared war compounded by ideological pressures from her own kind and groups covering under the protective shield and consolation of religions. "Learning is not compulsory.... Neither is survival." W. Edwards Deming (1900-1993)

Book excerpt: Architecture as Civil Commitment analyses the many ways in which Lucio Costa shaped the discourse of Brazilian modern architecture, tracing the roots, developments, and counter-marches of a singular form of engagement that programmatically chose to act by cultural means rather than by political ones. Split into five chapters, the book addresses specific case-studies of Costa’s professional activity, pointing towards his multiple roles in the Brazilian federal government and focusing on passages of his work that are much less known outside of Brazil, such as his role inside Estado Novo bureaucracy, his leadership at SPHAN, and his participation in UNESCO’s headquarters project, all the way to the design of Brasilia. Digging deep into the original documents, the book crafts a powerful historical reconstruction that gives the international readership a detailed picture of one of the most fascinating architects of the 20th century, in all his contradictory geniality. It is an ideal read for those interested in Brazilian modernism, students and scholars of architectural and urban planning history, socio-cultural and political history, and visual arts.

Students of administration and leadership can frequently find various definitions and concepts of this subject. Although descriptions, titles and labels may be popularized or even canonized, the primary qualification — and responsibility — of leadership will always be seeking knowledge about any given situation. From Wine-Taster To Wall-Builder seeks to give practical examples and lessons taken from actual leadership situations. This is done by examining the performance of leaders when faced with colossal tasks and volatile situations, while also employing very basic principals of effective leadership.

Book excerpt: Whether a house is in the city, out in the country, or near the water, the presence of a patio, a porch or a veranda can provide an important connection between the interior realm of a home and the external context of a residence. Depending on the location, a porch can serve different functions. In the city, it is a refuge from the loud, hectic traffic; in the countryside, it serves as a platform from which to admire the landscape. These spaces, at the border between interior and exterior, can also be used as outdoor dining rooms and sitting rooms, play rooms, or just intermediate ambiences where one can relax and enjoy the surroundings. This volume gathers a selection of international examples of patios, porches, and verandas where the reader will find inspirational design ideas and tips to make the most out of these spaces. Special attention to furniture and plants will help to create great projects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A substantial backyard has long been considered an iconic feature of the Australian suburb. Nevertheless, during the 1990s, a dramatic change occurred: substantial backyards largely disappeared from new suburban houses in Australia. Whatever the size of lot, the dwelling now covers most of its developable area. Although the planning system does not actually promote this change, it does little to prevent it. It appears to be a physical expression of the way that Australian lifestyles are changing for the worse, in particular longer working hours. This in turn raises issues about health and wellbeing, especially for children. Vegetation surrounding the dwelling plays an important role in microclimate, storm drainage and biodiversity, irrespective of whether the residents use their backyard. Its loss has serious ecological implications, a deficit rendered permanent by the changes to the housing stock. The Life and Death of the Australian Backyard is based on a detailed quantitative study of this increasing, but previously unstudied, problem. It discusses the nature, uses and meaning of the traditional backyard, presents an understanding of the changes that have been happening and suggests possible remedies. All professionals working in the landscape and development industries, local government, consultancies and in universities should read this unique study of an issue of increasing significance to urban sustainability.
