Book excerpt: "Pathways to Korean Culture explores the various social, cultural and political perspectives of the Joseon era (1392-1910), introducing the major painting and currents of this dynamic, dynastic period and uncovering the fascinating history of more than 500 years of Korean art and visual culture. Il closely examines the many themes and socio-cultural aspects of the Joseon art world, from the ink painting tradition of the literati elite to the role of women as both patrons and artists. It looks at the various functions paintings had during this period, where they were as important for foreign exchange as they were as a means of escapism. The Joseon dynasty's overarching Confucian ideology was constantly at odds with the culture's Buddhist projects. Burglind Jungmann investigates select clusters of objects to shed light on the multiple layers of personal, intellectual, aesthetic, religious, socio-political and economic contexts in which they are embedded. From palace decorations to formal artworks, Pathways to Korean Culture takes a sweeping, comprehensive look at Korean history and visual culture, exploring its engagement with the West, its political affiliations with China, and its uniquely varied artists and artistic output."--Rabat de la jaquette.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding a people and their culture through code words and language. Today, South Korea is an economic, technological and entertainment superpower. How, as a country, did they rebound from war, poverty and political unrest? And how can that success be replicated in other cultures? The answers can, in fact, be found by understanding Korean customs, values and beliefs. Author Boye Lafayette De Mente identifies the unique qualities that comprise the Korean identity and articulates their modern expressions of Korean culture and history in this book. Organized alphabetically by topic, De Mente explains the critical cultural code words that make Korea the country it is today. Anyone interested in Korean etiquette, whether for travel or work, will discover that their meanings extend far beyond superficial English translations to deeper interpretations. Cultural code words include: Aboji, Ah-boh-jee -- The "Father Culture" Anae, Ah-negh -- Wives: The Inside People Han Yak, Hahn Yahk -- The Herbal Way to Health Innae, Een-nay -- A Culture of Enduring Katun Sosuy Pap, Kaht-unn Soh-suut Pahp -- Eating from the Same Rice Bowl And over 200 more… This in-depth discussion covers the concepts and principles that are integral to the Korean way of life and provides all the Korean history and insight necessary for those readers eager to learn the secrets of this resilient and burgeoning, yet little-understood nation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written for those who are going to teach Korean culture. Perhaps couple of questions will follow this statement, such as 'Should we learn Korean culture?', 'What's the purpose of learning Korean culture?' or 'Who is teaching and who is learning?', etc. We would like to answer to these questions as follows. We should learn Korean culture if we are to properly know about Korea. Also, we should learn and get familiar with Korean culture if we want to correctly learn Korean language. Furthermore, we should know about our own Korean culture in order to build up the capability of understanding other cultures which are not ours. That is, people should know about Korean culture in advance in order to understand Korea and Korean language correctly, and should learn and know Korean culture in order to correctly understand foreign cultures. Here the person who wants to know about Korea can be either a Korean or a foreigner. Of course, most of the people who want to learn Korean language might be foreigners. Also, If he or she wants to learn Korean culture, he or she can be either a Korean or a foreigner. With respect to culture education, if we call the people who teach about Korean culture 'Korean culture teachers', then the people who learn Korean culture can be called 'Korean culture learners.' Here it is not so important whether the Korean culture learner can command Korean language or not. This is because the education of Korean culture can be given by either Korean language or the learner's language. Then, what are the capability and quality required for the Korean culture teachers. What is mostly necessary for them is the capability to interpret the past·present·future of Korea and the phenomena which can be observed in each time frame. Also the teachers need to acknowledge and accommodate foreign cultures and have the capability of objectifying their own culture and comparing it with foreign cultures. Finally, they should get familiarized to the basic teaching technique that is to propose the contents of education which fit to the level and requirement of the learners. Therefore, the teaching materials for the Korean culture teachers should include 'Contents of Korean culture' for teaching, 'Method for developing teacher's capability', and 'Applicable teaching materials'. In this regard, we explored various sides of Seoul in its history and integrated tons of materials to provide cultural contents in this book under the theme of 'Change of Korea', where we could find out the hidden causes of the change through our conversation. And finally, based on the contents described above, we provided teaching materials which can be used for in-situ culture education.

The questions raised in this book range from the mundane to the spiritual, each touching on the essence of Korea's 5,000-year-old culture: Why is a Korean spoon flat and round, not oval? Why do Korean women pray to a bowl of water? Why do Koreans eat dog meat? Kim Yol-kyu, a renowned scholar of Korean folklore and literature, carefully digs up the answers embedded deep in centuries-old customs. Quoting from a wide scope of references, from ancient mythology to Merleau-Ponty and Levi-Strauss, Kim unearths the fascinating connections between the past and the present. Kim is Dignified Professor of Korean Studies at Keimyung University in Daegu, Korea, where he also directs the Academia Koreana.

Book excerpt: korean wave, hallyu,Korean culture,Korean, south korea,Korean pop culture This book is the first in a series of upcoming books to introduce modern Korean culture overseas. The term “Korean Wave” (“Hallyu” in Korean) was coined by the Chinese press a little more than a decade ago to refer to the popularity of Korean pop culture in China. The boom started with the export of Korean television dramas (miniseries) to China in the late 1990s. Since then, South Korea has emerged as a new center for the production of transnational pop culture, exporting a range of cultural products to neighboring Asian countries. More recently, Korean pop culture has begun spreading from its comfort zone in Asia to more global audiences in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and the Americas.
