Essays by leading historians review the literature on American diplomacy in the early Republic and in the age of Manifest Destiny, on American imperialism in the late nineteenth century and in the age of Roosevelt and Taft, on war and peace in the Wilsonian era, on foreign policy in the Republican ascendancy of the 1920s, and on the origins of World War II in Europe and the Pacific. The result is a comprehensive assessment of the current literature, helpful suggestions for further research, and a useful primer for students and scholars of American foreign relations.

Book excerpt: If you want to "change lives, change organizations, change the world," the Stanford business school’s motto, you need power. Is power the last dirty secret or the secret to success? Both. While power carries some negative connotations, power is a tool that can be used for good or evil. Don’t blame the tool for how some people used it. If fully understood and harnessed effectively, power skills and understanding become the keys to increasing salaries, job satisfaction, career advancement, organizational change, and, happiness. In 7 Rules of Power, Jeffrey Pfeffer, professor of organizational behavior at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business, provides the insights that have made both his online and on-campus classes incredibly popular—with life-changing results often achieved in 8 or 10 weeks. Rooted firmly in social science research, Pfeffer’s 7 rules provide a manual for increasing your ability to get things done, including increasing the positive effects of your job performance. The 7 rules are: 1) Get out of your own way. 2) Break the rules. 3) Show up in powerful fashion. 4) Create a powerful brand. 5) Network relentlessly. 6) Use your power. 7) Understand that once you have acquired power, what you did to get it will be forgiven, forgotten, or both. With 7 Rules of Power, you’ll learn, through both numerous examples as well as research evidence, how to accomplish change in your organization, your life, the lives of others, and the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a recovering “leadershipaholic": our best model is the first one. With all our sleek ministry models, it’s a wonder our churches are declining—until we read Acts 6:4, “But we will give ourselves continually to prayer and the ministry of the word.” After a long, sometimes trying ministry journey, Daniel Henderson was relieved to discover what the apostles knew from the start: The main thing must stay the main thing. It worked in their pagan times, and it will in ours. Old Paths, New Power: Reviving Our Churches through Prayer and the Ministry of the Word calls us back to the tried-and-true: pray and proclaim the word. Henderson, who leads a growing church revival ministry, guides you through the essentials of sparking a spiritual renaissance: Be a leader who walks with the Lord Develop a strong prayer culture in your life and ministry Preach with unction, dependence, and integrity Equip every saint for the work of the ministry Embrace the sufficiency of the gospel Our churches don’t need fresh models and fancy things; they need the Holy Spirit, and He rains down when we pray and proclaim the word. Read Old Paths, New Power and follow God’s master plan.

Book excerpt: We present in these pages an outline, which may at least serve to suggest the way to a greater spiritual power for many of us. Or, as the title intimates, each major idea may be a "path" leading to a life of abundant grace promised in the Sacred Word. Let us remember that a path is merely a way toward something; it can never be the thing itself. A knowledge of the truth is not enough; the truth must be followed if we would realize in actual experience the blessedness which is here described.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about power. The power wielded over others - by absolute monarchs, tyrannical totalitarian regimes and military occupiers - and the power of the people who resist and deny their rulers' claims to that authority by whatever means. The extraordinary events in the Middle East in 2011 offered a vivid example of how non-violent demonstration can topple seemingly invincible rulers. Drawing on these dramatic events and parallel moments in the modern history of the Middle East, from the violent uprisings in Algeria against the French in the early twentieth century, to revolution in Iran in 1979, and the Palestinian intifada, the book considers the ways in which the people have united to unseat their oppressors and fight against the status quo to shape a better future. The book also probes the relationship between power and forms of resistance and how common experiences of violence and repression create new collective identities. Nowhere is this more strikingly exemplified than in the art of the Middle East, its posters and graffiti, and its provocative installations which are discussed in the concluding chapter. This brilliant, yet unsettling book affords a panoramic view of the twentieth and twenty-first century Middle East through occupation, oppression, and political resistance.

Book excerpt: It is a tempting idea to believe that the power to achieve happiness and success is already in our hands. It is revolutionary to not only declare that it is true, but to show empirical evidence and teach the secret of reining in one's own power, particularly in a volume as small and accessible as this one, first published in 1901. Nonetheless, Floyd B. Wilson does just that-coaches the skills necessary to focus one's powers of concentration and suggestion to shape the world and draw to you the results you desire while illuminating the way to create harmony of mind, body, and soul, and most importantly, maintain a true and pure spiritual self.American FLOYD BAKER WILSON (b. 1845) spent a great deal of time studying the spiritual world, magnetism, and Eastern philosophy. A professional attorney and member of the order of Masons, he authored a number of books on New Age Thought, including Man Limitless (1905), Man of To-morrow (1914), and Through Silence to Realization (1906).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India has emerged as a rapidly developing economy in the 21st century. However, to support this growth, India needs to modernize its electricity sector and increase its generating capacity in the coming years. This calls for substantial investment in the sector over the next few decades. The investments must be economically, socially, and culturally consistent with the needs of India. Such investments in the energy sector being long term in nature, appropriate choices must also be made from the perspective of technology and environment This publication focuses on various 'alternatives in development' to ensure future sustainability of India's electricity industry and generate policy options for both developing the power sector and mobilizing foreign resources. It also looks at the critical issue of how India can develop required institutional framework that can promote the modernization of the electricity sector by encouraging endogenous and exogenous sources of funding into specific areas, issues related to technology transfer and sustainable development, the role of donor agencies and climate change funds, etc. A three-pronged research strategy was adopted to untangle the issues facing the electricity sector in India. First, the research team carried out a literature survey covering scientific literature, reports, and policy documents. Second, it studied country-specific cases to understand the lessons learnt from specific outcomes of the work done by other countries. And third, the team interviewed various stakeholders from the private sector, government, multilateral institutions, non-governmental organizations, and academic community. The information thus gathered was finally synthesized and a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis was carried out. This publication, titled Alternate development paths: scope for mobilizing international resources for funding the power sector in India, will be useful to policy-makers, financial analysts, academics, decision-makers in international development agencies, and those interested in India's power sector.
