Book excerpt: It has only recently been appreciated that the immune and skeletal systems have major interactions. It is now well documented that osteoclasts, which are important cellular mediators of skeletal homeostasis, are derived from hematopoietic precursors that also give rise to immune cells. In addition, numerous cytokines that were first shown to regulate immune cell function have also been demonstrated to regulate bone cells and influence skeletal health. Conversely, products of bone cells appear critical for the engraftment of marrow in bone, the normal development of the hematopoietic and immune systems and provide niche for long-term memory B and T cells. In the past scientists involved in immune and bone cell investigations have rarely interacted in a significant way as these disciplines have developed independently and, for the most part, remain separate. The conference will bring together leading international scientists from both fields to interact so that new collaboration can develop and more rapid progress in understanding the relationships between these fields can be achieved. Short talks will be selected from abstracts from the international community. This conference will have a format to provide an environment of maximum interaction and interchange through lectures, posters, and open discussion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much research has focused on the basic cellular and molecular biological aspects of stem cells. Much of this research has been fueled by their potential for use in regenerative medicine applications, which has in turn spurred growing numbers of translational and clinical studies. However, more work is needed if the potential is to be realized for improvement of the lives and well-being of patients with numerous diseases and conditions. This book series 'Cell Biology and Translational Medicine (CBTMED)' as part of Springer Nature’s long-standing and very successful Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology book series, has the goal to accelerate advances by timely information exchange. Emerging areas of regenerative medicine and translational aspects of stem cells are covered in each volume. Outstanding researchers are recruited to highlight developments and remaining challenges in both the basic research and clinical arenas. This current book is the twelfth volume of a continuing series.

Book excerpt: Notable practitioners describe how laboratory medicine is practiced today and illuminate how it will function tomorrow as the revolutionary advances afforded by molecular diagnostics become increasingly central to effective analysis. Proceeding from a discussion of elementary nucleic acid technology to a review of the more advanced techniques, the distinguished contributors lay the groundwork for a comprehensive understanding of their applications throughout clinical medicine. The result is a detailed description of those molecular technologies currently used in diagnostic laboratories, as well as those that seem particularly promising. Detailed discussions of specific clinical applications include those for cancer, hematological malignancies, cardiovascular disease, and neuromuscular, endocrine, and infectious diseases.

One of our biggest successes was in the ever-expanding set of didactic lecture notes and radiologic, gross, microscopic, ultrastructural, and other images that course participants received, so it wasn’t much of a surprise when we were approached by the publisher to consider creating an updated compilation of some of the best talks and packaging them in a monograph available to a broader population of physicians and scientists. With the extraordinary attention to detail that he is known for, my co-editor David Chhieng has been both the brains and the brawn of this project, resulting in the bringing together of such a collection while trying to be sensitive and representative of the various branches of pathology reflected in the actual course. From surgical pathology, chapters cover select topics in endocrine, gynecologic, GU, and GI pathology with contributions from Walter Bell, Michael Conner, Katrin Klemm, and Audrey Lazenby, respectively. Tom Winokur has begun to prepare us for the near future with a treatise on molecular markers in breast cancer. The interactive nature of cytopathology and surgical pathology are brought together by Claudia Castro [now at the U. T. Medical Branch at Galveston] and David Chhieng in three chapters covering mediastinal, pleural, and pulmonary pathology.

Book excerpt: This two volume book set provides a comprehensive and practical overview of the state-of-the-art molecular biological diagnostic strategies that are currently used in a wide variety of disciplines. The volumes cover: Clinical microbiology and virology Clinical chemistry Pathology Veterinary medicine Plant Pathology Food safety The two volumes are written by experts in their respective fields, who have, together with the editors, combined years of experience in the development, application and quality control of molecular diagnostic methods. The first book is devoted to the theory and backgrounds of molecular techniques, amplification technology, next generation sequencing and bioinformatics for molecular laboratory diagnostics. As a fundament of reliable molecular diagnostic assays, the quality control required for validation, implementation and performance of molecular diagnostic assays is extensively discussed. The second book highlights the applications of these methods in the various diagnostic laboratories. These two full-colour well-illustrated volumes are particularly valuable for students, clinicians, scientists and other professionals who are interested in (designing) molecular diagnostic tests and for those who wish to expand their knowledge on the current molecular biological revolution. The extensive information in both books highlights the current trend of the integration of multiple (clinical) disciplines into one universal molecular laboratory.

The volume features chapters on the basics of DNA isolation, protein isolation, and lipid isolation, as well as more sophisticated techniques for isolation of ribosomes, and continues with sections involving analyzing subcellular fractions, culture methods, sequencing technology, in vitro models, molecular methods, as well as drug discovery applications. Written for the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and up-to-date, Mycobacteria Protocols, Fourth Edition serves as an ideal guide for those starting out with their mycobacteria research and also for those who have worked with it for decades.

Antibiotics have indeed brought unprecedented health benefits, protection from and cure of bacterial diseases during the past 50 years. But there are ominous signs that the fortress and the defenses built on antibiotics are crumbling. They are crum bling because we wittingly or unwittingly created selective con ditions for the emergence of superior pathogens that can no longer be controlled by antibiotics. There are numerous warnings. After a long period of eclipse tuberculosis has now emerged as a serious threat unchecked by antibiotic treatment. Recent years have seen reports of cholera epidemics, of anthrax infections, of serious problems with Salmonella and even with E. coli, just to name a few. Mankind is in a race with microbial invaders. The challenge is to anticipate and respond to developments that affect the precarious balance between man and microbe. This will re quire new knowledge and it will take time for an effective appli cation of that knowledge.
