Book excerpt: 'Etiology and Pathogenesis of Periodontal Disease' represents a new concept in periodontology with its pronounced focus on understanding through knowledge rather than presenting the present valid answers. Connections between the diseases in the periodontium and general health are described in detail. Even if periodontal disease is certainly not a generally accepted cause of death, periodontal treatment may obviously save lives.

Book excerpt: This book aims to provide clinicians with a refined understanding of the biology that underlies periodontal diseases, thereby offering a sound basis for improved clinical decision making with regard to prevention strategies, diagnosis, and therapy. All significant aspects of periodontal pathogenesis are covered, including the roles played by the oral microbiome and biofilms, bacterial virulence factors, cells of the immune system, matrix metalloproteinases, proinflammatory and osteolytic cytokines, genetic factors, and antimicrobial peptides. Periodontal diseases are among the most common infectious diseases in humans, and the primary cause of tooth loss in adults. The functional and esthetic problems associated with these diseases compromise quality of life, and their treatment imposes large financial burdens on national health systems and private patients. Up-to-date knowledge of periodontal pathogenesis is therefore essential for the contemporary clinician. This book, written by experts from Europe and the Americas, delivers such knowledge in an accessible, clinician-friendly way.

The first chapter gives a broad overview of periodontal disease and is followed by accounts of the periodontium in health and disease. The book then deals with the micro-organisms implicated in periodontal disease and evaluates their significance. The host responses to factors present in dental plaque are discussed, followed by an account of the interactions between bacteria and the host which cause tissue damage. This leads to a consideration of the different clinical manifestations of the disease, including those associated with HIV infection. In the final chapter, a rational approach to treatment is presented, based on an understanding of the disease mechanisms discussed in the book.

It is fully searchable and designed to enhance the learning experience. Within the book a description is presented of the current concepts presenting the complex interactions of microbial fingerprint, multiple genotypes, and host modulations. In addition, an overview is given of the clinical outcome of the disease's progression, as influenced by the epigenetic factors. Emerging concepts on periodontitis as a risk factor for various systemic diseases and as a bilateral modulating factor have been elucidated in detail as well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The association between periodontitis and systemic diseases has become a hot topic in recent years. This comprehensive book reviews the clinical evidence and biological plausibility of the many systemic diseases that have been linked to periodontitis. Edited by Dr Josefine Hirschfeld and Prof Iain L.C. Chapple, experts in each field discuss the mechanisms at work, citing the available key literature and clearly summarising current knowledge and understanding of the associations between periodontitis and diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney disease, inflammatory bowel diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, respiratory diseases, pregnancy and fertility, malignancy, neurodegenerative diseases, stress and depression, and autoimmunity. Each chapter critically appraises the existing evidence, providing comprehensive, contemporary and well-considered insights into the clinical evidence and biological plausibility of each condition, as well as the limitations of existing studies and how these can be overcome in the future. Periodontitis and Systemic Diseases: Clinical Evidence and Biological Plausibility is an indispensable reference for both clinicians and researchers.

Book excerpt: Periodontitis - A Useful Reference is a comprehensive book compiled by a team of experts with the objective of providing an overview of the basic pathology of "periodontitis" and its implication on oral health and general systemic health. Periodontitis has become a global health burden in recent days. It is noteworthy that oral health is being considered as the mirror of general health and the study of oral-systemic health connections has advanced among scientists, clinicians, and the public as well. We wish the array of chapters that highlights the importance and impact of periodontal health could be a useful guide for the community of public, students, and clinicians.

Book excerpt: The book presents a collection of 10 articles published in a Special Issue entitled "Oral Inflammations and Systemic Diseases" in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences (ISSN 1422-0067) in the section "Molecular Pathology, Diagnostics, and Therapeutics". The oral inflammations that are covered in this issue consist of dental caries, periodontitis, and gingivitis, with a preponderance of periodontitis. Periodontitis is clearly a bacterial disease; however, it is not an infectious disease in the classical sense because it results from complex interactions between the commensal microbiota, host susceptibility and environmental factors such as diet and smoking. The human mouth contains one of the most diverse microbiomes in the human body, comprising viruses, fungi, protozoa, archaea and bacteria. The peer-reviewed articles of the book consist of original and review papers focused on the question of how exposure of the mouth to specific oral microbiota impacts systemic diseases, such as neuroinflammation, atherosclerosis, diabetes, and arthritis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A long time, periodontitis was believed to be an inevitable consequence of aging and uniformly distributed in population. This age old belief was again supported by another belief that disease severity was directly proportional to plaque levels. But in the mid 1990’s early insight about complex diseases like periodontitis, led to new conceptual models of pathogenesis. In recent years, the role of microorganisms as the principle etiologic factor in periodontal diseases has gained new perspectives. Periodontal disease is a multifactorial and complex disease which is characterized by an upregulated or maladapted immune inflammatory response to bacterial plaque which predisposes to periodontal breakdown. Although periodontal disease is initiated by bacteria colonizing the tooth surface and gingival sulcus, the host response is believed to play an important role in the breakdown of connective tissue and bone. Thus, it can be summarized that periodontopathogens are necessary to cause periodontal disease but they are not sufficient to cause the disease. In response to infectious or inflammatory disease, two distinct yet intricately linked immune responses occur – innate & adaptive. The immune system is essential and the body has to marshal the innate and adaptive responses in order to stave off infection. However, in inflammatory disease the response becomes chronic and tissues do not return to homeostasis. The development of an immune inflammatory response during periodontitis in susceptible individuals results in the local production of a variety of inflammatory mediators. The development of an immune inflammatory response during periodontitis in susceptible individuals results in the local production of a variety of inflammatory mediators. Pro-inflammatory cytokines molecules and the cytokine network play an essential role in the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases. Therefore, the aim of this review is to provide comprehensive information and an update on various therapeutic methods to modify the host response as an adjunctive treatment for periodontitis.
