Book excerpt: We assessed the federally endangered Amargosa vole (Microtus californicus scirpensis) and sympatric rodents for pathogen prevalence and infestation with Neotrombicula microti, a larval trombiculid mite, from December 2011- November 2012 in Tecopa Hot Springs, Inyo County, California. We found important pathogens in the Amargosa vole population including Toxoplasma gondii, Bartonella spp. and Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (SL) spp., and antibodies against Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Rickettsia spp., Borrelia spp., and T. gondii, while sympatric rodents had active infections with Bartonella spp. and Borrelia SL species. We collected Ixodes minor from captured rodents which is of interest since the study area is outside of the tick's reported range. Additionally, we found I. minor ticks infected with both A. phagocytophilum and Borrelia spp. showing a potential mode of pathogen import from outside the Amargosa ecosystem. The ninety-five percent confidence interval of true prevalence of N. microti infestation among voles was twenty seven to forty seven percent with females having a statistically greater prevalence of infestation than males. Histopathologic examination of vole tissue samples from N. microti infested ears revealed neutrophilic, lymphocytic, granulocytic and macrophage infiltration with hyperkeratosis, acanthosis, sub-corneal pustules and ulceration consistent across all levels of gross pathology. Both inflammation and necrosis were correlated with the extent of gross pathology, however no association was found between body condition score or animal weight. Our results for both pathogens and N. microti infestation do not support sympatric rodents as the cause of exposure to voles, however we recommend ongoing monitoring for disease and ectoparasites within the population as a critical component of Amargosa vole management and recovery efforts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together information on the natural history, ecology and systematics of North American aquatic monocotyledons. The book is an overview of the biology of major aquatic species by compiling information from numerous sources that lie scattered among the primary literature, herbarium databases, and other reference sources. Information on more than 300 species in 87 genera of monocotyledons will be included. Recent phylogenetic analyses will be incorporated. Although focusing specifically on North America, the cosmopolitan distribution of many aquatic plants should make this an attractive text to people working virtually anywhere outside of the region as well. Key Selling Features: The primary source of natural history information on aquatic plants Comprehensive lists of ecological associates Synthetic overview of systematic relationships of aquatic species and genera Practical information for rare and invasive plant managers Essential guide to facilitate wetland delineation

Book excerpt: In recent years nobody could have failed to notice the frequent and often sensati- alist media headlines warning of the latest global disease threat to humankind. But behind all the hyperbole lie real challenges related to dealing with the increasing incidence of emerging zoonotic disease events, the majority of which are thought to originate in wildlife (Jones et al. 2008). There are also many important diseases of domestic livestock which also occur in wildlife (e. g. foot and mouth disease and classical swine fever in wild boar, bovine tuberculosis in deer, badgers or possums), some of which can have a devastating impact on the farming industry, the wider rural economy and ultimately the public purse. But we should also not forget that wildlife diseases may have serious implications for the conservation of biodiversity. For some of the rarest, most endangered species (such as the Ethiopian wolf) d- ease may pose the greatest threat to their survival. If we are to avoid or reduce these impacts then we must improve our ability to detect and manage the risks associated with disease in wildlife populations. This is a challenge that will require expertise from many different disciplines: veterinary, ecological, medical, economic, poli- cal and zoological. In such an interdisciplinary field it is difficult to stay up to date with contemporary ideas and with techniques that may be rapidly evolving.

Book excerpt: The broad spectrum of topics covered in the nine symposia and four open-paper sessions of the Third Inter national Wildlife Disease Conference comprise a remarkable collection of ideas and current research information on diseases of wildlife. The term "wildlife" is broad in itself and is interpreted by the Conference sponsor, The Wildlife Disease Association, to mean all free-living vertebrate and invertebrate members of the animal kingdom. The Conference's invitational symposia brought to Munich an array of wildlife specialists from around the world who addressed major problems affecting the under standing and control of diseases of wildlife. The open paper sessions attracted many well-known scientists with detailed data from their specialized studies. Over 100 participants were present to hear 84 scientific papers. The Wildlife Disease Association and the Conference editors, through their publisher, are pleased to offer this compilation of presentations as a Conference Pro ceedings. This volume will be an important data source for the study of diseases of wildlife by students, specialists, and general biologists everywhere. WDA President W. G. Winkler expresses the Associa tion's gratitude to the Conference Chairman, Prof. Dr. H.

Book excerpt: The first comprehensive treatment of North American rodents of conservation concern. This action plan summarizes the rodent fauna of North America and provides available information on every rodent taxon that has been considered to be of conservation concern by state, provincial and private conservation agencies and regional experts. It is hoped that the survey provided in this action plan will serve as a common ground for all these parties in drawing up conservation strategies for rodents.
