Book excerpt: Pathism: Finding God in the Cosmos posits that we should no longer feel content to sacrifice our spirituality because it clashes with our intellect or morality. Spirituality should never ask such things of a person. For if there truly is a divine force at work in the cosmos then surely it would never wish us to compromise our principles to align with man-made dogma. This book looks at the formation and evolution of religion and spirituality throughout human history. We examine how religion has been historically wielded as a weapon to attack those who dare to think differently, or as shackles which those in power use to control the hearts and minds of the masses. This does not have to be the case any longer. In an age when more and more people are becoming religions "nones" (those who identify with no religion) we have to ask whether or not simply giving up on spirituality is the answer. Do we let the establishment win simply because we can't be bothered? Do we lead an existence devoid of spirituality just because so many others have perverted it to their own ends? Pathism seeks to take back what was lost. To give us "nones" a community to call our own again. To reclaim spirituality in the name of those who profess that love, tolerance, intelligence, and compassion mean far more to the world than ancient texts or rituals.

Book excerpt: Reason and science gave the Recindian Compact wonders like steam engines, telegraphs, and gunpowder. The world had order. It made sense. Until one night two multi-colored bands of light split the sky, spanning the horizons like rings around the planet. Soon after, unnatural storms assaulted the Compact's cities. Whispers spread of ghoulish creatures haunting Compact forests. And then a message from a legendary race called the Mystics - "ally with us to fight the growing evil, or we all perish." The Compact's desperate leaders turn to disgraced history professor Taran Abraeu. Taran spent years searching in vain for the ancient healing magic of the Mystics to save his dying daughter. His family and colleagues once mocked him. Now his research might save them. When the Compact asks Taran to accompany a secret delegation to the Mystic homeland, he is swept up in an adventure that forces him to fight a horrifying enemy that only he among all his people can comprehend.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third English Dictionary which the present Editor has prepared, and he may therefore lay claim to an unusually prolonged apprenticeship to his trade. It is surely unnecessary for him to say that he believes this to be the best book of the three, and he can afford to rest content if the Courteous Reader receive it with the indulgence extended to his Library Dictionary, published in the spring of 1898. It is based upon that work, but will be found to possess many serviceable qualities of its own. It is not much less in content, and its greater relative portability is due to smaller type, to thinner paper, and still more to a rigorous compression and condensation in the definitions, by means of which room has been found for many additional words. The aim has been to include all the common words in literary and conversational English, together with words obsolete save in the pages of Spenser, Shakespeare, Milton, and the Authorised Version of the Bible. An attempt has been made also to include the common terms of the sciences and the arts of life, the vocabulary of sport, those Scotch and provincial words which assert themselves in Burns, Scott, the Brontës, and George Eliot, and even the coinages of word-masters like Carlyle, Browning, and Meredith. Numberless compound idiomatic phrases have also been given a place, in each case under the head of the significant word.

THOMAS DAVIDSON ASSISTANT-EDITOR OF 'CHAMBERS'S ENCYCLOPÆDIA' EDITOR OF 'CHAMBERS'S ENGLISH DICTIONARY Since there are many other updated English dictionaries online and otherwise in the digital form, downloading this dictionary of the yesteryears might not be of any use as a means to find the meaning of English words. However to those who would like to know the whereabouts of the pristine-English that was there in pristine-England, this dictionary would be an ideal possession. It was an age when many English letters came in various combined form - the so-called Alphabetic ligatures. Another mentionable item would be insights that can be had on what were original meanings of various English words. There are so-many words whose meaning has altered much over the past few years and decades.

Book excerpt: From #1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson, the Mistborn series is a heist story of political intrigue and magical, martial-arts action. Three hundred years after the events of the Mistborn trilogy, Kelsier and Vin have passed into the realm of history and myth, and the world of Scadrial is on the verge of modernity. In the frontier lands known as the Roughs, the old magics are a crucial tool for those who establish order and justice. One such is Waxillium Ladrian, a rare Twinborn, who can Push on metals with his Allomancy and use Feruchemy to become lighter or heavier at will. After twenty years in the Roughs, tragedy has driven Wax back to the metropolis of Elendel. Now he must reluctantly put away his guns and assume the duties of the head of a noble house. But when a gang of Allomancers turn to train robbery and kidnapping, Wax will soon learn that the mansions and elegant tree-lined streets of the city can be more dangerous than the dusty plains of the Roughs. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People differ in their cognitive styles—their ways of getting and using information to solve problems and make decisions. Alfred G. Smith and his associates studied these differences in a selected group of over 800 students at a score of law schools throughout the United States. Two major cognitive styles were identified: that of the monopath, who follows a single route of established principles and procedures, and that of the polypath, who takes many routes, as circumstances suggest. A battery of both original and standard tests was administered to both law students and their professors to investigate differences in cognitive style and their relationships to self-image, anxiety, and academic achievement. This also revealed differences in prevailing styles at different schools. The results will be of special interest to readers concerned with legal education, to psychologists, and to behavioral scientists. The research format developed here will serve equally well for raising significant questions about the professions of medicine, education, social work, and others in which cognitive and communication styles play a central role in determining outcomes.

Heath reads Clement of Alexandria's Paedagogus alongside modern approaches to the judgement of taste and aesthetics to show how Clement's forming of the tastes and habits of his audience was vital to early Christian beliefs and practices. In turn, the book also develops a theological response to Pierre Bourdieu's theory of taste.
