This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of a pastor's role in the community is to pray publicly. The pastor is often the official "pray-er" at all kinds of community events--the high school football game, the opening of the new grocery store, the county school board meeting, kindergarten graduation--to name a few. But the pastor must also pray knowing that there are believers (of many persuasions) and non-believers present. This book will contain sample prayers for many civic functions that can be used with little modification. Belton Joyner is a retired United Methodist pastor and author of Being Methodist in the Bible Belt: A Theological Survival Guide for Youth, Parents, and Other Confused Methodists

Download or read book Praying in Public written by Pat Quinn and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2021-07-13 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Comprehensive Guide to Corporate Prayer God commands his people to pray together and answers graciously when they do. The Bible specifically calls on church leaders to guide this essential form of corporate worship, but it can be challenging to pray boldly and confidently in front of others. This practical, step-by-step guide was created to help pastors and church leaders pray thoughtfully and biblically in public. Through seven guiding principles, Pat Quinn illustrates how to lead prayers of adoration, confession, and supplication to God, and covers the history of public prayer in Scripture. He also includes elegant, reverent, gospel-centered examples from the Latin Liturgy, John Calvin, the Puritans, John Wesley, and others, as well as many examples of his own congregational prayers. Pastors and church leaders will learn to glorify God more passionately, effectively intercede for the church and the world, and find joy—not fear—in praying publicly.
Book Synopsis Private Prayers in Public Places by : Donald Shockley
Download or read book Private Prayers in Public Places written by Donald Shockley and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2003-12 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Don Shockley may be the only person in America who likes to wait. He has discovered that active waiting opens the door to spiritual experiences that are often humorous as well as serious and deep. He believes that the key to prayer is not in the act of asking but in the art of listening. For more than twenty-five years he has transformed the necessity to wait into an opportunity to look, listen and learn. More often than not this distinctive form of meditation has been practiced in urban environments: waiting rooms of doctors and dentists; on buses, planes and trains; in bakeries, coffee shops and college cafeterias; in libraries, parks and bars. These spiritual interludes have been captured in exceptionally vivid writing; you can "see" what the author is saying. When the late Howard Thurman, one of America's foremost spiritual thinkers, saw some of the early pieces included in this book, he said they were "precisely on target" and should be shared. Over the years since, these Private Prayers in Public Places have been well received when read before various groups, and at long last they are now available in print.

Book Synopsis Book of Pastoral Prayer by : Theophilus Floyd
Download or read book Book of Pastoral Prayer written by Theophilus Floyd and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-05-16 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work, "A Book of Pastoral Prayers" originally authored by Ernest Fremont Tittle, is of particular significance to me. My father, the Reverend James D. Floyd carried a copy in his breast pocket and consulted it often for prayer. I grew up hearing prayers from its pages, and when my father (may his memory be eternal) reposed in the Lord, I received his copy. It is in his memory, and that of my mother who was a driving force behind his ministry, that I dedicate this modernized and revised version. My father began the work of modernizing in himself. Throughout his copy are hand scrawled notes where he modernized the language, added passages for ladies, and made a few prayers more inclusive. He was always particularly fond of older forms of prayer, and felt that prayers passed down from our ancestors were of particular importance. He worked hard to modernize them, and to make them inclusive of every individual in every situation. In this respect, he was years ahead of his time, even within the Methodist Church. He truly believed that Christ was in each and every person, regardless of their past and their sin. He always sought out that little spark of Christ and did everything that he could to nurture it into an all-consuming flame.

Download or read book Visual Theology written by Tim Challies and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in a visual culture. Today, people increasingly rely upon visuals to help them understand new and difficult concepts. The rise and stunning popularity of the Internet infographic has given us a new way in which to convey data, concepts and ideas. But the visual portrayal of truth is not a novel idea. Indeed, God himself used visuals to teach truth to his people. The tabernacle of the Old Testament was a visual representation of man's distance from God and God's condescension to his people. Each part of the tabernacle was meant to display something of man's treason against God and God's kind response. Likewise, the sacraments of the New Testament are visual representations of man's sin and God's response. Even the cross was both reality and a visual demonstration. As teachers and lovers of sound theology, Challies and Byers have a deep desire to convey the concepts and principles of systematic theology in a fresh, beautiful and informative way. In this book, they have made the deepest truths of the Bible accessible in a way that can be seen and understood by a visual generation.

Book Synopsis Pastoral Prayers to Share, Year A by : David Sparks
Download or read book Pastoral Prayers to Share, Year A written by David Sparks and published by Wood Lake Publishing Inc.. This book was released on 2010 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "So what are we about as pastoral pray-ers? We are about bringing ourselves individually and as a faith community into right relationship with God..." What about aRevised Common Lectionarybased book of pastoral prayers for clergy and lay leaders that provides responsive prayers for each Sunday of the year, including propers? David gets asked this question often when people recognize him as the author of the three volumes ofPrayers to Share. So, acknowledging that the pastoral prayer is often overlooked and undervalued, and that clergy and lay leaders may be hard-pressed for time to compose a fresh pastoral prayer each week, he has put together a unique and comprehensive collection of prayers that can be adapted to present circumstances and used in a variety of settings. The prayers are responsive, written for one or two leaders and a congregational response. They all allow for the inclusion of local and worldwide current events, and individual and congregational concerns. David usually uses the weekly Gospel reading as the broad theme for the prayers and divides them into four easily identified sections: world suffering church ourselves The "how to use" section covers preparing to offer pastoral prayer, and offers 12 ways to "do" pastoral prayer, such as: two leader congregational response using people and objects to dramatize a theme using part of a hymn for a lead or a response using silence for effect Each week offers specific suggestions for two or three prayer formats. Other features include: Thematic Index Scripture Index Icons in the margin to enable quick identification of prayer sections and alternate suggestions Data CD with text files for Year A
