Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When pastors and congregations come together in ministry, they generally do so with the hope that the relationship will be long-lasting and dynamic. The reality, however, is that long-term pastorates are an increasingly rare phenomenon in congregations. White there are many reasons that most pastors can only sustain their ministries in a parish for a relatively limited number of years, Glenn Ludwig argues that this does not have to be the case if both pastors and congregations take deliberate steps toward an enduring friendship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the second in a three-part, multi-authored study of Polish American history which aims to present the history of Polish Americans in the United States from the beginning of Polish presence on the continent to the current times, shown against a broad historical background of developments in Poland, the United States and other locations of the Polish Diaspora. According to the 2010 US Census, there are 9.5 million persons who identify themselves as Polish Americans in the United States, making them the eighth largest ethnic group in the country today. Polish Americans, or Polonia for short, has always been one of the largest immigrant and ethnic groups and the largest Slavic group in America. Despite that, common knowledge about its social and political life, culture and economy is still inadequate – in Academia and among the Polish Americans themselves. The book discusses the major themes in Polish American history, such as organizational life and the structure of the community facing subsequent waves of immigration from Poland, its leadership and political involvement in Polish and American affairs, as well as living and working conditions, and the everyday life of families and communities, their culture, ethnic identity and relations with the broadly understood American society, starting from the outbreak of World War 2 in Poland in September, 1939, and ending with the highlights of the 21st-century developments. It depicts Polish Americans’ transition from a ‘minority’ through ‘ethnic’ group to Americans who take pride in their symbolic ethnicity, maintained intentionally and manifested occasionally. This volume will be of great value to students and scholars alike interested in Polish and American History and Social and Cultural History.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last, rootless decade families, neighborhoods, and communities have disintegrated in the face of gripping social, economic, and technological changes. Th is process has had mixed results. On the positive side, it has produced a mobile, volatile, and dynamic society in the United States that is perhaps more open, just, and creative than ever before. On the negative side, it has dissolved the glue that bound our society together and has destroyed many of the myths, symbols, values, and beliefs that provided social direction and purpose. In A History of the Polish Americans, John J. Bukowczyk provides a thorough account of the Polish experience in America and how some cultural bonds loosened, as well as the ways in which others persisted.

Book excerpt: Labor Divided is the first anthology on race, ethnicity and the history of American working-class struggles to give substantial attention to the experiences of African-American, Asian, and Hispanic workers as well as to the experiences of workers from European backgrounds. The essays in Labor Divided cover a time period of more than a century. They focus on the experiences of service workers as well as factory workers, women as well as men. Because the American labor force presently is absorbing significant numbers of workers from abroad, and especially Asian and Hispanic workers, this volume will be of great interest to readers seeking historical perspectives on contemporary economic developments.

Book excerpt: What are you supposed to do when your two-year-old bares his butt and pees in the street in full view of the congregation exiting church on a Sunday morning---and you're the pastor's wife? Told with unabashed honesty and an Erma Bombeck style of humor, the Confessions of a Misfit Pastor's Wife takes the reader behind the closed doors of the parsonage and into the private and sometimes not so private thoughts of the Lady of the Manse. Isolated, lonely, and kicking against the goads, the young pastor's wife tries to fulfill all the expectations placed on her with some success, some failures, and some major faux pas. Add the 1950s TV June Cleaver role model for women and the dilemma becomes apparent. This is a must read for anyone interested in the role of women in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Be prepared to laugh and cry with the Misfit Pastor's Wife.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joel McGraw is a pastor at heart with a yen for writing. He writes from more than theory, but as a living "practitioner." He was born the youngest of 13 children on a farm in Conecuh County, Alabama, during the Great Depression. He did not wait until college for Cooperative Education. He began "co-oping" in pre-school and continued through grade school, college, and grad school where he earned his Master of Ministry Degree. Pastor Joel's writing is punctuated with gutsy life-workables. He believes a "disappointing" detour in his academic education early in his ministry proved to be a valuable God-send. During that "interruption" he worked gathering, writing, and reporting news and feature stories to help "support my preaching habit." He did corresponding for Associated Press and United Press International, and a couple of dailies, Mobile Press-Register and Montgomery Advertiser. His employers at the local radio station and newspaper in Evergreen, Alabama, were his competent instructors. This writer sees the "body of Christ" as multi-national, multi-denominational, and multi-racial. He is founding pastor of Faith Chapel, an International Pentecostal Holiness Church, in Huntsville, Alabama, where he has pastored and "pastured" for more than 40 years. He has been involved in and led in worship and people-care across many denominations, has assisted in hospital chaplaincy, led in city wide prayer gatherings, and served in leadership in various ministerial groups. For more than 20 years McGraw was a daily radio voice sharing God's Word, practical life helps, and interviews with other pastors and life-care professionals. He and his wife, Janelle Barbee McGraw, have three children - Steven McGraw, David McGraw, and LaNita McGraw Eby - who with their families are all committed Christians. [email protected]

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents 145 primary source documents of Polish immigrants from different waves and backgrounds speaking about their lives, concerns, and viewpoints in their own voices, while they grapple with issues of identity and strive to make sense of their lives in the context of migration. Poles have come to America since the Jamestown settlement in 1608 and constituted one of the largest immigrant groups at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. As of 2020, the Census Bureau lists them as the sixth largest ethnic group in the country. The history of their experience is an integral part of the American story as well as that of the broader Polish diaspora. Each of the ten comprehensive chapters presents a specific theme illuminated by a selection of letters, press articles, fragments of memoirs and autobiographical fiction, interviews, organizational papers, and other publications, as well as visual sources such as cartoons, posters, and photographs. Brief introductions to the documents and a "Further Reading" section offer historical context and point readers to additional resources. The book provides students and scholars with a broad understanding and an incentive for future study of the Polish experience in the United States.
