Download or read book Turbulent Mixing of Passive Scalars at High Schmidt Number written by Shuyi Xu and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A numerical study of fundamental aspects of turbulent mixing has been performed, with emphasis on the behavior of passive scalars of low molecular diffusivity (high Schmidt number Sc). Direct Numerical Simulation is used to simulate incompressible, stationary and isotropic turbulence carried out at high grid resolution. Data analyses are carried out by separate parallel codes using up to 10243 grid points for Taylor-scale Reynolds number (R(lambda) up to 390 and Sc up to 1024. Schmidt number of order 1000 is simulated using a double-precision parallel code in a turbulent flow at a low Reynolds number of R (lambda) 8 to reduce computational cost to achievable level. The results on the scalar spectrum at high Schmidt numbers appear to have a ...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in its fully updated fourth edition, this leading text in its field is an exhaustive monograph on turbulence in fluids in its theoretical and applied aspects. The authors examine a number of advanced developments using mathematical spectral methods, direct-numerical simulations, and large-eddy simulations. The book remains a hugely important contribution to the literature on a topic of great importance for engineering and environmental applications, and presents a very detailed presentation of the field.
Book Synopsis Numerical Experiments on Turbulent Mixing by : Stephen B. Pope
Download or read book Numerical Experiments on Turbulent Mixing written by Stephen B. Pope and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mixing in simple turbulent flows has been investigating using 64 cubed and 128 cubed Direct Numerical Simulations. In turbulent combustion, mixing by molecular transport is an essential process that is not well understood. Because mixing occurs on the smallest length and time scales it is difficult to study experimentally. Instead, we have employed direct numerical simulation of turbulence, initially for a conserved passive scalar in homogeneous isotropic turbulence. The Eulerian velocity and scalar fields are calculated from the exact evolution equations, and both Eulerian and Lagrangian statistics are deduced from the computed fields. A particle-tracking scheme, needed to extract Lagrangian information, has been implemented. The testing of a number of such particle tracking schemes has been completed with good results: accurate Lagrangian information can be extracted at a modest computational cost. In order to study processes in stationary turbulence, a forcing algorithm has been implemented. Tests on this scheme are complete, again with good results: the small scales are unaffected by the details of the forcing. Studies have been performed of: the mixing of a passive scalar; Lagrangian velocity, Acceleration and dissipation statistics; and Mixing and combustion problems viewed in terms of surfaces.
Book Synopsis Variable Density Fluid Turbulence by : P. Chassaing
Download or read book Variable Density Fluid Turbulence written by P. Chassaing and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first part aims at providing the physical and theoretical framework of the analysis of density variations in fully turbulent flows. Its scope is deliberately educational. In the second part, basic data on dynamical and scalar properties of variable density turbulent flows are presented and discussed, based on experimental data and/or results from direct numerical simulations. This part is rather concerned with a research audience. The last part is more directly devoted to an engineering audience and deals with prediction methods for turbulent flows of variable density fluid. Both first and second order, single point modeling are discussed, with special emphasis on the capability to include specific variable density / compressibility effects.

Book Synopsis Direct Numerical Simulation of Passive Scalar in Decaying Compressible Turbulence by :
Download or read book Direct Numerical Simulation of Passive Scalar in Decaying Compressible Turbulence written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The passive scalars in the decaying compressible turbulence with the initial Reynolds number (defined by Taylor scale and RMS velocity) Re=72, the initial turbulent Mach numbers (defined by RMS velocity and mean sound speed)[2,3] Mt=0.2-0.9, and the Schmidt numbers of passive scalar Sc=2-10 are numerically simulated by using a 7th order upwind difference scheme and 8th order group velocity control scheme. The computed results are validated with different numerical methods and different mesh sizes. The Batchelor scaling with k(exp -1) range is found in scalar spectra. The passive scalar spectra decay faster with increasing the turbulent Mach number. The sheet-like structures of the passive scalar gradient are also founded. The extended self-similarity (ESS) is found in the passive scalar of compressible turbulence.
