Download or read book Passioni Diverse written by Marco Poggi and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-09-21 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Before Emotion: The Language of Feeling, 400-1800 by : Juanita Ruys
Download or read book Before Emotion: The Language of Feeling, 400-1800 written by Juanita Ruys and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-02-07 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before Emotion: The Language of Feeling, 400-1800 advances current interdisciplinary research in the history of emotions through in-depth studies of the European language of emotion from late antiquity to the modern period. Focusing specifically on the premodern cognates of ‘affect’ or ‘affection’ (such as affectus, affectio, affeccioun, etc.), an international team of scholars explores the cultural and intellectual contexts in which emotion was discussed before the term ‘emotion’ itself came into widespread use. By tracing the history of key terms and concepts associated with what we identify as ‘emotions’ today, the volume offers a first-time critical foundation for understanding pre- and early modern emotions discourse, charts continuities and changes across cultures, time periods, genres, and languages, and helps contextualize modern shifts in the understanding of emotions.

Book Synopsis Divining the Oracle by : Massimo Ossi
Download or read book Divining the Oracle written by Massimo Ossi and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2003-07-15 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Claudio Monteverdi's historical position in music has been compared to that of Shakespeare in literature: almost exact contemporaries, each worked from traditional beginnings to transform nearly every genre he attempted. In this book, Massimo Ossi delves into the most significant aspect of Monteverdi's career: the development, during the first years of the seventeenth century, of a new compositional style he called the seconda prattica or "second manner." Challenged in print for the unconventional aspects of his music, Monteverdi found himself at the center of a debate between defenders of Renaissance principles and the newest musical currents of the time. The principles of the seconda prattica, Ossi argues in this sophisticated analysis of Monteverdi's writings, music, and approaches to text-setting, were in fact much more significant to the course of Monteverdi's career than previously thought by modern scholars-not only did Monteverdi continue to pursue their aesthetic and theoretical implications for the rest of his life, but they also affected his dramatic compositions as well as his chamber vocal music and sacred works. Ossi "divines the oracle" of Monteverdi's ambiguous theoretical concepts in a clear way and in terms of pure music; his book will enhance our understanding of Monteverdi as one of the most significant figures in western music history.
Book Synopsis Gregory of Nyssa: In Canticum Canticorum by : Giulio Maspero
Download or read book Gregory of Nyssa: In Canticum Canticorum written by Giulio Maspero and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-08-07 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taken together, Gregory of Nyssa’s XV Homilies In Canticum Canticorum are at the same time – as if in unison – a work of spiritual, exegetical, and theological doctrine. The wide spectrum of the themes present in them have prompted a great interest in this work, not only among scholars of patristics or theology, but also among those interested in biblical interpretation, ancient rhetoric or Christian mystical doctrine. These Proceedings present the results of the 13th International Colloquium on Gregory of Nyssa (Rome, 17-20 September 2014): a systematic commentary of Gregory’s In Canticum from a broad perspective in the form of sixteen papers and a selection of fourteen short essays devoted to various issues that represent a valuable set of supporting studies.
Book Synopsis From ‘Passio Perpetuae’ to ‘Acta Perpetuae’ by : Petr Kitzler
Download or read book From ‘Passio Perpetuae’ to ‘Acta Perpetuae’ written by Petr Kitzler and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-04-24 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While concentrated on the famous Passio Perpetuae et Felicitatis, this book focuses on an area that has so far been somewhat marginalized or even overlooked by modern interpreters: the recontextualizing of the Passio Perpetuae in the subsequent reception of this text in the literature of the early Church. Since its composition in the early decades of the 3rd century, the Passio Perpetuae was enjoying an extraordinary authority and popularity. However, it contained a number of revolutionary and innovative features that were in conflict with existing social and theological conventions. This book analyses all relevant texts from the 3rd to 5th centuries in which Perpetua and her comrades are mentioned, and demonstrates the ways in which these texts strive to normalize the innovative aspects of the Passio Perpetuae. These efforts, visible as they are already on careful examination of the passages of the editor of the passio, continue from Tertullian to Augustine and his followers. The normalization of the narrative reaches its peak in the so-called Acta Perpetuae which represent a radical rewriting of the original and an attempt to replace it by a purified text, more compliant with the changed socio-theological hierarchies.
