Book excerpt: Excerpt from Passages From the Philosophy of Herbert Spencer Perhaps to the average reader these lines from T be Foundations of Belief, by Arthur James Bal four, would seem to characterize the doctrine of Herbert Spencer. But the real student of his Philosophy Would resent the injustice of such an in terpretation. As though from a glance at a figure upon the border of an intricate piece Of tapestry, one could conceive the design and colour scheme of the whole. Herbert Spencer could not avoid the conviction that there exists no rational foundation for the be lief in the continuance of conscious personality after death. He believed that the human intellect in its present state of development, could offer no solution to the great problem of identity. He neither af firmed nor denied but with unremitting labour and his life's devotion he produced a Philosophy which gave an inestimable impulse to modern thought if not to Science. In his Syntlzetic Pbilosopliy he revealed the mysterious unity of all existence he traced the progress of Evolution in life, mind, society and morality. I have tried in it to give a simple outline of the cardinal ideas and more important bearings of the Synthetic Philosophy. The accomplishment of this task within the limits allowed me has made more than sufficient demands upon my powers of presentment and condensation. Absence of recorded disapproval must, therefore, not be regarded as necessarily implying assent. Where I have departed from interpretation to express judgment, I have done so simply for the purpose of indicating certain points at which, in respect of fundamental matters, Spencer's account of things seems to me to be most seriously open to criticism. Book excerpt: "The character of this work, so far as it consists of extracts from the writings of others, will be seen from the following letter from one who is well known in the literary world, and who himself maintained a discussion with Mr. Spencer, carried on on both sides with great brilliancy and power: "Dear Sir: I beg to thank you for your courtesy in forwarding to me the series of papers in the Boston Investigator, which I should have acknowledged much sooner but for the fact that it was sent to the publishers whilst I was away from home and about the country. The extracts you have so carefully prepared seem to me to have been made with great accuracy and intelligence, and I think they should be satisfactory to Mr. Spencer, as they are to myself". Interspersed with and following the extracts here referred to, the author has made criticisms of his own, which, it is hoped, will at least be found worthy of thoughtful consideration"--Preface. They have been ex tended somewhat, and, for the sake of greater unity than essays which were at first inde pendent of each other could have, their form has also been altered. I have quoted copi ously from Mr. Spencer for two reasons First, no candid writer, whose purpose is as controversial as mine, will trust himself to represent his opponent's doctrine without the check, both of exact quotation and exact reference; and, secondly, because so contra dictory and absurd are some of Mr. Spencer's positions, that my unsupported statements about them would not be believed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This early work by Herbert Spencer was originally published in 1910 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'Passages from the Philosophy of Herbert Spencer' is a collection of fascinating snippets of Spencer's writings on various philosophical concepts. Herbert Spencer was born on 27th April 1820, in Derby, England. In 1851 he published 'Social Statics' to great acclaim and his quietly influential 'Principles of Psychology' in 1955. These were followed by numerous works of sociology, psychology, and philosophy, which led him to become a prominent intellectual of his day. He also wrote 'The Developmental Hypothesis' (1852) which described the theory of evolution seven years before Charles Darwin's 'Origin of Species'. He even popularised the term "Evolution" and coined the phrase "Survival of the fittest," but his works did not contain the comprehensive theoretical system that Darwin's did, which is why his theory was not taken seriously at the time. Spencer's most famous idea was that of "Social Darwinism." He saw the process of organic evolution as being analogous to that of society, an idea influenced many intellectuals of the day.

Nothing can take the place of Mr. Spencer's own writings, but \mastery of these demands an amount of leisure and philosophic enthusiasm which are by no means widespread. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Examination of the Structural Principles of Mr. Herbert Spencer's Philosophy The endeavour has been made to strip the argu ment, as far as possible, of all technical terms, -to remember that the highest merit of style is sim plicity, - and to write the whole work in such a fashion that to understand it in every part, and decide as to the validity of the reasoning, Shall demand of no one nothing more than enlarged common sense. If a few philosophical terms have been necessarily employed they will, I think, be found to be hardly more than elementary con ceptions, and such as can be mastered without much difficulty by any one of good intelligence. First of all, I wish to express my gratitude that the little book has been considered worthy of being presented to the English speaking world in their own tongue. I should like to add, furthermore, that I am greatly indebted to English and American thinkers for inspiration and suggestion which I regard of the highest value. Herbert Spencer taught me to think genetically and from William James, whose recent untimely death fills us all with profound sorrow, I got the idea of making psychological analysis the basis of my philosophical investigations. And in the new pragmatic method, which likewise originated in America, I have found a theory to which I had been led independently by my own investigations even before hearing of its American exponents. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Letters of Herbert Spencer A word or two seems necessary by way of explanation of the publication of a biography of Mr. Herbert Spencer, within a few years of the publication of his voluminous Autobiography. Twenty-eight years ago, while I was at home on furlough, Mr. Spencer obtained from me a promise to w1ite his Life. In subsequent years, partly owing to his fears that his own life might not be prolonged, and partly because he thought that my absence in India would render it difficult, if not impossible, for me to fulfil my promise, he made other arrangements. These other arrangements, however, fell through. Hence the question, in a letter to me, dated IO May, 1893 Does the assent which you gave years ago still hold, and is it likely to hold? On receiving an affirmative answer, Mr. Spencer had the following para graph inserted in his Will I request that the said David Duncan will write a Biography in one volume of moderate size, in which shall be incorporated such biographical materials as I have thought it best not to use myself, together with such selected correspondence and such un published papers as may seem of value, and shall include the frontispiece portrait and the profile portraits, and shall add to it a brief account of the part of my life which has passed Since the date at which the Autobiography concludes.
