This book was released on 2011-07-12 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baron von Müffling was an eye-witness to some of the most decisive events of the Napoleonic Wars, born into a noble family he went into the Prussian service, and saw action in the early campaigns of the Revolutionary wars in Holland and Belgium, during which he said he learned very little. He was party to the birth of the famed Prussian General staff and comments of the different personalities such as Scharnhorst, Gneisenau and to a lesser extent Massenbach. On a less happy note he was also a member of the Prussian army that was destroyed by Napoleon in 1806, and notes with some regret of the bumbling planning, ancient commanders and ineffective tactics used. After spending some time kicking his heels away from Prussia, where he might be a liability due to his anti-French views, the collapse of the Grande Armée in 1812 offers a chance for further service and liberation of his country. Attached to the army of Silesia and Blücher for the campaigns of 1813 and 1814, during which he and his countrymen fight their way across Europe into the heart of France. He comments on the battles of Lützen, Bautzen, and the battle of Nations at Leipzig, the strained relationships within the allied headquarters and the deeds of hard fighting and long marches that the Russian and Prussian soldiers make under Blücher. His comments on the 1814 campaign in France are particularly interesting as he was at the heart of the action, and at the side of the conductors of the campaign from the Allied side. He is quick to take issue with erroneous statements made at the time, and by later commentators as to the decisions made and the actions taken. Müffling was allowed little respite after the peace of 1814, plunging back into the fray in 1815 as the Prussian liaison officer at the Duke of Wellington’s headquarters. Vivid details and important facts are recounted with extreme modesty, and unlike staff-officers of later years his place on the battlefield at the Duke’s side was one of grave danger as the Anglo-Dutch army struggled to hold on to the ridge at Waterloo. His own action was indeed decisive, in two incidents, the first in directing the Prussian reinforcements to the right of the hard-pressed allied line, and secondly in bringing up two British cavalry brigades to take part in the final assault on the French lines. He was appointed the Governor of Paris, a particularly tricky job given the recent struggles and the large numbers of armed men roaming the city, which he dispatched with aplomb. Müffling would go on to many important postings in the Prussian army, and even as an international mediator. An excellent read, full of details of how the Napoleonic Wars was fought and the personalities that bought down the Napoleonic colossus. Author – General Baron Friedrich Karl Ferdinand von Müffling - (1775-1851) Editor – Colonel Philip Yorke (1799-1874)

Book excerpt: This book tells the story of the invasion of France at the twilight of Napoleon's empire. With more than a million men under arms throughout central Europe, Coalition forces poured over the Rhine River to invade France between late November 1813 and early January 1814. Three principal army groups drove across the great German landmark, smashing the exhausted French forces that attempted to defend the eastern frontier. In less than a month, French forces ingloriously retreated from the Rhine to the Marne; Allied forces were within one week of reaching Paris. This book provides the first complete English-language study of the invasion of France along a front that extended from Holland to Switzerland.

Book excerpt: A glorious and conclusive chronicle of the wars waged by one of the most polarizing figures in military history Acclaimed on both sides of the Atlantic as a new standard on the subject, this sweeping, boldly written history of the Napoleonic era reveals its central protagonist as a man driven by an insatiable desire for fame, and determined to push matters to extremes. More than a myth-busting portrait of Napoleon, however, it offers a panoramic view of the armed conflicts that spread so quickly out of revolutionary France to countries as remote as Sweden and Egypt. As it expertly moves through conflicts from Russia to Spain, Napoleon's Wars proves to be history writing equal to its subject—grand and ambitious—that will reframe the way this tumultuous era is understood.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most colorful characters in the Napoleonic pantheon, Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher (1742–1819) is best known as the Prussian general who, along with the Duke of Wellington, defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo. Throughout his long career, Blücher distinguished himself as a bold commander, but his actions at times appeared erratic and reckless. This magnificent biography by Michael V. Leggiere, an award-winning historian of the Napoleonic Wars, is the first scholarly book in English to explore Blücher’s life and military career—and his impact on Napoleon. Drawing on exhaustive research in European archives, Leggiere eschews the melodrama of earlier biographies and offers instead a richly nuanced portrait of a talented leader who, contrary to popular perception, had a strong grasp of military strategy. Nicknamed “Marshal Forward” by his soldiers, he in fact retreated more often than he attacked. Focusing on the campaigns of 1813, 1814, and 1815, Leggiere evaluates the full effects of Blücher’s operations on his archenemy. In addition to providing military analysis, Leggiere draws extensively from Blücher’s own writings to reveal the man behind the legend. Though tough as nails on the outside, Blücher was a loving family man who deplored the casualties of war. This meticulously written biography, enhanced by detailed maps and other illustrations, fills a large gap in our understanding of a complex man who, for all his flaws and eccentricities, is justly credited with releasing Europe from the yoke of Napoleon’s tyranny.
