Book excerpt: Where is this thing called love? And how do you get there from here? For many it's an elusive goal that's over even before it has a chance to start -- but it doesn't have to be. In A FINE ROMANCE, nationally recognized psychologist Dr. Judith Sills shows how the whole agonizing and exhilarating process of love actually develops between two people -- and how the rules of successful courtship can be learned and mastered. Dr. Sills covers all the skills you need to develop the right relationship in the areas of intimacy, compromise, and commitment. She also takes you step-by-step through the five stages of a relationship: * SELECTION -- when you actively or passively choose a partner. * SEDUCTION -- the dating days when you and your partner decide if the relationship is romantic, platonic, or dead. * SWITCH -- that uncomfortable period when the pursuer backs off just as the partner responds. * NEGOTIATION -- when you both acknowledge your differences and try to find a decent way to fight about them. * COMMITMENT -- the negotiation to marriage. There is no one right person. There is only your ability to give and receive love. This book will help lovers learn how to do just that.

Book excerpt: When you were born you had the capacity to enter into an intimate relationship with God the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. There is a passage way to this relationship. It is called intimacy. “I am able to do nothing from Myself [independently, of My own accord—but only as I am taught by God and as I get His orders]. Even as I hear, I judge [I decide as I am bidden to decide. As the voice comes to Me, so I give a decision], and My judgment is right (just, righteous), because I do not seek or consult My own will [I have no desire to do what is pleasing to Myself, My own aim, My own purpose] but only the will and pleasure of the Father Who sent Me.” John 5:30 Amplified

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acclaimed evangelical speaker and writer Tony Campolo teams up with spiritual director and teacher Mary Albert Darling to reveal some gems from the liturgical Christian tradition to Protestants who may be ready for a refreshing change. While steeped in their own evangelical tradition, the authors are not afraid to venture back into Christian history and reclaim practices that have long been considered exclusively Catholic--including Centering Prayer, along with works by Ignatius Loyola and Catherine of Siena--as excellent spiritual tools to help evangelicals grow in faith and love for the poor. A vital theme in Campolo and Darling's work is that spirituality is not solely an individualistic practice but must lead Christians to love and help the oppressed. True Christian mysticism, they posit, is not an either/or proposition. That's because the nexus between evangelism and justice is to be found in Christian mysticism.

This book was released on 2018-09-10 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The German lied, or art song, is considered one of the most intimate of all musical genres—often focused on the poetic speaker’s inner world and best suited for private and semi-private performance in the home or salon. Yet, problematically, any sense of inwardness in lieder depends on outward expression through performance. With this paradox at its heart, Intimacy, Performance, and the Lied in the Early Nineteenth Century explores the relationships between early nineteenth-century theories of the inward self, the performance practices surrounding inward lyric poetry and song, and the larger conventions determining the place of intimate poetry and song in the public concert hall. Jennifer Ronyak studies the cultural practices surrounding lieder performances in northern and central Germany in the first quarter of the nineteenth century, demonstrating how presentations of lieder during the formative years of the genre put pressure on their sense of interiority. She examines how musicians responded to public concern that outward expression would leave the interiority of the poet, the song, or the performer unguarded and susceptible to danger. Through this rich performative paradox Ronyak reveals how a song maintains its powerful intimacy even during its inherently public performance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is customary for pastors to urge their congregations to spend time with God in prayer. They know that this is of paramount importance, the one thing needful. But instructions given by pastors usually have to do with prayer for others or prayer for oneself. Rarely does one hear instruction on how, specifically, one can nurture and deepen one’s relationship with Jesus. This is the challenge that Alex Aronis has taken up in his book, Developing Intimacy with God Anchored on the spiritual classic The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, Alex has made the necessary adjustments to this sixteenth century text to maximize its contribution for modern readers. Thus, the book serves as a personal spiritual guide. It can be used for individual or group use and coaches the prayer over an eight-week period through a series of interactive prayer exercises. Aronis writes, "For disciples of Jesus, nothing in this world is of greater importance than experiencing intimate communion with Christ. It is our greatest privilege to know Jesus personally, and to let God love us as we commune with him on a daily basis. Developing Intimacy with God will teach you how to do that."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Phenomenology of Sex, Love, and Intimacy presents a phenomenological exploration of love as it manifests itself through sexual desires and intimate relationships. Setting up a unique dialogue between psychology and philosophy, Susi Ferrarello offers a perspective through which clinicians can inform their practice on diverse issues of human sexuality. Drawing on Husserl’s phenomenology, Ferrarello’s analysis of love spans a range of disciplines including psychology, theology, biology, epistemology, and axiology, as well as areas related to gender, consent, and political control. Combining Husserlian perspectives on ethics with a focus on lived-experience, this text will deepen therapists’ understanding of love as the subject of interdisciplinary inquiry and enable them to locate questions of sexuality and intimacy within an academic framework. With key theoretical principles included to allow clinicians to think through and clarify their practice, this book will be a valuable tool for sex therapists, marriage and family therapists, and counselors, as well as psychology and philosophy students alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do migrant women living in illegality build intimate relationships? How do they experience, resist or take advantage of the tight link between intimacy and migration status created by the German migration legislation? Drawing on rich biographical accounts and ethnographic methods, the book offers an insightful and sensitive look at a mostly unknown aspect of life in illegality. Adopting a critical feminist perspective, Flaminia Bartolini shows how intimacy should be understood in its intrinsic power dimension and looks critically at the German migration regime and on its effects on migrants' lives.
