This meeting was dedicated to celebrate the 60th birthdays of Augusto Garcia and Arnulfo Zepeda, pioneers of this field in Latin America. The scientific program of the X MSPF included 70 review lectures on the most recent advances in high energy physics: experiment, theory, and phenomenology. Leading lecturers from more than ten countries presented their material at plenary sessions. Contributed papers were presented in a poster session. The topics covered during the X MSPF are the following: Precision tests of the standard model, QCD, neutrino physics, SUSY, experimental high energy physics, new physics and effective theories, quantum field theory, strings, quantum gravity, and cosmology.

These experiments will use very intense conventional neutrino beams and novel beams derived from muons or radioactive nuclei. These new facilities will provide a broad research front including muon physics and neutrino scattering experiments. The main technical challenges involve construction of very intense proton beams, targeting, effective capture of produced particles, cooling and subsequent acceleration of the resulting muons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Standard Model of the electromagnetic and weak interactions offers no explanations for the origin of the fermion mass and mixing parameters, except that they arise from Yukawa couplings, which are free parameters of the Model. The problem is worse when the question of neutrino masses is considered and, despite its remarkable success on many fronts, the Standard Model cannot explain some important experimental observations. In particular, it is not possible to describe the phenomena of neutrino oscillations that has been uncovered in recent years and, from a particle physics viewpoint, this provides the most convincing evidence for physics beyond the Standard Model. Following the trend of the previous workshops, we focus also on the presentation of the current status of the main accelerator and non-accelerator neutrino mass experiments (such as Super-Kamiokande, and SNO), the future experimental projects (e.g., MiniBoone) and some of the phenomenology related to them, as well as reviews of the theoretical and phenomenological ideas related to the question of neutrino masses and related topics such as the explanation for the observed baryon asymmetry in the universe.

This book was released on 2002-10-10 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent evolution of ultra-intense lasers makes it possible to open new frontiers of science on superstrong field interactions which cover explorations in a broad area ranging from atom and molecular science to nuclear and high energy particle physics; even further to astrophysics and cosmology. The symposium shed a bright light on this fast evolving field and foresaw a revolutionary paradigm shift in a quest for the origin of matter and universe. The topics covered in the proceedings are: applications of ultra-intense ultra-short pulse lasers; atoms, molecules and clusters in strong laser fields; high field chemistry; high harmonic generation, x-ray generation by laser-matter interactions and their applications; relativistic particle generation and acceleration by superstrong laser-plasma interactions; laser-induced nuclear and high energy particle physics; high energy astrophysics and cosmology, gamma-ray burst, cosmic ray acceleration; laboratory astrophysics; and quantum electrodynamics in superstrong fields.

Book excerpt: We read in order to know we are not alone, I once heard, and perhaps it could also be suggested that we write in order not to be alone, to endorse, to promote continuity. The idea for this book took about 10 years to materialize, and it is the author’s hope that its content will constitute the beginning of further explorations beyond current horizons. More speci cally, this book appeals to the reader to engage upon and persevere with a journey, moving through the less well explored territories in the evolution of the very early universe, and pushing towards new landscapes. P- haps, during or after consulting this book, this attitude and this willingness will be embraced by someone, somewhere, and this person will go on to enrich our quantum cosmological description of the early universe, by means of a clearer supersymm- ric perspective. It is to these creative and inquisitive ‘young minds’ that the book is addressed. The reader will not therefore nd in this book all the answers to all the problems regarding a supersymmetric and quantum description of the early universe, and this remark is substantiated in the book by a list of unresolved and challenging problems, itself incomplete.

Book excerpt: The generalization of QCD from three to C colors, developed in 1974 by Nobel laureate Gerard 't Hooft, has proved to be an extraordinarily useful and robust theoretical extension for studying the behavior of strong interaction physics. This book is the proceedings of the first-ever meeting exclusively devoted to large NC QCD. The workshop brought together representatives of many subdisciplines for a meeting of minds on topics ranging from finite temperature and density to the lattice, perturbative QCD, instantons, mesons, baryons, and nuclear physics. Beginning with 't Hooft's keynote presentation, the contributions are designed to introduce uses of large NC methods in each specialty to a broader particle physics audience."
