Book excerpt: Parrot Island: The Pirate Adventures is a children's/YA book that has a slightly different take than any other pirate book. Our story began with a simple question: Where do pirates actually get their parrots? Well, after digging through the secret archives of the Caribbean pirates, we found a clue. There is a small island shrouded in mystery that is home to parrots trained to be proper pirates' parrots. It's a very cinematic story that follows the adventures of Gabe, the son of Blackbeard's parrot who is chosen by the notorious pirate Sykes to join the crew of the Rusty Cutlass. Joined by his best friend Ponce, a portly grey parrot, the two parrots meet Bilge, a ship-smart rat who helps them during their adventures on the high seas. We feel this a genre-bending book in the plethora of Pirate Books for children. None that we could find is told from the parrot's perspective in such a fun and adventure filled way and includes two strong female characters- a woman pirate named Pearl and her parrot Fabiola. It's not about plunder and treasure, but understanding how to work together as a team and overcome big obstacles.

Book excerpt: South America's often overlooked English-speaking country lies far off the well-trodden tourist path. Guyana is the ideal destination for the discerning visitor seeking adventure. Within its vast interior, the Guiana Shield (one of the four pristine tropical rainforests left in the world) converges with the Amazon Basin, creating a unique geography composed of coastal waters, mangroves, marshes, savannas, mountains and tropical rainforests.Bordered by Venezuela, Brazil, Suriname and the Atlantic Ocean, the lively locals - a melting pot of East Indian and African descendants, peppered with Chinese, Europeans and Amerindians - create a culture decidedly more Caribbean than Latin.

Download or read book Daoist Identity written by Livia Kohn and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2002-02-28 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daoist Identity is an exploration of the various means by which Daoists over the centuries have created an identity for themselves. Using modern sociological studies of identity formation as its foundation, it brings together a representative sample of in-depth analyses by eminent American and Japanese scholars in the field. The discussion begins with critical examinations of the ways identity was found among the early movements of the Way of Great Peace and the Celestial Masters. The role of sacred texts and literary culture in Daoist identity formation is discussed. The volume then focuses on lineage formation and the increasing role of popular religious practices, such as spirit-writing, in modern Daoism since the Song dynasty. Finally it discusses the Daoist adaptation and reinterpretation of Buddhist rites, such as the feeding of souls in hell and the use of ritual gestures, and the changes made in contemporary Daoism in relation to traditional rites and popular practices. Contributors: Asano Haruji, Suzanne Cahill, M. Csikszentmihalyi, Edward L. Davis, Terry F. Kleeman, Livia Kohn, Mabuchi Masaya, Maruyama Hiroshi, Mitamura Keiko, Mori Yuria, Peter Nickerson, Charles D. Orzech, Harold D. Roth, Shiga Ichiko, Tsuchiya Masaaki.
